विश्वकर्मा च तेनास्त्रं विमानानि च निर्ममे । ततस्ते निर्ज्जरा भीत्या दृष्ट्वा चक्रं सुदर्शनम्
Vishvakarma fashioned with it a weapon and flying machines; then the immortals, seeing the Sudarshana discus, were afraid.
त्राहित्राहीति देवेशं प्रत्यूचुस्ते सुरान्नृप । पृथ्वीकाठिन्यमादाय लोहानामपि तेजसाम्
They cried out, 'Save us! Save us!' to the Lord of the gods, O king; taking the hardness of earth and the energy of metals—
यद्विश्वकर्मणा कोशं कृतं भस्मीकृतं च तत् । सृष्टेन तेन चक्रेण दग्धः कालोऽपतत्क्षितौ
The casing made by Vishvakarma was reduced to ashes; struck by that discus, Time itself fell burned to the earth.
ततस्तद्ब्रह्मणो हस्ते ददौ चक्रं स धूर्जटिः । चक्रार्चिर्निचयैः कूर्चं दृष्ट्वा दग्धमुमापतिः
Then Dhurjati gave that discus into Brahma's hand; seeing the bundle of discus-flames, the Lord of Uma was burned.
हसित्वा ब्रह्मणो हस्ताद्गृहीत्वा सत्वरं शिवः । दधौ कक्षापुटे चक्रं निधानं निर्धनो यथा
Laughing, Shiva quickly took the discus from Brahma's hand and placed it in the fold of his garment, as a poor man stores his treasure.
ततो न दृश्यते चक्रं शिवकक्षापुटेस्थितम् । महामूर्खस्य यद्दत्तं दानं तस्य फलं यथा
Then the discus was no longer seen, kept in Shiva's garment-fold, just as the fruit of a gift given to a great fool is unseen.
नारद उवाच- अत्रोत्तरे मया गत्वा कथितं सिंधुसूनवे । त्वां हंतु सर्ववीरेश प्रतिज्ञा शंभुना कृता । श्रुत्वेत्थं मद्वचो राजंस्ततः पप्रच्छ सोऽसुरः
Nārada said: Then, O King, I went to the son of the ocean and told him that Śaṃbhu had vowed to slay you, the lord of all heroes. Hearing my words, that asura questioned me.
जालंधर उवाच-। किमस्ति शूलिनो गेहे रत्नजातं महामुने । तन्ममाचक्ष्व सकलं नास्ति युद्धं निरामिषम्
Jālandhara said: O great sage, is there any treasure of gems in the house of the Trident-bearer? Tell me everything, for there is no battle without a prize.
नारद उवाच-। भूतिर्गात्रे वृषो जीर्णः फणिनोंऽगे गले विषम् । भिक्षापात्रं करे पुत्रौ गजानन षडाननौ
Nārada said: Ashes on his body, an old bull as his mount, serpents as ornaments, poison at his throat, a begging bowl in his hand, and his sons are the elephant-faced and six-faced ones.
इत्यादि विभवस्तस्य यदन्यत्तन्निबोध मे । तनया गिरिराजस्य विशाला ह्युन्नतस्तनी
Such is his wealth; listen to what else he possesses: his wife is the daughter of the mountain king, vast-hipped and high-breasted.
दग्धस्मरोऽपि भगवान्यस्यारूपेण मोहितः । महेशो यद्विनोदाय कुरुते नित्य कौतुकम्
Though the god of love was burned by him, even he is enchanted by her form; Maheśa, for his own delight, is ever engaged in playful acts.
नृत्यन्गायंश्च ताञ्छंभुः स्वयं भवति हासकः । सा पार्वतीति विख्याता सौंदर्यावधि दैवतम्
Dancing and singing, Śaṃbhu himself becomes her jester; she is renowned as Pārvatī, the very limit of beauty among the gods.
वृंदा वरांगना राजन्निमाश्चाप्सरसः शुभाः । न चाप्नुवंति पार्वत्याः षोडशीमपि तां कलाम्
Vṛndā is a most excellent woman, and these other lovely apsarases, O King, but none of them attain even a sixteenth part of Pārvatī's beauty.
इत्युक्त्वाहं महीपाल जालंधरममर्षणम् । पश्यतां सर्वदैत्यानामंतर्धानं गतः क्षणात्
Having said this, O ruler of the earth, I vanished from Jālandhara, who was seething with anger, in the sight of all the daityas, in a moment.
अथ स प्रेषयद्दूतं सिंधुजः सिंहिकासुतम् । क्षणेनासाद्य कैलासं देवावासमपश्यत
Then the son of the ocean sent a messenger, the son of Siṃhikā; in a moment, he reached Kailāsa and beheld the abode of the gods.
