तस्यां तटिन्यां भगवत्परिचर्यापरायणान् । असौ ददर्श दुष्टात्मा ब्राह्मणाकृतिनो बहून्
There, that wicked-souled man saw many Brahmins, engaged in the service of the Lord, gathered on the riverbank.
अथ ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे समाराध्य जनार्दनम् । अन्योन्यं कथयामासुर्विहिता अति कौतुकात्
Then all those Brahmins, having worshipped Janardana, began to speak among themselves, full of great curiosity.
अद्य चंपकपुष्पाणि मया त्यक्तानि तानि वै । कश्चिद्वदति तांबूलं मया दत्तं मुरारये
"Today I have offered champaka flowers," one said; another, "I have given betel leaves to Murari."
न खादितव्यं तांबूलं कदाचिदपि जन्मनि । मयाद्य हरये दत्तं कदलीफलमुत्तमम्
"Betel leaves should never be eaten in any birth; today I have given the finest plantain fruit to Hari," said another.
जन्मजन्मानि च मया भक्ष्यं च कदलीफलम् । कोऽपि वक्ति मया दत्तं हरये दाडिमीफलम्
"For many births I have eaten plantain fruit; someone else says, 'I have given a pomegranate to Hari.'"
कोऽपि वक्ति मया दत्तं रसालफलमुत्तमम् । अन्योऽन्यमेतद्वदतां तेषां श्रुत्वा वचांसि च
"Someone says, 'I have given the finest mango to Hari.'" Hearing these words as they spoke among themselves—
उर्वीशुश्चिन्तयामास किं प्रदास्यामि विष्णवे । संसारे यानि वस्तूनि भक्ष्याणि संति तान्यहम्
He thought to himself, 'What shall I offer to Vishnu? Of all the things in the world that can be eaten, I have them.'
न हि शक्नोमि संत्यक्तुं किं दास्यामि मुरारये । नित्यं वनांतरस्थोऽहं चौरो राजभयाकुलः
'But I am unable to give up anything—what can I give to Murari? I always dwell in the forest, a thief, fearful of the king.'
शकटारोहणे नास्ति ह्यधिकारः कदापि मे । व्यास उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा दस्युना तेन भूयोभूयो द्विजोत्तम
'I have never had the right to ride in a cart.' Vyasa said: Thus, again and again, that bandit spoke, O best of Brahmins.
शकटं हरये दत्तं चतुर्वर्गप्रदायिने । अथ तेब्राह्मणाः सर्वे जग्मुर्विप्र यथागताः
'I have given a cart to Hari, the bestower of the four aims of life.' Then all those Brahmins departed as they had come, O Brahmin.
सोऽपि दस्युर्दस्युभिश्च जगाम निजमाश्रयम् । एकदा गुडकंडोलं तेनैव खलु वर्त्मना
That bandit, along with the other bandits, also returned to his own refuge; once, taking the same path, he came to Gudakandola.
गृहीत्वा पथिकः कश्चित्काकीमंडलमागतः । ततोऽसौ सहसा दस्युर्निर्भयः परहिंसकः
There, a certain traveler, carrying a load, arrived at Kakimandala; then that bandit, fearless and violent, suddenly—
जहार गुडकंडोलमध्वनीनस्य तस्य च । अथ ते दस्यवश्चक्रुर्गुडकंडोल भंजनम्
He seized the lump of jaggery belonging to the honey seller; then those robbers broke the lump of jaggery.
उर्वीशुश्चापतद्भागे शकटं गुडनिर्मितम् । उर्वीशुः शकटं गौडं समासाद्य द्विजोत्तम
The king Urvīśu fell upon the portion where the cart made of jaggery was; O best of twice-born, Urvīśu approached the jaggery cart.
मनसा चिंतयामास वचःस्मरणपूर्वकम् । अनो मया पुरा दत्तं स्वयमेव मुरारये
He pondered in his mind, recalling the words: 'That offering was once given by me myself to Murāri.'
