'For a moment, not knowing that supreme self, the one, the imperishable, you abandon it, O fool—how then do you desire liberation?'
'Vṛndā, your beloved queen, was taken away by yogic illusion; realizing the form of Brahman, she attained that supreme state.'
Now, that is difficult to obtain, and that supreme state is also hard to reach; between heaven and liberation, choose the better in this world of transmigration.
Jalandhara said: The state attained by gods and liberated beings is gained by one who has fulfilled his purpose; now I am fulfilled, for I see you, having been slain by you.
Shiva said: If you are eager to reach my supreme abode, then quickly provoke me by slaying the demon with firm arrows.
Then I will kill you, and you, sinless one, will go to my abode; hearing the words of Maheshvara, Jalandhara spoke to Shiva.
Since you are worshipped by the whole universe, I will not strike first.
Narada said: Thus addressed, Shiva swiftly struck the son of the ocean with arrows; those arrows, lodged in the body of the ocean's son, shone brightly.
Just as reeds set aflame at the edge of an iron mountain, so Jalandhara filled the limbs of Hara with arrows.
With those arrows Rudra shone, as the sky crowded with celestial beings; thus, O king, a duel arose between Jalandhara and Hara.
None but Hara can withstand the son of the ocean; then, with thousands of mountain peaks torn from the earth,
In battle, the son of the ocean filled the Lord of Parvati; then the demon was struck in the chest by Rudra's trident.
From his mouth emerged a fever, terrifying as Jambha; that fever, named Heroic Fever, had the face of a lion and the form of a man.
Seeing the lion-faced fever emerge from the demon's body, Sharabha uttered a dreadful roar and appeared there.
That fever, issued from Shiva, was struck down by Sharabha; seeing unconquerable Shankara, accompanied by the lord of bulls,
The son of the ocean swiftly approached the bull; seizing the bull by the tail, he whirled it in the sky.
Mighty-armed Jalandhara hurled it onto the Himalayan mountain; then the Lord of Girija released a most fierce trident.
Seizing it with his hand, the lord of demons, in Shiva's presence, mounted his chariot, took up his bow, and the ocean-born went to the field of death.
He filled Shiva, standing on the earth, with arrows; fierce, he cut down the weapons and arrows, and with his own arrows shattered the chariot.
Ten yojanas wide, with charioteer and horses, even when deprived of his chariot, Jalandhara rushed at Shiva in battle.
A fierce and wondrous battle arose between the two, hair-raising to behold; seeing it, the gods there suspected the end of the world had come unexpectedly.
With all weapons, those two of terrible might struck each other, shaking the earth with their feet and causing the heavens to tremble with their roars.
Then, seeing the formidable power of the lord of the demons, Śaṅkara swiftly removed the net of weapons by the force of his yogic illusion.
Then the demon, with countless arms, dreadful fangs, and terrifying eyes, though deprived of weapons, rushed swiftly at Hara.
With his massive hands he seized Śiva on the battlefield; then Śiva cut off that forest of hands with his sword.
Seized by the arms of Sindhu's son, Rudra became blue and red; playfully, he began to fight in battle with Sindhu's offspring.
Though his hand was severed, the river's son continued to fight, like Svarbhānu with his head; by wrestling, he pleased Śaṅkara.
Pleased, Śambhu said, 'Choose a boon, even one difficult to obtain.' Jālandhara replied, 'Grant me your own supreme state.'
'You should not scorn me because I am weaponless; quickly grant me success, or else I will destroy you,' said Jālandhara.
Saying this, he regained his arms and struck Hara on the chest with his fists; then, the Sudarśana discus, which had once been created by him, appeared.
