निःशंकं जहि मां विष्णो नाहं त्वा हन्मि माधव । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः
Strike me without hesitation, O Vishnu; I will not strike you, O Madhava. Hearing these words, his eyes reddened with anger.
नारायणः प्राणहरैः शरैरेनमपूरयत् । विष्णुना च विभिन्नांगोऽर्णवसूनुः प्रतापवान्
Narayana filled him with arrows that take away life; and the powerful son of the ocean was wounded by Vishnu.
हरिं संपूरयामास मार्गणौघैर्निरंतरम् । नारायणः प्राणहरैः शरैरेनमपूरयत्
He filled Hari with a continuous stream of arrows; Narayana filled him with arrows that take away life.
गरुडं पतितं दृष्ट्वासिंधुसूनोः शरैर्भुवि । रथं संस्मारयामास वैकुंठस्थं जनार्दनः
Seeing Garuda fallen to the ground by the arrows of the ocean's son, Janardana, dwelling in Vaikuntha, recalled his chariot.
सरथस्तस्य संप्राप्तः सूतहीनो हयैर्वृतः । अश्वैर्युतं रथं दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो भगवान्रणे
His chariot arrived, drawn by horses but without a charioteer; seeing the chariot yoked with horses, the Blessed One was amazed in battle.
संबोधयित्वा गरुडं सारथ्ये समयोजयत् । स धृत्वा मुकुटं मूर्ध्नि कौस्तुभं हृदये मणिम्
After reviving Garuda, he appointed him as charioteer; he placed the crown on his head and the Kaustubha gem on his heart.
पुरुषार्थान्हयान्कृत्वा ययौ जालंधरं हरिः । मेदिनीं रथचक्रेण दारयंश्च सुरैः सह
Making the horses embodiments of human purpose, Hari went toward Jalandhara, tearing the earth with the chariot wheels, accompanied by the gods.
जघान तरसा बाणैर्दानवानां च वाहिनीम् । देवराजेन संदिष्टो वीतिहोत्रो रणांगणे
He struck down the army of the demons with arrows swiftly; Vītihotra, instructed by the king of the gods, fought in the battlefield.
ददाह दानवानीकं समीरणसमन्वितम् । तदाह तं भगवता दैत्यसैन्यं सुरैः सह
He burned the demon troops, joined with the wind; at that time, the Blessed One spoke to the demon army along with the gods.
जालंधरः स्वल्पशेषं दध्यौ दृष्ट्वा बलं स्वकम् । अथाह भार्गवं राजा मत्सैन्यं निहतं सुरैः
Jalandhara, seeing his own force reduced to a small remnant, then spoke to Bhargava, 'My army has been destroyed by the gods.'
त्वयि तिष्ठति मंत्रज्ञे विख्यातो विद्यया भवान् । किं तया विद्यया ब्रह्मन्क्षत्रेणाथ बलेन च
While you remain, knower of mantras, you are renowned for your knowledge; what use is that knowledge, O Brahman, or even power and strength?
या न रक्षति रोगार्तान्यद्बलं शरणागतान् । जालंधरवचः श्रुत्वा भार्गवस्तमभाषत
That which does not protect those afflicted by disease, or those who have sought refuge, what is the use of such strength? Hearing Jalandhara's words, Bhargava spoke to him.
पश्य राजन्मम बलं ब्राह्मणस्य रणांगणे । इत्युक्त्वा वारिणा स्पृष्टा हुंकारेण प्रबोधिताः
See, O king, my strength as a Brahmin in the battlefield. Having said this, he touched them with water and awakened them with a shout.
उत्थापितास्ते कविना शरौघैः प्राणहारकैः । देवाहता रणे पेतुः समंतात्सिंधुसूनुना
Those revived by the sage rose up, and with showers of arrows that take away life, struck down by the gods in battle, they fell together with the ocean's son.
बाणैर्जर्जरदेहास्ते धृतप्राणा नराधिप । न मृतास्त्वमरत्वाच्च बाणैर्भिन्नाश्च सत्तम
Their bodies were shattered by arrows, yet they held onto life, O king; they did not die, for they were immortal, though pierced by arrows, O noble one.
ततो नारायणो देवो बृहस्पतिमभाषत । धिग्बलं दैवतगुरो यो न जीवयसे सुरान्
Then the god Narayana spoke to Brihaspati: 'Fie upon strength, O teacher of the gods, since you do not revive the gods.'
