With an unimaginable blow of the mace, that fierce demon struck; then, with his fist, he knocked Caṇḍa to the ground.
Struck by Caṇḍīśa's weapon, Romakaṇṭha, the great demon, seized Caṇḍīśa by the feet and threw him onto the chariot's roof.
He suddenly fell to the ground, and the one with terrifying gaze approached him; in battle, Lambodara was slain by Ūrunetra's arrows.
Having killed him with his tusk in the chest, he cast him to the ground; Ūrunetra quickly regained composure and mounted his chariot at once.
He struck with a mace upon the head adorned with vermilion; the lord of the ganas pierced the demon in the chest with a spear.
Then, from his mouth emerged a great demon with nine heads, eighteen arms, O king, who rushed toward Shankara.
Vinayaka was blocked in battle by the nine-headed one and the wide-eyed one; though his body was battered, he seized his axe in anger.
With that, the lord of the ganas cut the weapons of those two kings; seeing Ganeshvara restrained by them in battle, Shanmukha—
The commander quickly arrived and slew the nine-headed one; after killing him in battle, he rushed toward the wide-eyed one.
Skanda, by the blow of his own spear, made him fall, O king; seeing this, Jalandhara advanced toward Skanda, surrounded by his army.
Out of affection for his son, Shankara, together with his retinue, also set out to destroy the demons; then a fiercer battle arose between the wondrous armies.
In the fight between Hara and Sindhuja, the earth and sky seemed lifeless; then, Jalandhara, enraged, fitted a dreadful arrow.
With an arrow adorned everywhere with hundreds of thousands of feathers, the lord of the demons struck Shiva on the forehead.
Its shaft sank into the boundary of Shiva’s forehead; on Shambhu’s brow, like the moon, it shone with great brilliance.
Just as the sun at the end of summer appears at dusk among clouds, so Rudra then seized a great arrow, blazing like fire.
Its speed was that of wind, its tip was fire and sun; in all its knots was time, and the goddess earth was established in the arrow.
With that arrow, Hara swiftly pierced Sindhuja in the heart; from that blow, he was drenched in a flood of blood.
He fell, his limbs pierced by the arrow, like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt; then the demons cried out, and so did the Pramathas.
Seeing Sindhuja unconscious, the demons surrounded Shiva; some rose to protect him, others stood around him.
While Jalandhara, son of the ocean, was still unconscious, Rudra slew the army of Jalandhara with arrows.
After a long time, Jalandhara recovered from his faint; seeing his army destroyed and scattered in battle, he was filled with fear.
Then he remembered Kavi, his supreme teacher, in his mind; being remembered, the sage quickly came to Jalandhara.
Having offered blessings, Bhārgava then spoke to the son of the ocean: 'What shall I do, O mighty king? What is your wish?'
Nārada said: Hearing these words of Kāvya, and honoring Bhārgava greatly, King Jālandhara bowed to his guru and spoke.
The king said: 'Shukra, revive all these dead Daityas everywhere.' Thus addressed by the son of the ocean, Shukra surveyed the army on the battlefield.
There, O king, the ground was covered, for a stretch of twenty-five thousand yojanas, with Daityas, chariots, and limbs, piled one upon another.
On that field, which extended for ninety-five yojanas, the earth was filled with the bodies of warriors, vehicles, and animals, like a funeral pyre.
Sprinkling them with water empowered by mantras, Kavi revived the Daityas, just as Rudra was binding his matted locks tightly with serpents.
At that very moment, by Kavi's mantra, the army was revived, O king—like tigers by a lion, elephants by a leader, or boars by their kind.
Seeing the Dānavas return, Śaṅkara pondered: 'What is this that has happened here? Who is reviving the dead?'
