सुषमा सुंदरी यत्र घृताची पुंजिकस्थली । सुकेशी सुमुखी रामा मंजुघोषा च मालिनी
There are Sushama, Sundari, Ghritachi, Punjikasthali, Sakeshi, Sumukhi, Rama, Manjughosha, and Malini.
मृगोद्भवा च सुखदा धनदंष्ट्रा तिलप्रभा । वाजिमेधफलग्राहा राजसूयफलंति याः
There are Mrigodbhava, Sukhadā, Dhanadamshtra, Tilaprabha, and those who receive the fruit of the horse sacrifice and the fruit of the Rajasuya sacrifice.
कोटिशो यत्र निःष्पापाः क्रीडंत्यप्सरसो नृप । एवं भूरिसुखे स्वर्गे स्थापयामास सिंधुजः
O King, there, millions of sinless apsarases play; thus, the son of the ocean established many pleasures in heaven.
शुंभं प्राणसमं दैत्यं निशुंभं युवराजके । स्वयं जालंधरे पीठे स्वर्गादागत्य सिंधुराट् । वर्षार्बुदद्वयं राज्यं चकारात्मबलेन च
He made Shumbha, a demon dear as his own life, and Nishumbha, the crown prince, and himself, the lord of the ocean, after coming from heaven, ruled the kingdom of Jalandhara by his own strength for two aeons.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच-। युयुधेऽसुर संग्रामे ससुरैरपराजितः
Yudhishthira said: Did the asura, undefeated, fight in battle with the gods?
ततः किमकरोद्राजा सिंधुसूनुः प्रतापवान् । तन्ममाचक्ष्व देवर्षे श्रोतुकामस्य विस्तरात्
Then what did the mighty son of Sindhu do, O sage? Tell me in detail, for I wish to hear.
नारद उवाच-। शृणु राजन्यथातथ्यं कृतसागरसूनुना । स देवान्समरे जित्वा राज्यं चक्रे ह्यकंटकम्
Narada said: O King, listen as it truly happened, to what was done by the son of the ocean; having defeated the gods in battle, he ruled the kingdom without opposition.
गंधर्वाश्चित्रसेनाद्याः सेवंते चासुरेश्वरम् । यज्ञभागांश्च यो भुंक्ते सर्वेषामसुरेश्वरः
Gandharvas like Citraratha and others serve the lord of the asuras; and he, the lord of asuras, enjoys the shares of sacrifice from all.
क्षीरसागरतो देवैर्हृतं रत्नादिकं च यत् । तत्सर्वं च तथान्यच्च निर्जित्य हृतवान्बली
All the jewels and treasures taken by the gods from the ocean of milk, and whatever else there was, the mighty one conquered and took them all.
समुद्रतनये राज्यं भुवो राजन्प्रशासति । न कश्चिन्म्रियते मर्त्यो नरकं कोऽपि न व्रजेत्
The son of the ocean rules the kingdom of the earth, O King; no mortal dies, and no one goes to hell.
न कलिप्रणयादन्यो न भोगादपरः क्षयः । न वंध्या दुर्भगा नारी नालंकारैर्विवर्जिता
There is no other destruction from the influence of Kali or from enjoyment; no woman is barren or unfortunate, nor is anyone without ornaments.
कुरूपा दुर्गता दुष्टाऽयशस्या न च दृश्यते । न तत्र विधवा नारी न कश्चिन्निर्द्धनो जनः
No one is ugly, poor, wicked, or disgraced; there is no widow, and no one is destitute.
दातारः संति सर्वत्र न प्रतिग्राहिणः क्वचित् । पुण्या जनाः प्रयच्छंति द्विजेभ्यो ह्यात्मनो धनम्
Everywhere there are givers, but nowhere any receivers; the virtuous people always give their own wealth to the twice-born.
रूपयौवनशालिन्यः सीमंतिन्यो गृहे गृहे । गोक्षीरं दधिसर्पिश्च यत्र निर्जरसो जनाः
In every house, women are endowed with beauty and youth, and there are cows' milk, curds, and ghee, and the people are like immortals.
मंगलं तत्र सर्वेषां न क्वचिद्वधबंधनम् । शरेण न च हिंसास्ति न कश्चित्केन बाध्यते
There is auspiciousness for all, and nowhere is there the bondage of marriage; there is no harm by weapons, and no one is troubled by anyone.
ऋणं न दृश्यते राजन्धनिनः संति सर्वतः । संतुष्टाः सर्वसस्याढ्याः प्रजाः सर्वत्रपार्थिव
No debt is seen, O King, and there are wealthy people everywhere; all people are content and rich in crops, everywhere, O prince.
