इत्युक्त्वा निजमास्थाय रूपं सा प्राह तं पुनः । अनेन बत पापेन हतस्त्वं हि पिनाकिना
Having said this, she assumed her own form and spoke again: 'By this sinful act, you are surely destroyed by Pinaki.'
इति ज्ञात्वा च सा प्राप्ता तत्र गत्वाब्रवीदुमाम् । देवि जालंधरो ह्येष न शंभुस्तव वल्लभः
Knowing this, she went and told Uma: 'Devi, this is Jalandhara, not Shambhu, your beloved.'
ततो भयार्ता हरवल्लभाभूद्द्रुतं विवेशाथ सरोजमध्ये । सख्यो भ्रमर्यः कमलेषु जाता भयेन जालंधरजेन राजन्
Then, terrified, the beloved of Hara swiftly entered the center of a lotus; her companions, the bee-maidens, became lotuses out of fear of Jalandhara, O King.
अत्रांतरे वनगतामदृष्ट्वा तां नृपांगनाम् । भीतास्तु रक्षकास्तस्याः सत्वरं रणमाययुः
Meanwhile, when the royal guards in the forest did not see her, they became afraid and hurried at once to the battlefield.
ततः शुंभेन ते पृष्टास्तं नत्वोचुः ससाध्वसाः । आत्मनः परिहारार्थो विष्णुमित्यसुरेश्वरम्
Then Śumbha questioned them, and bowing with fear, they said to the lord of the demons, 'It was for their own safety that they sought refuge with Viṣṇu.'
श्रुत्वा वृंदां हृतां त्रस्तो रुद्रात्त्यक्त्वाथ संगरम् । शुंभेन प्रेषितौ चंडमुंडौ जालंधरं प्रति
Hearing that Vṛndā had been taken, Rudra, frightened, left the battle; Śumbha then sent Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa to Jalandhara.
मानसोत्तरमागत्य दानवौ वेगवत्तरौ । हररूपधरं दैत्यं ऊचतुर्विटपान्तरे
The two swift demons arrived at the northern shore of the lake and spoke to the demon, who had taken the form of Hara, from behind the trees.
किं तया नृपशार्दूल विदेशगतया श्रिया । अरयो यां न पश्यंति बंधुभिर्या न भुज्यते
O tiger among kings, what is the use of that fortune which has gone to another land, which enemies do not see, and which is not enjoyed by relatives?
जितः शुंभो हतं सैन्यं देव रुद्रेण ते रणे । एह्येहि कुरु संग्रामं न त्वं प्राप्नोषि पार्वतीम्
Śumbha has been defeated, his army destroyed by Rudra in battle; come, fight now—you will not obtain Pārvatī.
पंचाननस्य महिषीं कथं प्राप्नोति जंबुकः । अंधकारः कथं राजन्प्राप्नोति सवितुः प्रभाम्
How can a jackal obtain the queen of the five-faced one? O King, how can darkness ever reach the radiance of the sun?
तव जालंधरात्पीठाद्धृता राज्ञी मुरारिणा । इति संश्रूयते वार्ता तस्मात्त्वं कुरु संगरम्
Your queen has been taken from your seat by Murāri; such is the news heard—therefore, you must wage battle.
रणे शर्वं विजित्याशु भव सर्वेश्वरेश्वरः । अथवा शिवनाराचैः खंडितो यासि तत्पदम्
Conquer Śarva swiftly in battle and become lord of all lords; or, struck down by Śiva's arrows, you will reach that supreme state.
इति जालंधरः श्रुत्वा भाषितं चंडमुंडयोः । निःससार गिरेस्तस्मात्सक्रोधं रक्तलोचनः
Hearing the words of Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, Jalandhara emerged from the mountain, his eyes red with anger.
चंडमुंडौ समाश्वास्य त्यक्त्वा रूपं हरस्य च । गच्छञ्जालंधरो मार्गे दुर्वारणमुवाच ह
After reassuring Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa and abandoning the form of Hara, Jalandhara, on his way, spoke to Durvāraṇa.
पश्य दुर्वारणेदानीं तत्र यद्विष्णुना कृतम् । मायामाश्रित्य सा राज्ञी वृंदा नीतात्मनः पदम्
Look, Durvāraṇa, at what Viṣṇu has now done there; by his illusion, that queen Vṛndā has been led to her own place.
गृहे स्थितस्य जामातुर्विश्वसेन्नैव बुद्धिमान् । नूनं तस्मै प्रदत्वा च कन्यकां विसृजेद्बुधः
A wise man should never fully trust a son-in-law who stays in his house; surely, after giving him a daughter, he should send him away.
