तामुद्ग्रथय वैधव्यदुःखार्त्तायाः स्वयं प्रिय । एवं विलपतीं वीक्ष्य बलराज्ञीं समुद्रजः । दुःखितः शुक्रमित्याह बलं जीवय भार्गव
"Untie it yourself now, beloved, for one afflicted by the sorrow of widowhood." Seeing the queen of Bala lamenting thus, the Ocean-born, distressed, said to Shukra, "Revive Bala, Bhargava."
शुक्र उवाच-। इच्छयामरणं प्राप्तं तं कथं जीवयाम्यहम् । तथापि मंत्रसामर्थ्याद्वाचमुच्चारयिष्यति
Shukra said: "He has attained death by his own will—how can I bring him back to life? Still, by the power of mantra, he will utter a speech."
जालंधर उवाच-। बलस्य रूप वचनं श्रोतुमिच्छामि भार्गव । जालंधरेणैवमुक्तः क्षणं ध्यानपरोऽभवत्
Jalandhara said: "Bhargava, I wish to hear Bala's form and words." Thus addressed by Jalandhara, Shukra became absorbed in meditation for a moment.
अथोदतिष्ठद्वदनात्स्वनः श्रोत्रमनोरमः । प्रभावतीं प्रति व्यक्तं वाद्यभांडा दिवोत्थितः
Then, from Bala's mouth arose a melodious sound, delightful to the ear; for Prabhavati, clear as the music of celestial instruments.
प्रभावति स्वदेहं त्वं ममांगेषु लयं नय । इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा नदी जाता प्रभावती
"Prabhavati, merge your own body into my limbs." Hearing these words, Prabhavati became a river.
बलाङ्गेष्वेव लीना सा सुमेरोः पूर्ववाहिनी । यस्यास्तोयेन संजाता रत्नानां कांतिरुत्तमा
She merged into Bala's limbs, flowing east of Mount Sumeru; by her waters, the brilliance of jewels became supreme.
नारद उवाच- ततो जालंधरः क्रुद्धः प्राह तं दैत्यसूदनम् । कपटेन बलं हत्वा क्व यास्यसि बलाधम
Narada said: Then Jalandhara, enraged, spoke to the slayer of Daityas: "Having slain Bala by deceit, where will you go, O lowest of the strong?"
इत्युक्त्वा तं शतमखं सिंधुसूनुः प्रतापवान् । ससूताश्वध्वजरथं छादयामास मार्गणैः
Having said this, the powerful son of the Ocean covered Shatakratu, along with his charioteer, horses, banner, and chariot, with arrows.
पपात मूर्च्छितः शक्रो रथोपरि शरैः क्षतः । दृष्ट्वा तं पतितं शक्रं जगर्जार्णवनंदनः
Struck by arrows, Shakra fell unconscious onto his chariot; seeing Shakra fallen, the delight of the ocean roared.
मूर्च्छां त्यक्त्वा मुमोचेंद्रो वज्रं जालंधरं प्रति । तदाद्रिदलनं हस्ते गृहीत्वा सिंधुसंभवः
Regaining consciousness, Indra hurled the thunderbolt at Jalandhara; the ocean-born seized the mountain-breaking weapon in his hand.
वज्रं कक्षापुटे धृत्वा रथादुत्तीर्य सत्वरम् । अभ्यधावत दैत्येंद्रो देवेंद्रं धर्तुमाहवे
Holding the thunderbolt in his armpit, he swiftly descended from the chariot and rushed to seize Indra, lord of the gods, in battle.
ततो दुद्राव मघवा रथं त्यक्त्वा हरिं स्मरन् । रथमिंद्रस्य मदवानारुह्यार्णवनंदनः
Then Maghavan fled, abandoning his chariot, remembering Hari; and the ocean's delight, intoxicated with power, mounted Indra's chariot.
यंतारं मातलिं कृत्वा ययौ प्राप्तमनोरथः । रथमिंद्रस्य तरसा यत्र यत्र ययौ बले
Having made Mātali his charioteer, he set out, his wish fulfilled, and wherever Bali went, he swiftly followed in Indra’s chariot.
जालंधरो महाबाहुः स्वयं चांबुधरो यथा । ततः स कोपात्पुरुषोत्तमः स्वयं खड्गं समुद्यम्य च नंदकं रणे
Jālandhara, mighty-armed, stood like a rain-cloud; then, Purushottama, enraged, himself raised his sword Nandaka in battle.
संप्रेरयित्वा गरुडं मनोजवं जघान कोपेन च दैत्यवाहिनीम् । रथान्हयान्कुंजरपत्तिसंघान्स पातयामास बलात्सहस्रशः
Having sent forth Garuḍa, swift as the mind, he struck down the demon army in anger; by force, he felled thousands of chariots, horses, elephants, and battalions of foot-soldiers.
