पलायध्वं सुराः सर्वे द्रोणाद्रिः क्षयमागतः । एवमुक्तवतस्तस्य गुरोश्चिच्छेद सिंधुजः
Flee, O gods, all of you! Droṇa mountain is nearing destruction; as he spoke thus, the river-born cut off his teacher's thread.
यज्ञोपवीतं केशांश्च बाणैस्तीक्ष्णैर्हसन्सुरान् । ततो दुद्राव वेगेन गुरुः प्राणभयार्दितः
Laughing, he severed the sacred thread and locks of hair of the gods with sharp arrows; then the teacher fled swiftly, afflicted by fear for his life.
देवाः सर्वे रणं हित्वा पलायांचक्रिरे नृप । एवं विद्राव्य देवान्वै जनार्द्दनमधावत
All the gods abandoned the battle and fled, O king; thus, having routed the gods, he rushed toward Janārddana.
हृषीकेशोऽपि दैत्येशमन्वधावद्रणोत्सुकः । ततो युद्धमभूद्धोरं विष्णोर्जालंधरस्य च
Hṛṣīkeśa, eager for battle, pursued the lord of the demons; then a fierce fight arose between Viṣṇu and Jālaṃdhara.
दुर्द्धर्षणो बाणजालैः प्लावयामास केशवम् । तान्बाणान्खंडशः कृत्वा पूरयित्वा शरैर्महान्
Difficult to withstand, he flooded Keśava with streams of arrows; breaking those arrows into pieces, he filled the sky with great shafts.
वासुदेवोसुरं बाणैर्जालंधरमपीडयत् । जालंधरो रथं त्यक्त्वा शरपीडितविग्रहः
Vāsudeva afflicted the demon Jālaṃdhara with arrows; Jālaṃdhara, abandoning his chariot, his body tormented by arrows,
विष्णुं विजेतुं दुद्राव संयतिस्थमथ द्रुतम् । तमायांतं रणे दृष्ट्वा हरिर्विव्याध सायकैः
Ran swiftly to defeat Viṣṇu, who stood in battle; seeing him approaching in the fight, Hari struck him with arrows.
बाणानंगेसहद्विष्णोः प्राप्तोऽसौ रथसंनिधौ । हस्तेनैकेन गरुडं द्वितीयेन रथं हरेः
Having reached the proximity of Viṣṇu's chariot, with arrows attached to his body, he seized Garuḍa with one hand and Hari's chariot with the other.
भ्रामयित्वांबरे शश्वत्श्वेतद्वीपे न्यपातयत् । जालंधरकरक्षिप्तो गरुडोऽपि पपात ह
Spinning them constantly in the sky, he cast them down upon the Śvetadvīpa; Garuḍa, hurled by Jālaṃdhara's hand, also fell.
क्रौंचद्वीपे स तत्रैव विश्राममकरोच्चिरम् । अच्युतः प्रच्युतस्तस्माद्भ्रमतो रथमंडलात्
There, on Krauñcadvīpa, he rested for a long time; Acyuta was thrown from the whirling circle of the chariot.
रणमागत्य दैत्येशं तिष्ठतिष्ठेत्यभाषत । दृष्ट्वा तमागतं भूयः केशवं समरप्रियः
Coming to the battlefield, he addressed the lord of demons, 'Stand, stand!'; seeing Keśava approaching again, eager for battle,
पूरयन्मार्गणैर्भूमिं जगर्जार्णवनंदनः
The son of the river roared, filling the earth with arrows.
विव्याध दैत्यं हरिराशु शक्त्या हृदि स्फुरंत्या स ततः पपात । सूतो न यत्तं समरान्निवासं तं प्राह रे केन कृतोस्म्यलज्जः
Hari swiftly struck the demon with a spear flashing in his heart, and he fell; the charioteer, unable to keep him in the battle, said, 'O, by whom have I been made shameless?'
दैत्यारि जालंधरयोर्महत्तदा बभूव युद्धं धरणीतलस्थयोः । प्रेम्णा श्रियस्तं न जघान दानवं स्वयं हरिस्तस्य शरैः पपात
A great battle took place then between the enemy of demons and Jālaṃdhara, both standing upon the earth; out of love, Śrī did not slay the demon, and Hari himself fell by his arrows.
ततो निरीक्ष्य गोविंदं पतितं धरणीतले । प्रगृह्यार्णवजो दैत्य आरुरोह निजं रथम् । ततस्तमिंदिरा प्राप्ता रुदंती विष्णुवल्लभा
Then, seeing Govinda fallen upon the earth, the son of the ocean seized him, and the demon mounted his own chariot. At that moment, the beloved of Vishnu, Lakshmi, arrived there, weeping.
