शुंभस्तमागतं दृष्ट्वा रुरोध सह सैनिकैः । द्वंद्वयुद्धैरथाजग्मुर्गणा दैत्यैः परस्परम्
Seeing him arrive, Shumbha blocked him along with his soldiers; then the hosts and the asuras engaged each other in single combat.
शुंभः शिलादजं राहुर्महाकालं रणे ययौ । कोलाहलं निशुंभोऽथ केतुः कालमधावत
Shumbha fought Shiladaja, Rahu fought Mahakala in battle; then Nishumbha fought Kolahala, and Ketu rushed at Kala.
शैलोदरो गुहं जंभो माल्यवंतं महाबलः । महापार्श्वो ययौ चंडं चंडीशो रोमकंटकम्
Shailodara fought Guha, the mighty Jambha fought Malyavan; Mahaparsva fought Chanda, and Chandisha fought Romakantaka.
विकटास्योऽथ वै भृंगिमुरुनेत्रो विनायकम् । एवं दैत्येश्वरैः सार्द्धं गणानामधिपा ययुः
Then Vikatashya fought Bhringi, Murunetra fought Vinayaka; thus, the leaders of the hosts engaged the lords of the asuras.
अथ शुंभायुधैर्बाणैः प्रहतश्च शिलादजः । चूर्णीचकाराद्रिशृंगैः कपितुंडो महत्तरैः
Then Shiladaja, struck by Shumbha's weapons and arrows, shattered him with great mountain peaks, like the beak of a great bird.
शुंभस्तेनार्दितः शक्त्या शिलादं च जघान तम् । महाकालो जघानाथ तं राहुं रणमूर्द्धनि
Shumbha, wounded by him, struck Shilada with a spear and killed him; then Mahakala killed Rahu at the head of the battle.
शक्त्याथ तस्य हतवान्स्यंदनं स महाद्रिणा । कोलाहलो हतः शक्त्या निशुंभेन प्रतापवान्
Then, with his power, Kolāhala destroyed the chariot of Niśumbha, the mighty one; Kolāhala was struck down by Niśumbha's prowess.
शक्तिं गृहीत्वा ह्यहनद्रथं सारथिना सह । विरथेनाथ दैत्येन भृशं क्रुद्धेन संयुगे
Taking up a spear, he attacked the chariot along with its charioteer; the demon, now without a chariot and greatly enraged, fought fiercely in battle.
कोलाहलो सुरेंद्रेण सहस्रफणिना हतः । तं हत्वा चातिवेगेन रथं चान्यमुपागतः
Kolāhala was slain by Indra, the lord of the gods, with the thousand-headed serpent; after killing him with great speed, Indra approached another chariot.
फणिचक्रहतः संख्ये क्षणान्मूर्च्छां विहाय च । स्वरथात्शीघ्रमुत्तीर्य गृहीत्वा खड्गचर्मणी
Struck by the serpent-disc in battle, he quickly recovered from unconsciousness; leaping swiftly from his own chariot, he seized sword and shield.
सर्वं चक्रे निशुंभस्य स रथाद्यसिना पृथक् । पुनः स्वरथमारुह्य दैत्यं बाणैरताडयत्
With his sword, he separated everything belonging to Niśumbha from the chariot; then, mounting his own chariot again, he struck the demon with arrows.
निशुंभोऽप्यतिरोषाच्च तत्पराक्रमविस्मितः । शक्त्या महाबलस्तस्य रथं साश्वं न्यषूदयत्
Niśumbha, overwhelmed by intense anger and astonished at that display of valor, with his great strength, shattered his opponent's chariot and horses with a spear.
कोलाहलो रणे धावन्निशुंभं विरथो बली । गतः स सरथं चक्रे विरथं भुजबंधनात्
Kolāhala, powerful and now without a chariot, rushed at Niśumbha in battle; he reached the chariot, and made Niśumbha chariotless by binding his arms.
केतुपुच्छं गृहीत्वा च भ्रामयामास चांबरे । कालश्चिक्षेप सोऽप्यद्रिं स चिच्छेद गिरिं जवात्
Grabbing the banner's tail, he spun it in the sky; Kāla hurled a mountain, and he swiftly cut the mountain apart.
तं नगं चूर्णितं दृष्ट्वा ताडयामास मुष्टिना । कालश्चूर्णितसर्वांगः केतुना प्राद्रवद्भयात्
Seeing the mountain shattered, he struck Kāla with his fist; Kāla, his whole body crushed, fled in fear from the banner.
