In battle, the indomitable one released them like clouds pouring rain; Śaṃbhu's attendants restrained the advancing son of the ocean.
Then, struck in anger by Rudra and his fierce showers of arrows, Jālaṃdhara's armor was cast down to the earth by Rudra's arrows.
Even without armor, he shone like a mountain released from clouds; again, Jālaṃdhara's body was pierced by Śaṃbhu's arrows.
Much blood flowed from Jālaṃdhara's body; with that torrent of blood, the entire earth was quickly flooded.
Then the gods were seized by fear, and the Dānavas trembled; abandoning the battlefield, the heroic Pramathas fled.
Like a river, his form spread everywhere; then the son of the ocean addressed Rudra: 'O bearer of the bow, you are indeed excellent.'
'Now I shall do that by which you will meet your destruction.' Saying this, he took up Kālakedāra with its arrows.
Swiftly he filled Śiva with arrows of many kinds; Śiva, his body filled with billions of arrows, shone in battle.
Just as the sky is filled with birds, or a great mountain with trees, so too was Maheshvara surrounded by the asuras, their praises, and their arrows.
Then Virabhadra, enraged, rushed at Jalandhara and, possessing an unconquerable spirit, struck the mighty son of the ocean.
Jalandhara, now furious, pierced with thousands of arrows the bow, arrows, chariot, umbrella, and charioteer of Virabhadra, breaking them to pieces.
The powerful son of the ocean did this to Virabhadra, but then Virabhadra, deprived of his chariot, struck the ocean-born with his mace.
Likewise, with his mace, he struck him down to the ground; seeing him fallen from the blow of the mace, he was deeply stunned.
Then Manibhadra rushed at Jalandhara in battle; seeing him approach in great anger, the asura in the great war—
The son of the river rendered his opponent's weapons useless with arrows; then, abandoning his faint, he rose up, roaring like a lion.
Then, out of anger, the mighty Virabhadra and Manibhadra struck the river's son, who was in the sky, with mountains.
Seeing the mountains fall upon his body and hearing their crash, Virabhadra struck the river's son with a blow of his fist.
Manibhadra, seizing the son of the ocean by the feet, whirled him from the chariot; it was as if something marvelous had occurred.
Even when seized by Manibhadra, the mighty king of the asuras struck down Manibhadra with a blow of his foot.
Jalandhara, strong-armed, struck Virabhadra with his fist; then Nandikeshvara arrived, surrounded by his hosts.
Seeing him arrive, Shumbha blocked him along with his soldiers; then the hosts and the asuras engaged each other in single combat.
Shumbha fought Shiladaja, Rahu fought Mahakala in battle; then Nishumbha fought Kolahala, and Ketu rushed at Kala.
Shailodara fought Guha, the mighty Jambha fought Malyavan; Mahaparsva fought Chanda, and Chandisha fought Romakantaka.
Then Vikatashya fought Bhringi, Murunetra fought Vinayaka; thus, the leaders of the hosts engaged the lords of the asuras.
Then Shiladaja, struck by Shumbha's weapons and arrows, shattered him with great mountain peaks, like the beak of a great bird.
Shumbha, wounded by him, struck Shilada with a spear and killed him; then Mahakala killed Rahu at the head of the battle.
Then, with his power, Kolāhala destroyed the chariot of Niśumbha, the mighty one; Kolāhala was struck down by Niśumbha's prowess.
Taking up a spear, he attacked the chariot along with its charioteer; the demon, now without a chariot and greatly enraged, fought fiercely in battle.
Kolāhala was slain by Indra, the lord of the gods, with the thousand-headed serpent; after killing him with great speed, Indra approached another chariot.
Struck by the serpent-disc in battle, he quickly recovered from unconsciousness; leaping swiftly from his own chariot, he seized sword and shield.
