Seeing the ground covered with the slain by the immortals, the demon soldiers wailed; then a battle arose between the hosts and the demons.
A fierce shower of arrows from the demons and the celestials followed; then the peacock-faced ones struck down all the elephants in battle.
The mighty Kakatunda slew chariots, horses, and foot soldiers; the groups of demons, skilled in battle, were struck down.
The sky was filled with heads, grinning and terrifying; with loose hair, red faces, dreadful fangs, and glaring eyes.
With lions, Kabandhas, and fierce ones, their thighs, waists, and backs severed; everywhere the earth was strewn with Kabandhas, red with blood.
Then a tremendous roar arose among the armies of the demon lords as they charged; the hosts of Shambhu, having struck down the soldiers, sounded like the ocean at the end of the age.
Narada said: Seeing the demon army slain by the hosts led by Nandi, Shumbha and the other demons, enraged, came against the hosts.
Then Shumbha, the great demon, fought Nandi; Nishumbha fought Mahakala, and Kala fought the lord of the world in battle.
Pushpadanta, Shailaroma, and Malyavant, mighty ones, and Kolahala, O King, entered the battle with magical power.
Chanda, named Bhayanaka, and Rahu rushed at Skanda; Kushmanda, Sarparoma, Ghaghara, and Madana likewise.
Shubha, Ketumukha went to slay Jambha and Vinayaka; Hasa, Patalaketu, Bhringisha, and Romakantaka.
Rudra's hosts and the demons fought each other in countless numbers; both sides' masters watched as they battled.
The fierce-striking Daitya hosts attacked with arrows; Nandi released those arrows at them, like a great torrent upon a mountain.
Then he filled Shumbha's face with arrows, as the wind fills a mountain's cave with heaps of leaves.
Shumbha, abandoning his bow, rushed from his chariot toward him; uprooting a mountain, he struck Nandi in the chest with it.
Piercing Nandi's heart and shattering his chariot in battle, that mountain fell to the ground as a mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
Having lost consciousness, he regained his senses after a moment and fled swiftly; Mahakala was struck in the chest by Nishumbha with a mace.
Coming up, he struck the Daitya on the crown with his mace; even the mighty Nishumbha found that blow inconceivable.
That powerful one seized Mahakala by the feet, whirled him around, hurled him from his hand, and roared.
Drinking in the wind from his mouth, he roared, blood-red; Pushpadanta was struck in the face by Shailaroman with his fist.
With his mace, he struck down Shailaroman and cast him to the ground; seeing him fallen, the mighty Giriketu—
Struck the terrifying Pushpadanta with a club; then Pushpadanta, with a sword, severed Giriketu's head.
Taking Giriketu's shield and sword, he advanced; the head said, 'Why do you go, leaving me, who seek battle?'
'Now that my body is without a head, do you not feel shame as you run?' So spoke the head, and with that, the trunk seized him by the feet.
Pushpadanta, held fast, cut open the belly with a sharp sword; from the belly emerged the mighty Asura Shatashirsha.
He was endowed with two hundred eyes and crowded with two hundred arms; his head, spinning, approached the trunk's side, O King.
Seeing that head arrive, Pushpadanta cut it with his sword; then appeared the Daitya fever named Bhukampana, terrifying.
There, Pushpadanta was then assailed by two, O King; afflicted by that fever, intolerable and exceedingly swift.
Abandoning the Shiva hosts, trembling, he went to the mountain; Kolahala, the great archer, struck Malyavan with three arrows.
He pierced Malyavan in the shoulders and forehead; then Malyavan, struck by arrows, wounded the Asura with various sharp weapons.