संस्थिता कमला तत्र पतिं कमललोचनम् । पतितं तु पतिं वीक्ष्य लक्ष्मीः प्राहार्णवात्मजम्
There, Kamala stood before her husband, the lotus-eyed one. Seeing her husband fallen, Lakshmi spoke to the son of the ocean.
शृणुष्व वचनं भ्रातर्जितो विष्णुर्धृतस्त्वया । भगिन्या न च वैधव्यं दातुं युक्तं महाबल
"Hear my words, brother: you have conquered and captured Vishnu. But, O mighty one, it is not fitting to make your sister a widow."
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्या मुमोच जगतः पतिम् । जालंधरो महाबाहुः स्वस्रे भक्त्या ननाम च
Hearing her words, Jalandhara, the mighty-armed, released the Lord of the worlds and bowed to his sister with devotion.
ववंदे चरणौ विष्णोः स्वसुः स्नेहात्तदांजसा । विष्णुर्जालंधरं प्राह तुष्टोऽस्मि तव कर्मणा । वरं वरय दैत्येश किं प्रयच्छामि ते वरम्
Out of affection for his sister, he at once bowed to the feet of Vishnu. Vishnu said to Jalandhara, "I am pleased with your deed. Ask a boon, lord of the Daityas—what blessing shall I grant you?"
जालंधर उवाच-। यदि त्वं मम तुष्टोऽसि शौर्येणानेन केशव । स्थातव्यं मत्पितुः स्थाने त्वया कमलया सह
Jalandhara said: "If you are pleased with my valor, O Keshava, then you must dwell in my father's abode together with Kamala."
तथेत्युक्त्वा च संस्मृत्य गरुडं धरणीधरः । आरुह्य च जगन्नाथः क्षीराब्धिं प्रियया सह
Saying "So be it," the Lord of the earth remembered Garuda, mounted him, and, together with his beloved, went to the ocean of milk.
तदाप्रभृति कृष्णस्य वासः श्वशुरमंदिरे । अब्धौ वसति देवेशो लक्ष्म्याः प्रियचिकीर्षया
From that time onward, Krishna resided in his father-in-law's palace; the Lord of the gods dwells in the ocean, wishing to please Lakshmi.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच- देवान्विक्लाव्य समरे विष्णुं स्थाप्यात्ममंदिरे । जालंधरेणाब्धिजेन यत्कृतं ब्रूहि नारद
Yudhishthira said: "O Narada, tell me what Jalandhara, the son of the ocean, did after defeating the gods in battle and placing Vishnu in his own house."
नारद उवाच-। शुंभादीनां तु वीराणां दत्त्वा दानं प्रसादजम् । जालंधरो जगामाथ स्वर्गं प्राप्यावलोकयत्
Narada said: "After giving gifts to the heroic Shumbha and others, born of his favor, Jalandhara went to heaven and beheld it."
हिरण्यवर्षेण जनान्भूषयंतं दिनेदिने । फलंति तरवोऽजस्रं वाजिमेधक्रतोः फलम्
He adorned people daily with showers of golden wealth; the trees bore fruit endlessly, as if yielding the fruit of a horse sacrifice.
गजवस्त्रसुवर्णानि धेनु कन्या तिलानि च । पुष्पकर्पूरतांबूल कस्तूरी कुंकुमानि च
Elephants, garments, gold, cows, maidens, and sesame seeds, as well as flowers, camphor, betel, musk, and saffron—
ये यच्छंति महात्मानस्ते पश्यंत्यमरावतीम् । वर्षासु गृहदानेन शिशिरेऽग्निप्रदानतः
Those great souls who give these things see Amaravati; in the rainy season by giving houses, in winter by giving fire—
वादित्राणि च सर्वाणि वादयंति शिवालये । प्रपां कुर्वंति ये चैत्रे दध्योदनसमन्विताम्
All kinds of musical instruments are played in Shiva's temple; those who build wells in the month of Chaitra, filled with curd and rice—
यत्र हिंदोलपर्यंकं स्वयमांदोलयंति च । सारिकाशुकहंसाश्च भ्रमद्भ्रमरकोकिलाः
There, swings and cradles are rocked by themselves; parrots, mynas, swans, bees, and cuckoos wander about.
कुर्वंतो दूतकार्याणि यच्छंते प्रियसंगमम् । रंभा यत्र पुरे राम मेनका च तिलोत्तमा
Messengers carry out their tasks, and beloved meetings take place; in that city dwell Rambha, Rama, Menaka, and Tilottama.
