'Bereft of pleasure, anguished by separation, O beautiful-throated one, I have been abandoned by you. Even Vāsudeva has forsaken me, and, dearest, he does not know you.'
'At Dakṣa's sacrifice, O Goddess, you offered your head into the fire. Again you were regained—how can you leave me once more?'
'Arise, arise, O lovely-limbed one! O Girijā, awaken me!' Meanwhile, Śiva realized he had been deluded by the demon's magic.
Standing among the hosts of gods, he came down from the sky. Then, as he lamented, the unseen Lotus-Seated One spoke to him.
Brahmā said: 'You are untouched by grief, delusion, father, or mother; you have neither sorrow nor joy, nor child, wife, or enemy. You were not born of any father, nor will you be born; even the sages know this—how can you be deluded?'
'You are one, O Lord, yet you take on many forms, like the sun appearing in the waves of the ocean. Through meditation, the self-controlled reach your feet, your supreme form, which is difficult to comprehend and cannot be described.'
'This is not your true beloved who has perished; she is a magical illusion created by Jālandhara. O God, dispel this illusion. Pārvatī, O Śambhu, is within the lotus. Fight the hosts of enemies, destroy them, and protect us.'
Hearing these words of Brahmā, Maheśvara understood. Realizing it was a demon's illusion, he hurled a great rock.
With it, he struck down three hundred million demons in battle. Then, filled with great anger, he mounted his bull, O King.
Dhūrjaṭi took up his bow Pināka and arrows for battle. Then, seeing Śarva free from illusion, the son of the ocean gazed upon him.
O King, Jālandhara quickly created another wondrous, powerful magical web to bewilder the lord of the gods.
Jālandhara, with a billion arms, fought with trees, weapons, and missiles, standing atop the bull. Then, in an instant, the ocean's son made the earth adorned with mountains.
He made the land, O King, beautiful with temples of the gods, filled with various flowers, where enchanting apsarases like Menakā danced.
Forgetting himself, Śaṃbhu immediately set aside his bow and proceeded, standing atop the bull, greatly bewildered on earth by the demon king's magical dance, accompanied by music and song.
Seeing Hara, ever mounted on the bull, bewildered, the ocean, together with Tāṇḍava, with song, with music, and with the play of dance, roared in manifold forms, swiftly seeking to enchant him.
He cast thousands of beings into the ocean, and that became a great festival; but where were all those deities, and where were the hosts led by Nandi?
Even you, worthy of honor, have been deluded by the demon's illusion; O blessed Śambhu, why today do you neglect the discus and that which abides in your belly?
For his destruction alone, O Maheśa, Jālandhara does not withdraw; yet, by Kṛṣṇa's words, remembering himself as the Lord—
Swiftly mounting the bull, he entered the great battlefield; seeing Śiva arrive, surrounded by all his army—
In battle, O King, the enraged asura Jālandhara blocked him; from the wrath of Hara arose the power to create and destroy.
At the fire of the third eye, the forms of the demons were like moths; seeing the Lord's form, blazing with fierce flames, O King—
Then the demons Śumbha and others, and those like Rāhu, beholding Rudra, terrified, entered the netherworld out of fear.
Seeing countless soldiers slain in the great battle, and seeing the remnants of Śumbha and others destroyed, and themselves fleeing—
Then Jālandhara alone stood firm in battle like a mountain, joyfully beholding the supreme form of Rudra directly.
Then Jālandhara, laughing, spoke to Mahādeva: 'Withdraw that form by which you burn all that moves and does not move.'
'Fight with weapons, abandoning your own yogic power.' Hearing these words of Jālandhara, Śiva then spoke—
'Choose a boon, O lord of demons; I am pleased with your deed. Even seeing such a form of mine, you are now fearless.'
'Even the entire cosmic egg, O Dānava, is not able to withstand the sight of this form of mine; yet here you are, unafraid.'
Nārada said: 'Thus, understanding Śambhu's favor, Jālandhara, free from worldly desire, sought from Hara the highest liberation—union with him.'
Śrī Mahādeva said: 'This divine body of yours, O demon, is endowed with enjoyment and accomplishment; Vṛndā, charming and delightful, remains here and experiences her destined time.'
