इति दैत्योक्तमाकर्ण्य शुक्रः प्राहार्णवात्मजम् । क्षीरसागरमध्यस्थो द्रोणोनाम महागिरिः
Hearing these words of the demon, Śukra replied to the son of the ocean: 'In the midst of the Milk Ocean stands a great mountain named Droṇa.'
औषध्यस्तत्र तिष्ठंति जीवयंति च या मृतान् । तत्र गत्वा सुराचार्यो गृहीत्वोषधिसंचयम्
There, medicinal herbs grow that restore the dead to life; going there, the teacher of the gods gathered a collection of those herbs.
रणे विनिहतान्देवानुत्थापयति मंत्रतः । भार्गवोक्तमथाकर्ण्य सैन्यभारं महाबलः
With those, he brings back to life by mantra the gods who have fallen in battle; hearing Bhārgava's words, the mighty one, bearing the army's burden,
शुंभे निक्षिप्य तरसा ययौ जालंधरोऽर्णवम् । अथ प्रविष्टः क्षीराब्धौ वेश्मदिव्यं महाप्रभम्
Swiftly placing the army with Śumbha, Jālandhara went to the ocean; then, entering the Milk Ocean, he beheld a wondrous, divine palace.
प्रविश्य तत्र क्षीराब्धेः क्रीडास्थानं ददर्श सः । नोष्णो न शीतलो वायुर्न तमो यत्र दृश्यते
Entering there, he saw the play-hall of the Milk Ocean, where neither heat nor cold nor darkness is seen.
यत्र गायंति नृत्यंति क्रीडंति च वरस्त्रियः । सुपीनस्तनभाराढ्याः कृशोदर्यः सुदंतिकाः 6.7.
There, noble women sing, dance, and play—full-bosomed, slender-waisted, and with beautiful teeth.
नेत्रविभ्रमविक्षेपैर्नितंबपरिवर्त्तनैः । अंगैः संमोहनै रम्यैर्बाहुवल्लीविचालनैः
With sidelong glances, shifting eyes, swaying hips, enchanting limbs, and graceful movements of their vine-like arms,
पादविन्यासरणि तैर्मधुरैर्वचनस्तवैः । सौगंध्यसौख्यदैर्वासैर्नेत्रभ्रमरहुंकृतैः
With intricate steps, sweet words of praise, fragrant and pleasing garments, and the humming of bees at their eyes,
चामरांदोललीलाभिः स्रग्भिः स्मितविलोकितैः। सेवां चक्रुर्विलासिन्यस्तत्र सुतः
With playful waving of fans, garlands, and smiling glances, those charming women rendered service there.
क्रीडंतं तत्र दुग्धाब्धिं संवीक्ष्य समरोत्सुकः। अथाह प्रणिपत्यासौ क्षीराब्धिं तात हंसि माम्। द्रोणाचलौषधीर्व्याजादंबुभिः प्लावयस्वतः
Seeing the Milk Ocean sporting there, eager for battle, he bowed and said: 'O Milk Ocean, father, grant me passage—flood the Droṇa mountain herbs with water as a pretext.'
क्षीरसागर उवाच-। तं प्राप्तं शरणं पुत्र प्लावयाम्यूर्मिभिः कथम् । मुनींद्रास्तं न शंसंति यस्त्यजेच्छरणागतम्
The Milk Ocean said: 'My son, you have come to me for refuge—how can I not flood you with my waves? The great sages do not praise one who abandons a supplicant.'
पितृव्यवचनं श्रुत्वा संक्रोधात्संततं गिरिम् । तलप्रहरणेनैव ताडयामास दैत्यराट्
Hearing his uncle's words, the king of the demons, in anger, struck the mountain repeatedly with the flat of his hand.
ततो द्रोणगिरी राजन्भीतो जालंधराद्भृशम् । अथाजगाम रूपेण प्राह जालंधरं प्रति
Then, O King, the Droṇa mountain, greatly afraid of Jālandhara, appeared in person and spoke to him directly.
तवाहमभवं दासो रक्ष मां शरणागतम् । रसातलं महाबाहो यास्यामि तव शासनात्
'I have become your servant; protect me, for I have sought your refuge. O mighty-armed one, at your command I will go to the netherworld.'
यावत्त्वं कुरुषे राज्यं तावत्स्थास्याम्यहं प्रभो । ओषधीनां विरावेण सिद्धानां रोदनेन च
'As long as you rule, O lord, I shall remain; at the sound of the herbs and the cries of the Siddhas,'
रसातलं जगामाद्रिः सिंधुसूनोः प्रपश्यतः । ततो जालंधरो वीर आजगाम महारणम्
The mountain went to the netherworld as the son of the ocean looked on; then the hero Jālandhara returned to the great battle.