धिषणस्तु जगन्नाथमुवाच त्वरितं तदा । ओषधीभिरहं स्वामिन्जीवयिष्यामि निर्जरान्
Dhiṣaṇa quickly spoke to the Lord of the universe: 'Master, I will revive the immortals with herbs.'
इत्युक्त्वा धिषणः सोऽपि ययौ क्षीरार्णवस्थितम् । द्रोणमद्रिं तदा गत्वा सुखं गृह्यौषधीः स्वयम्
Having said this, Dhiṣaṇa went to the place where the milk ocean is; then, going to Mount Drona, he himself happily gathered the herbs.
गुरुस्तासां च योगेन जीवयामास निर्जरान् । उत्थितास्ते ततो देवा जघ्नुर्दानववाहिनीम्
By his yogic power, their teacher revived the immortals; then, having arisen, the gods struck down the army of the Dānavas.
देवान्समुत्थितान्दृष्ट्वा बभाषे सिंधुजः कविम् । विना त्वद्विद्यया काव्य कथमेते समुत्थिताः
Seeing the gods restored, the son of the ocean spoke to the sage: 'O Kāvya, without your knowledge, how have these ones arisen?
इति दैत्योक्तमाकर्ण्य शुक्रः प्राहार्णवात्मजम् । क्षीरसागरमध्यस्थो द्रोणोनाम महागिरिः
Hearing these words of the demon, Śukra replied to the son of the ocean: 'In the midst of the Milk Ocean stands a great mountain named Droṇa.'
औषध्यस्तत्र तिष्ठंति जीवयंति च या मृतान् । तत्र गत्वा सुराचार्यो गृहीत्वोषधिसंचयम्
There, medicinal herbs grow that restore the dead to life; going there, the teacher of the gods gathered a collection of those herbs.
रणे विनिहतान्देवानुत्थापयति मंत्रतः । भार्गवोक्तमथाकर्ण्य सैन्यभारं महाबलः
With those, he brings back to life by mantra the gods who have fallen in battle; hearing Bhārgava's words, the mighty one, bearing the army's burden,
शुंभे निक्षिप्य तरसा ययौ जालंधरोऽर्णवम् । अथ प्रविष्टः क्षीराब्धौ वेश्मदिव्यं महाप्रभम्
Swiftly placing the army with Śumbha, Jālandhara went to the ocean; then, entering the Milk Ocean, he beheld a wondrous, divine palace.
प्रविश्य तत्र क्षीराब्धेः क्रीडास्थानं ददर्श सः । नोष्णो न शीतलो वायुर्न तमो यत्र दृश्यते
Entering there, he saw the play-hall of the Milk Ocean, where neither heat nor cold nor darkness is seen.
यत्र गायंति नृत्यंति क्रीडंति च वरस्त्रियः । सुपीनस्तनभाराढ्याः कृशोदर्यः सुदंतिकाः 6.7.
There, noble women sing, dance, and play—full-bosomed, slender-waisted, and with beautiful teeth.
नेत्रविभ्रमविक्षेपैर्नितंबपरिवर्त्तनैः । अंगैः संमोहनै रम्यैर्बाहुवल्लीविचालनैः
With sidelong glances, shifting eyes, swaying hips, enchanting limbs, and graceful movements of their vine-like arms,
पादविन्यासरणि तैर्मधुरैर्वचनस्तवैः । सौगंध्यसौख्यदैर्वासैर्नेत्रभ्रमरहुंकृतैः
With intricate steps, sweet words of praise, fragrant and pleasing garments, and the humming of bees at their eyes,
चामरांदोललीलाभिः स्रग्भिः स्मितविलोकितैः। सेवां चक्रुर्विलासिन्यस्तत्र सुतः
With playful waving of fans, garlands, and smiling glances, those charming women rendered service there.
क्रीडंतं तत्र दुग्धाब्धिं संवीक्ष्य समरोत्सुकः। अथाह प्रणिपत्यासौ क्षीराब्धिं तात हंसि माम्। द्रोणाचलौषधीर्व्याजादंबुभिः प्लावयस्वतः
Seeing the Milk Ocean sporting there, eager for battle, he bowed and said: 'O Milk Ocean, father, grant me passage—flood the Droṇa mountain herbs with water as a pretext.'
