Seizing him by the hair, shaking him, naked, she embraced Bhārgava; laughing, that witch placed him in her womb, O delight of the victorious.
Seeing the guru cast into her vulva, as long as Jālandhara, the demon, watched, she remained visible as the witch, ready with arrows.
Śrī Nārada said: Then Jālandhara spoke, protecting himself, to Śiva: 'Now, O Śiva, I will swiftly hurl you to where Madhusūdana dwells.'
'Afterwards, dragging Brahmā, I will cast him into the ocean; when you all are subdued, then indeed I am the Lord of all.'
Having spoken thus, he entrusted his army to Śumbha, the demon, and others; with warriors like Niśumbha, he protected the fourfold host.
Śumbha, Niśumbha, Pheṃkāra, Pheruṃḍa, Dhūmralocana, Ketu, Biḍālajaṃgha, Rāhu, Durvāraṇa, and Yama—
Kālāsura, Lavaṇa, Bhūmiretas, Andhakāsura, Raktavīrya, Caṇḍī, Cāmuṇḍī, and the foremost of the Daityas—
Seeing all these mighty Daitya leaders arrayed for battle, O King, Vīrabhadra and the other hosts wailed in the fight.
Then there arose a fierce, tumultuous, hair-raising battle, where the Daityas, wounded and suffering, were the first to fall.
Then, by the Daityas led by Śumbha and others, with all weapons in the great conflict, some of the hosts were slain, others fled, O King.
Having conquered the hosts in battle, the Dānavas besieged Śiva, showering streams of arrows like clouds upon Mount Meru.
Then Bhairava, drawing the Pināka bow atop the bull, struck down the Dānavas in the battlefield with volleys of arrows, powerful, sharp-tipped, and in masses like razors.
Some fell by blows of the club at the center of the battle; Vṛṣabhadhvaja shattered Śumbha and the others with arrows.
He quickly destroyed the rest of the army with weapons and missiles on the battlefield; the field was covered with fallen elephants, men, and horses.
The earth became like mountains split by thunderbolts; then the son of the ocean created a magical form of Gaurī.
Endowed with beauty and virtues, adorned with all ornaments, he made the magical Jayā and spoke to her, O son of the ocean.
'Go before Rudra, swiftly bewilder him in battle.' Thus addressed by the lord of the Daityas, the magical Jayā went.
Going into battle, she stood before Śiva, her hair unbound, and wept; when questioned by Hari, she replied, 'From the Mānasottara mountain...'
O god, your beloved Pārvatī has been taken away by the son of the ocean—upon hearing these words, the bull-bannered one spoke to her.
Jaya, come here, mount the bull; the Dānavas will seize you—then, mounting the bull, Jaya embraced Śaṅkara.
She said, 'I will go with Pārvatī; I cannot live without her, O Hara.' Seizing the moon from Śambhu's matted hair, she swiftly descended from the bull.
That Māyā, absorbed in illusion, dismounted and went to battle; then, having heard that Gaurī had been taken, Śaṅkara began to ponder.
Embraced by the illusion of the demon, he did not recognize himself, O king; at that moment, one arrived, surrounded by a great army.
The son of the ocean placed Māyā Mṛḍānī on his chariot and went toward Śiva; in the battle for Jālandhara's defeat, there arose the sound of many instruments.
The earth trembled, and the mountains resounded in response; the son of the ocean showed Pārvatī to Hara.
Rudra, too, saw his beloved standing on the enemy's chariot—frail, distressed by separation, with anxious eyes.
She kept crying out again and again, 'Alas, lord, beloved Rudra!'—seeing her on the chariot of the proud enemy, like the Veda among heretics.
Thus, Sthāṇu meditated on Gaurī: 'How will my beloved be regained by me?' Then Śambhu, bewildered by the demon's illusion, lamented.
'Delusion has overtaken me by the demons, O beloved; how have you been taken, my dear?' Seeing Śaṅkara overwhelmed by grief and confusion, the son of the ocean—
—spoke these words, laughing, yet with a certain compassion: 'You are devoid of all discernment, remember, bereft of passion.'