अत्रांतरे हरिर्भीममापृच्छ्य तु तदा हरम् । जगामालक्षितस्तूर्णं क्षीराब्धिं भेदशंकया
Meanwhile, Hari, after taking leave of Bhīma, secretly and swiftly went to the Milk Ocean, fearing a breach.
ददर्श राहुर्भवनं शंकरस्यातिदीप्तिमत् । आत्मानमात्मना वीक्ष्य किमित्याह सुविस्मितः
Rāhu beheld the exceedingly radiant mansion of Śaṃkara; seeing himself reflected, he wondered greatly and asked, 'What is this?'
प्रवेष्टुकामो बलिभिर्द्वारि द्वास्थैर्निरोधितः । यत्नवान्स निषिद्धोऽपि तदा ते प्रोद्यतायुधाः
Desiring to enter, he was stopped at the door by the powerful doorkeepers; though he tried, they forbade him, brandishing their weapons.
तान्निवार्य गणान्नंदी व्याजहार विधुंतुदम् । कस्त्वं कस्मादिहायातः किं कार्यं तव बर्बर । ब्रूहि कार्यं गणा यावत्त्वां न हन्युर्भयावहाः
Then Nandī restrained the gaṇas and addressed the moon-biter: 'Who are you? Why have you come here, barbarian? State your business before the gaṇas, or they, who inspire terror, will slay you.'
राहुरुवाच-। दूतो जालंधरस्याहं त्वं मां शर्वांतिके नय । न वाच्यमंतरे द्वास्थ महाराजप्रयोजनम्
Rāhu said: 'I am the messenger of Jālandhara. Take me before Śarva. The king's business is not to be spoken of at the gate, doorkeeper.'
नंदी दूतोक्तमाकर्ण्य नीललोहितमाययौ । दंडवत्प्रणिपत्याग्रे स्थित्वा शंकरमब्रवीत्
Hearing the words of the messenger, Nandī went to the blue-throated one; bowing down with joined palms, he stood before Śaṃkara and spoke.
सैंहिकेयो महाराज द्वारे तिष्ठति कार्यतः । स प्रयात्वथवायातु भवानाज्ञप्तुमर्हति
'O great king, the son of Siṃhikā stands at the door on business; let him go, or let your command be given.'
नंदिनोक्तमथाकर्ण्य त्वरन्निव महेश्वरः । सुप्तामंतःपुराद्देवीं प्रस्थाप्य च सखीवृताम्
Hearing Nandī's words, Maheśvara, as if in haste, sent the goddess, who was sleeping in the inner chambers, away with her companions.
पश्चाद्वास्थं जगादाथ नंदिन्दूतं प्रवेशय । ततो हस्ते प्रगृह्यामुं दूतं नंदी महाबलः
Then he told the doorkeeper: 'Nandī, bring in the messenger.' So mighty Nandī took the messenger by the hand.
आनयामास देवानां मध्ये शंभुमदर्शयत् । तं ददर्श तदा राहुर्जटिलं नीलमात्मनि
He brought Śaṃbhu among the gods and showed him; then Rāhu saw him, matted-haired and dark in appearance.
पंचवक्त्रं दशभुजं नागयज्ञोपवीतिनम् । देवीविरहितं मूर्ध्नि चंद्रलेखाविभूषितम्
He beheld him with five faces, ten arms, adorned with a serpent as sacred thread, without the goddess, and with a crescent moon ornamenting his head.
उच्छ्वासोच्छ्वासनिर्मुंचत्पृदाकुगणसेवितम् । सर्वदेवगणोपेतं सेवितं गणकोटिभिः
Attended by hosts of Pramathas exhaling and inhaling, surrounded by all the assemblies of gods, served by countless Gaṇas.
प्राप्तं ज्ञात्वा ततो दूतं शंभुरालोक्य चाग्रतः । प्राह ब्रूहि तदा राहुर्वक्तुं समुपचक्रमे
Realizing the messenger had arrived, Śaṃbhu looked before him; then Rāhu began to speak.
राहुरुवाच-। देव जालंधरेणाहं प्रेषितस्तव सन्निधौ । तस्य शिववचः श्रुत्वा मन्मुखेन द्रुतं कुरु
Rāhu said: O god, I have been sent by Jālandhara to your presence; having heard Śiva’s words, quickly do as I say.
गिरिशत्वं तपोनिष्ठो निर्गुणो धर्मवर्जितः । तव नास्ति पिता माता वसु गोत्रादि वर्जितः
O Lord of the Mountain, you are devoted to austerity, without qualities, devoid of righteousness; you have neither father nor mother, nor lineage or family.