पूर्वकल्पितमारुह्य रथस्थं केशवं ययौ । रथस्थं माधवं दृष्ट्वा जहासोच्चैर्नदीसुतः
Mounting the previously prepared chariot, Keśava departed; seeing Mādhava upon the chariot, the river's son laughed aloud.
तावत्त्वं तिष्ठ शकटे यावद्धन्यामरीनहम् । एवमुक्त्वा जघानाशु शरैस्तां देववाहिनीम्
Stay in the cart for now, until I defeat the immortals; having spoken thus, he swiftly struck the divine army with arrows.
बाणैर्विदारिता देवास्त्राहीत्यूचुर्बृहस्पतिम् । ततो बृहस्पतिः शीघ्रमगमत्क्षीरसागरम्
Pierced by arrows, the gods cried out to Bṛhaspati for help; then Bṛhaspati quickly went to the ocean of milk.
अदृष्ट्वा तं ततो द्रोणमभूच्चिन्तापरो नृप । अथागत्य रणं तूर्णममरान्प्राह गीष्पतिः
Not seeing him, Droṇa became absorbed in thought, O king; then, arriving swiftly at the battle, the lord of speech addressed the gods.
पलायध्वं सुराः सर्वे द्रोणाद्रिः क्षयमागतः । एवमुक्तवतस्तस्य गुरोश्चिच्छेद सिंधुजः
Flee, O gods, all of you! Droṇa mountain is nearing destruction; as he spoke thus, the river-born cut off his teacher's thread.
यज्ञोपवीतं केशांश्च बाणैस्तीक्ष्णैर्हसन्सुरान् । ततो दुद्राव वेगेन गुरुः प्राणभयार्दितः
Laughing, he severed the sacred thread and locks of hair of the gods with sharp arrows; then the teacher fled swiftly, afflicted by fear for his life.
देवाः सर्वे रणं हित्वा पलायांचक्रिरे नृप । एवं विद्राव्य देवान्वै जनार्द्दनमधावत
All the gods abandoned the battle and fled, O king; thus, having routed the gods, he rushed toward Janārddana.
हृषीकेशोऽपि दैत्येशमन्वधावद्रणोत्सुकः । ततो युद्धमभूद्धोरं विष्णोर्जालंधरस्य च
Hṛṣīkeśa, eager for battle, pursued the lord of the demons; then a fierce fight arose between Viṣṇu and Jālaṃdhara.
दुर्द्धर्षणो बाणजालैः प्लावयामास केशवम् । तान्बाणान्खंडशः कृत्वा पूरयित्वा शरैर्महान्
Difficult to withstand, he flooded Keśava with streams of arrows; breaking those arrows into pieces, he filled the sky with great shafts.
वासुदेवोसुरं बाणैर्जालंधरमपीडयत् । जालंधरो रथं त्यक्त्वा शरपीडितविग्रहः
Vāsudeva afflicted the demon Jālaṃdhara with arrows; Jālaṃdhara, abandoning his chariot, his body tormented by arrows,
विष्णुं विजेतुं दुद्राव संयतिस्थमथ द्रुतम् । तमायांतं रणे दृष्ट्वा हरिर्विव्याध सायकैः
Ran swiftly to defeat Viṣṇu, who stood in battle; seeing him approaching in the fight, Hari struck him with arrows.
बाणानंगेसहद्विष्णोः प्राप्तोऽसौ रथसंनिधौ । हस्तेनैकेन गरुडं द्वितीयेन रथं हरेः
Having reached the proximity of Viṣṇu's chariot, with arrows attached to his body, he seized Garuḍa with one hand and Hari's chariot with the other.
भ्रामयित्वांबरे शश्वत्श्वेतद्वीपे न्यपातयत् । जालंधरकरक्षिप्तो गरुडोऽपि पपात ह
Spinning them constantly in the sky, he cast them down upon the Śvetadvīpa; Garuḍa, hurled by Jālaṃdhara's hand, also fell.
क्रौंचद्वीपे स तत्रैव विश्राममकरोच्चिरम् । अच्युतः प्रच्युतस्तस्माद्भ्रमतो रथमंडलात्
There, on Krauñcadvīpa, he rested for a long time; Acyuta was thrown from the whirling circle of the chariot.