शैलोदरस्तथा स्कंदं जघान गदयोरसि । षडाननोऽपि तं शक्त्या हत्वा भूमावपातयत्
Śailodara struck Skanda's chest with his mace; the six-faced one killed him with a spear and cast him to the ground.
शक्तिप्रहारेण मृतं दानवं वीक्ष्य षण्मुखः । जगर्ज तत्र वैचित्र्यं यथा क्रौंचे विदारिते
Seeing the demon dead from the spear's blow, Ṣaṇmukha roared there in wonder, as when a crane is pierced.
माल्यवानथ बाणौघैर्जंभमभ्यर्दयद्रणे । जंभोऽपि सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्भित्त्वा तं मूर्च्छितं जहौ
Mālyavān then assailed Jambha in battle with showers of arrows; Jambha, too, pierced him with sharp shafts, and left him unconscious.
महापार्श्वो रथं धृत्वा बाणौघैर्वाजिवर्जितम् । लीलयैव च खे नीत्वा व्यश्वं चंडमपातयत्
Mahāpārśva seized a chariot, and with showers of arrows deprived it of its horses; then, effortlessly, he carried it through the sky and cast Caṇḍa from it.
व्यश्वं रथं विलोक्याथ ततश्चंडोऽग्रहीद्गजम् । आपतंतं महापार्श्वं चंडस्तं गदयाहनत्
Seeing the chariot without horses, Caṇḍa then seized an elephant; as Mahāpārśva approached, Caṇḍa struck him with a mace.
अचिंत्यैव गदापातं सोऽसुरो भृशदारुणः । प्रहत्य मुष्टिना चंडं पातयामास भूतले
With an unimaginable blow of the mace, that fierce demon struck; then, with his fist, he knocked Caṇḍa to the ground.
चंडीशशस्त्राभिहतो रोमकंठो महासुरः । चंडीशं पादयोर्धृत्वा रथमूर्ध्नि न्यपातयत्
Struck by Caṇḍīśa's weapon, Romakaṇṭha, the great demon, seized Caṇḍīśa by the feet and threw him onto the chariot's roof.
पपात सहसा भूमौ ययौ तं भीषणेक्षणः । उरुनेत्रेण समरे हतो लंबोदरः शरैः 6.17.
He suddenly fell to the ground, and the one with terrifying gaze approached him; in battle, Lambodara was slain by Ūrunetra's arrows.
दंतेनोरसि तं हत्वा पातयामास भूतले । ऊरुनेत्रः क्षणाच्छांतिमागत्याशु रथं क्षणात्
Having killed him with his tusk in the chest, he cast him to the ground; Ūrunetra quickly regained composure and mounted his chariot at once.
जघान मुद्गरेणासौ मूर्ध्नि सिंदूरमंडिते । गणेश्वरः पट्टिशेन जघानोरसि दानवम्
He struck with a mace upon the head adorned with vermilion; the lord of the ganas pierced the demon in the chest with a spear.
तन्मुखादथ निष्क्रांतो नवशीर्षोऽसुरो महान् । अष्टादशभुजो राजन्सोऽप्यधावत शांकरिम्
Then, from his mouth emerged a great demon with nine heads, eighteen arms, O king, who rushed toward Shankara.
नवशीर्षोरुनेत्राभ्यां रणे रुद्धो विनायकः । जर्जरीकृतदेहोऽपि जग्राह परशुं रुषा
Vinayaka was blocked in battle by the nine-headed one and the wide-eyed one; though his body was battered, he seized his axe in anger.
तेन चिच्छेद शस्त्राणि तयोराजौ गणेश्वरः । रुद्धं गणेश्वरं दृष्ट्वा ताभ्यां संख्येऽथ षण्मुखः
With that, the lord of the ganas cut the weapons of those two kings; seeing Ganeshvara restrained by them in battle, Shanmukha—
शीघ्रमागत्य सेनानीर्जघान नवशीर्षकम् । नवशीर्षं रणे हत्वा उरुनेत्रमधावत
The commander quickly arrived and slew the nine-headed one; after killing him in battle, he rushed toward the wide-eyed one.
स्कंदः स्वशक्तिघातेन पातयामास तं नृप । पश्यञ्जालंधरः स्कंदं ययौ सैन्येन संवृतः
Skanda, by the blow of his own spear, made him fall, O king; seeing this, Jalandhara advanced toward Skanda, surrounded by his army.