जामातरं गृहे नैव स्थापयेत्सर्वथा नरः । धनदारादिकं सर्वं स गृह्णाति शनैः शनैः
A man should never keep his son-in-law in his house under any circumstances; for, little by little, he takes all wealth, wives, and everything else.
दुर्वारण उवाच- राजन्यत्क्रियते कर्म तत्तथैव तु भुज्यते । त्वं हर्तुमागतो गौरीं हरिणा ते हृता वधूः । तस्य स्पष्टं वचः श्रुत्वा क्षणं मौनी व्यचिंतयत्
Durvāraṇa said: 'O King, whatever action is done, that is exactly what is experienced; you came to seize Gaurī, but Hari has taken your bride. Hearing these clear words, he became silent for a moment and reflected.'
जालंधर उवाच- किं प्रयामि हरं जेतुमथवा हरिमुल्बणम् । कार्यद्वये समुत्पन्ने यत्परं तत्प्रकथ्यताम्
Jalandhara said: 'Should I go to defeat Hara, or should I attack Hari, the fierce one? Two tasks have arisen—tell me which is the greater.'
दुर्वारण उवाच- यदि यासि हरिं जेतुं हरः पृष्ठे हनिष्यति । हनिष्यंति रणे शूरा यातुं रुद्रो न दास्यति
Durvāraṇa said: 'If you go to defeat Hari, Hara will strike you from behind; the heroes will kill you in battle, and Rudra will not let you proceed.'
तस्मात्पशुपतिं जित्वा कृत्वा त्वं वश्यमात्मनः । पश्चात्प्रयाहि गोविंदं यदि जानासि तत्पदम्
Therefore, having conquered Paśupati and brought him under your control, then proceed to Govinda, if you know that supreme state.
अधुना सत्वरं वीर याहि दैत्यान्महाबलान् । रणं कुरु महाघोरं यथा स्वर्गे सुपच्यते
Now, hero, go swiftly to the mighty Daityas; wage a fierce battle so that you may be glorified in heaven.
देशकालोचितं श्रुत्वा दुर्वारणवचस्तदा । ययौ जालंधरो योद्धुं सह रुद्रेण योगिना
Hearing those words suited to the time and place, irresistible, Jālaṃdhara went to fight together with Rudra, the yogin.
नारद उवाच- अथ जालंधरोऽपश्यत्कबंधचयभीषणम् । रणं रुधिरमांसौघ मज्जा मेदोऽस्थिदुर्गमम्
Nārada said: Then Jālaṃdhara saw a terrifying battlefield strewn with heaps of corpses, rivers of blood and flesh, and fortresses of marrow, fat, and bone.
तत्र जालंधरो दैत्यः प्रियाहरणदुःखितः । रणे विलोकयामास वृषस्थं पार्वतीपतिम्
There, the Daitya Jālaṃdhara, distressed by the abduction of his beloved, gazed in battle at Parvatī's lord seated upon the bull.
घोराहिभोगेनविभूषितांगं जटाकलापे शशिभूषणांकितम् । नेत्राग्निकीलोपरिशोभितांगं विना रणं संप्रददर्श सिंधुजः
His body adorned with dreadful serpent ornaments, his hair matted and crowned with the moon, his form radiant above all with the fire of his eyes—Sindhuja beheld him without engaging in battle.
शीघ्रं स्वरथमारुह्य समुद्रतनयस्तदा । संरुष्टः प्राह तं शुंभं तापसो न हतस्त्वया
Quickly mounting his chariot, the son of the ocean, enraged, addressed Śuṃbha: 'The ascetic has not been slain by you.'
प्राह जालंधरं शुंभस्तपस्तेन महत्कृतम् । हंतुं न शक्यतेऽस्माभिर्हरः संग्रामदुर्जयः
Śuṃbha said to Jālaṃdhara: 'Through great austerity he has become invincible; we are unable to kill Hara, who is unconquerable in battle.'
इतिशुंभोक्तमाकर्ण्यसिंधुजःक्रोधमूर्च्छितः । हरं पद्मसहस्रेण दैत्यसैन्येन संवृतम्
Hearing Śuṃbha's words, Sindhuja, overcome by anger, surrounded Hara with a thousand lotuses and the army of Daityas.
गृहीत्वा कालकेदारं धनुर्जालंधरो ययौ । बाणांस्तीक्ष्णानतिस्थूलान्लोहस्तंभान्तथा बहून्
Taking the bow Kālakedāra, Jālaṃdhara advanced, carrying many sharp and massive arrows, as well as iron pillars.