केलीक्षुदंडप्रभवश्च दुग्धरसोऽति सुस्वादुतरो गृहे नृणाम् । शुश्राव नारीनरयोर्हितं वचो न चापहर्ताध्वनि गच्छतां सदा
The juice of sugarcane and the taste of milk are extremely sweet in the houses of men; women and men hear words beneficial to each other, and there is never any thief on the road.
पतंत्यखंडा नभसो यतस्ततो धाराश्च कर्मारविमिश्रसर्पिषः । संमिश्रिताः शर्करया परिश्रुताः समुद्रसूनोः स्मरणान्मुखे नृणाम्
From the sky, wherever, unbroken streams fall, mixed with ghee from the smith's fire, blended with sugar, and, by remembering the son of the ocean, they are heard to flow into the mouths of men.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच- इंद्रादिभिस्तदा देवैः किं कृतं द्विजसत्तम । जालंधरेण विजितैः स्वर्गराज्ये हृते सति
Yudhishthira said: O best of twice-born, what did Indra and the other gods do then, when Jalandhara had conquered them and taken the kingdom of heaven?
नारद उवाच-। अथ त्यक्त्वा दिवं देवाः प्रापुस्ते दुर्दशां चिरम् । न पीयूषं नैव यज्ञाः ययुः स्थानं स्वयंभुवः
Narada said: Then, abandoning heaven, the gods fell into misery for a long time; they had no nectar, nor were there sacrifices, nor did they reach the abode of Brahma.
ददृशुर्ब्राह्मभुवने ब्रह्माणं परमेष्ठिनम् । प्राणायामेन युंजानं मनः स्वं परमात्मनि
They saw in the world of Brahma the supreme creator, Brahma, engaged in breath control, merging his mind in the Supreme Self.
ते तुष्टुवुः सुराः सर्वे वाग्भिस्तथ्याभिरादृताः । ततः प्रसन्नो भगवान्किंकरोमीति चाब्रवीत्
All the gods praised him with sincere and respectful words; then the blessed Lord, pleased, said, 'What shall I do?'
ततो निवेदयांचक्रुः ब्रह्मणे विबुधाः पुनः । जालंधरस्य सकलं तथा निजपराभवम्
Then the gods again reported to Brahma the entire matter of Jalandhara, including his own defeat and that of others.
क्षणं ध्यात्वा ययौ ब्रह्मा कैलासं त्रिदशैः सह । तस्य शैलस्य पार्श्वे ते वैचित्र्येण समाकुलाः । स्थिताः संतुष्टुवुर्देवा ब्रह्मशक्रपुरोगमाः
After meditating for a moment, Brahma went to Kailasa with the gods; at the side of that mountain, filled with wondrous sights, the gods led by Brahma and Indra stood and praised him.
नमो भवाय शर्वाय नीलग्रीवाय ते नमः । नमः स्थूलाय सूक्ष्माय बहुरूपाय ते नमः
Salutations to Bhava, to Sharva, to you with the blue throat; salutations to you who are gross and subtle, who take many forms.
इति सर्वमुखो भूत्वा वाणीमाकर्ण्य शंकरः । प्रोवाच नंदिनं देवा नानयस्वेति सत्वरम्
Thus, having become all-faced, Shankara, hearing their words, said quickly to Nandi, 'Bring the gods here.'
श्रुत्वा शंभोर्वचो देवा आहूता नंदिना द्रुतम् । प्रविश्यांतःपुरे देवा ददृशुर्विस्मितेक्षणाः
Hearing Shambhu's command, the gods, summoned swiftly by Nandi, entered the inner palace and gazed with astonished eyes.
तत्रासने समासीनं शंकरं लोकशंकरम् । गणैः कोटिसहस्रैस्तु सेवितं भक्तिशालिभिः
There they saw Shankara, the benefactor of the worlds, seated on a throne, attended by countless millions of devoted followers.
नग्नैर्विरूपैः कुटिलैर्जटिलैर्धूलिधूसरैः । प्रणिपत्याग्रतः प्राह सह देवैः पितामहः
By naked, deformed, crooked, matted-haired, dust-covered beings, Brahma, along with the gods, bowed before him and spoke.
सुखरोगो यथा स्यासीच्छक्रः सोऽयं वृथागतः । कृपां कुरु महादेव शरणागतवत्सल
Just as a healthy person should not become sick, so this Indra has come in vain; show compassion, O great god, protector of those who seek refuge.