तस्मादनो न मे ग्राह्यं कदाचिदिह जन्मनि । विचिन्त्येति हृदा दातुं तदनो गुडनिर्मितम्
Therefore, that offering is not to be accepted by me at any time in this life; thus, considering in his heart, he resolved to give that jaggery-made offering.
दत्तं विप्राय कस्मैचिन्माधवप्रीतिहेतवे । तां भक्तिं तस्य विज्ञाय महापातकिनो द्विज
He gave it to a certain Brahmin for the sake of pleasing Mādhava; recognizing his devotion, O Brahmin, even though he was a great sinner,
जहार सकलं पापं सद्यः प्रीतो जनार्दनः । तस्मिन्नेव दिने विप्र प्रविश्य च महावनम्
Janārdana, pleased at once, removed all his sin; on that very day, the Brahmin entered the great forest.
हतः पौरजनैः सर्वैरथ क्रुद्धैः स उर्विशुः । भगवानथ तं नेतुं विमानं स्वर्णनिर्मितम्
Then Urvīśu was slain by all the townspeople, who were angry; then the Lord sent a golden chariot to fetch him.
दूतांश्च प्रेषयामास नानाभरणभूषितान् । अथ ते भगवद्दूतास्तमुर्वीशुं गतैनसम्
He dispatched messengers adorned with various ornaments; then those divine messengers went to Urvīśu, who had departed.
समारोप्य विमाने तं सद्यो जग्मुः पुरं हरेः । ततौऽसौ हरिसान्निध्यं प्राप्य पुण्यात्मनां वरः
Placing him in the chariot, they immediately went to the city of Hari; then he attained the presence of Hari, the best among the virtuous.
पुनर्मन्वंतरशतं स्थित्वा केशवसन्निधिम् । परमं ज्ञानमासाद्य स विवेश तनुं हरेः
After remaining for a hundred ages in the presence of Keśava, he attained supreme knowledge and entered the form of Hari.
व्यास उवाच- येन केनाप्युपायेन हरिभक्तिकरो नरः । संसारजलधेः पारं राजहंस इव व्रजन्
Vyāsa said: By whatever means a man cultivates devotion to Hari, he crosses the ocean of worldly existence like a royal swan.
क्षणमेव हरेर्भक्तिर्वर्तते यस्य चेतसि । तत्पदं परमं याति स पापात्मापि गच्छति
Even if devotion to Hari arises for a moment in someone's mind, he attains the supreme abode—even a sinner goes there.
एकमप्युत्तमं वस्तु दत्वाऽसौ तन्मुरारये । स्वयमेव हि भोक्तव्यं पश्चात्पापोपशांतये
By offering even a single excellent thing to Murāri, one must later partake of it oneself for the pacification of sin.
यद्वस्तु हरये दत्तं तच्च दद्याद्दिवजातये । किंचिच्छेषं न भोक्तव्यं तस्यावश्यं स्वयं बुधैः
Whatever is given to Hari should also be given to a twice-born; whatever remains should not be consumed by oneself, this is always taught by the wise.
वस्तूनि ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठमिष्टानि यानि कानि च । अदत्वा विष्णवे तानि न भोक्तव्यानि वैष्णवैः
O best of Brahmins, whatever desirable things there are, unless they are offered to Viṣṇu, they should not be consumed by Vaiṣṇavas.
विष्णुनैवेद्यमाहात्म्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् । सेतिहासं पुनर्वच्मि शृणु विप्र समाहितः
The greatness of Viṣṇu's offerings is the destruction of all sin; I will again tell you this story, listen attentively, O Brahmin.
आसीत्सर्वजनिर्नाम ब्राह्मणः शुद्धवंशजः । शांतो दांतो दयायुक्तो गुरुब्राह्मणपूजकः
There was a Brahmin named Sarvajanī, born of a pure lineage; peaceful, self-controlled, endowed with compassion, devoted to his teachers and Brahmins.
हरेः पूजापरश्चैव हरिस्मरणतत्परः । प्रपन्नक्लेशविध्वंसी सत्यवादी जितेन्द्रियः ५० 7.19.
He was devoted to the worship of Hari and intent on remembering Hari; he destroyed the sufferings of those who sought refuge, spoke truth, and had mastered his senses.
