She said, 'I will go with Pārvatī; I cannot live without her, O Hara.' Seizing the moon from Śambhu's matted hair, she swiftly descended from the bull.
That Māyā, absorbed in illusion, dismounted and went to battle; then, having heard that Gaurī had been taken, Śaṅkara began to ponder.
Embraced by the illusion of the demon, he did not recognize himself, O king; at that moment, one arrived, surrounded by a great army.
The son of the ocean placed Māyā Mṛḍānī on his chariot and went toward Śiva; in the battle for Jālandhara's defeat, there arose the sound of many instruments.
The earth trembled, and the mountains resounded in response; the son of the ocean showed Pārvatī to Hara.
Rudra, too, saw his beloved standing on the enemy's chariot—frail, distressed by separation, with anxious eyes.
She kept crying out again and again, 'Alas, lord, beloved Rudra!'—seeing her on the chariot of the proud enemy, like the Veda among heretics.
Thus, Sthāṇu meditated on Gaurī: 'How will my beloved be regained by me?' Then Śambhu, bewildered by the demon's illusion, lamented.
'Delusion has overtaken me by the demons, O beloved; how have you been taken, my dear?' Seeing Śaṅkara overwhelmed by grief and confusion, the son of the ocean—
—spoke these words, laughing, yet with a certain compassion: 'You are devoid of all discernment, remember, bereft of passion.'
'Even you, the lord, have become pitiable without Ambikā; do not weep, O Virūpākṣa, I will return your beloved to you.'
'You are protected by me, O Rudra; I have taken Pārvatī from the battle.' Saying this, he quickly lifted Umā from his chariot for Giriśa.
He sent his army toward Śaṅkara, indeed; and Hara, mounted on the bull, swiftly charged at that army.
Pārvatī, crying out, 'Protect me! Save me!' as she was about to be seized—just as Vṛṣabhadhvaja reached out his hand to take Gaurī—
At that moment, the demon Śumbha quickly seized her and, standing in the sky, hurled his trident with force to kill Śumbhāsura, but Hara—
Śumbha abandoned her, and she fell upon the trident; weeping, her beautiful body cast down, she was pierced by the trident.
She fell before Śaṅkara and, saying 'So be it,' died. Seeing Māyāgaurī dead, I was overwhelmed by grief and delusion.
Crying out, 'Alas, my beloved!' Rudra wept and collapsed to the ground, unconscious. Regaining his senses for a moment on the battlefield, the Lord of Umā cursed Śumbha and the others: 'Gaurī will slay you all.'
Nārada said: Then, O King, Śumbha and the other demons were struck down in battle by the Goddess, as a result of Maheśvara's curse, and departed.
Having cursed them, Śaṅkara wept, uttering words as he left: 'Where have you gone, my beloved?' Thus he addressed me, sorrowful, on the battlefield.
'Bereft of pleasure, anguished by separation, O beautiful-throated one, I have been abandoned by you. Even Vāsudeva has forsaken me, and, dearest, he does not know you.'
'At Dakṣa's sacrifice, O Goddess, you offered your head into the fire. Again you were regained—how can you leave me once more?'
'Arise, arise, O lovely-limbed one! O Girijā, awaken me!' Meanwhile, Śiva realized he had been deluded by the demon's magic.
Standing among the hosts of gods, he came down from the sky. Then, as he lamented, the unseen Lotus-Seated One spoke to him.
Brahmā said: 'You are untouched by grief, delusion, father, or mother; you have neither sorrow nor joy, nor child, wife, or enemy. You were not born of any father, nor will you be born; even the sages know this—how can you be deluded?'
'You are one, O Lord, yet you take on many forms, like the sun appearing in the waves of the ocean. Through meditation, the self-controlled reach your feet, your supreme form, which is difficult to comprehend and cannot be described.'
'This is not your true beloved who has perished; she is a magical illusion created by Jālandhara. O God, dispel this illusion. Pārvatī, O Śambhu, is within the lotus. Fight the hosts of enemies, destroy them, and protect us.'
Hearing these words of Brahmā, Maheśvara understood. Realizing it was a demon's illusion, he hurled a great rock.
With it, he struck down three hundred million demons in battle. Then, filled with great anger, he mounted his bull, O King.
Dhūrjaṭi took up his bow Pināka and arrows for battle. Then, seeing Śarva free from illusion, the son of the ocean gazed upon him.