जनार्दनः कश्यपसूनुसंवृतश्चकार संख्ये चरितं भयावहम् । केशास्थिमज्जारुधिरौघवाहिनीं पिशाचवेतालविहंगसेविताम्
Janārdana, surrounded by the sons of Kaśyapa, performed in battle a deed that inspired terror: a river of hair, bone, marrow, and streams of blood, haunted by ghosts, ghouls, and birds of prey.
करोरुजंघायुधशस्त्रपूरितां सुदुस्तरां व्याघ्रगजेंद्र सेविताम् । रक्तांत्रहारांगदभूषितांतां विघूर्णनेत्रोत्सवकांतिवाससम्
Filled with arms, thighs, legs, weapons, and missiles, that river was nearly impossible to cross, frequented by tigers and lordly elephants, adorned with garlands of bloody entrails and armlets, its waves the rolling eyes of the slain.
विष्णुना निहतं सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा दानवपुंगवाः । जालंधराज्ञया सर्वे रुरुधुः परितो हरिम्
Seeing their army slain by Viṣṇu, the foremost of the Dānavas, by Jālandhara’s command, all surrounded Hari and wailed on every side.
दैत्यास्ते तत्र बाणौघान्वर्षमाणा यथांबुदाः । यथाद्विरेफाः कमलं पर्वतं जलदा इव
There, the demons rained volleys of arrows like clouds, as bees swarm a lotus, or as mountains are enveloped by clouds.
चूतं यथा पक्षिगणा गगनं धूपसंचयः । न दृश्योऽभूत्तदा विष्णुर्न तार्क्ष्यो रणसंकटे
As flocks of birds obscure a mango tree, as clouds gather in the sky, so at that moment neither Viṣṇu nor Garuḍa could be seen in the turmoil of battle.
सर्वे ते रथमारूढा सर्वशस्त्रैर्महासुराः । वैकुंठाधिपतिं जघ्नुर्गर्जंतो भीमनिस्वनैः
All those great demons mounted their chariots, armed with every weapon, and attacked the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, roaring with terrifying cries.
तान्सर्वान्भीमरूपेण दैत्यारिः कुपितस्तदा । रणे निपातयामास वायुः पर्णचयं यथा
Then, the enemy of the demons, enraged and in a fearsome form, struck them all down in battle, as the wind scatters heaps of leaves.
शैलरोमा ततो विष्णुं दैत्यः कोपादधावत । हरेरपि शरास्तस्य शरीरे शीर्णतां गताः
Then Śailaromā, the demon, rushed at Viṣṇu in anger; even Hari’s arrows, shot at him, fell away from his body.
शैलरोमा च दैत्यारि शरीरं चाहनच्छरैः । हरिः खड्गं विनिर्धूय शिरस्तस्य जहार ह
Śailaromā, O enemy of demons, struck Hari’s body with arrows; but Hari, shaking his sword, severed Śailaromā’s head.
छिन्ने शिरसि दैत्यस्य कबंधो विक्रमन्रणे । शैलरोमा भुजाभ्यां च तार्क्ष्यं जग्राह पक्षयोः
When the demon’s head was cut off, the headless trunk, still fighting in battle, seized Garuḍa by the wings with both arms.
शिरश्चोत्पत्य तरसा विलग्नं स्कंधयोर्दृढम् । ततस्तत्रास्ययुद्धेन हृषीकेशोऽपि विस्मितः
The head, leaping up with force, clung tightly to Garuḍa’s shoulders; then, in that contest, Hṛṣīkeśa himself was astonished.
शिरः संलग्नमालोक्य गरुडो न्यपतद्भुवि । पुनश्चोत्पत्य वेगेन शिरःस्थानं समाश्रयत्
Seeing the head attached, Garuḍa fell to the ground; then, rising swiftly, he again took his place at the head’s location.
शैलरोमा ततो विष्णुं जहार गरुडाद्बली । हरिर्जघ्ने तलेनाशु गतायुश्चापतद्भुवि
Then Śailaromā, powerful, seized Viṣṇu from Garuḍa; but Hari struck him swiftly with his palm, and as his life departed, he fell to the earth.
ततो जालंधरः सूतं खड्गरोमाणमब्रवीत् । संप्रेषय रथं तत्र यत्र देवो जनार्दनः
Then Jālandhara said to his charioteer, Khaḍgaroman: ‘Bring the chariot there, where the god Janārdana is.’
जालंधरस्य वचनात्खङ्गरोमानयद्रथम् । दृष्ट्वा तं पुरतो विष्णुमुवाचार्णवनंदनः
At Jālandhara’s command, Khaṅgaroman brought the chariot; seeing Viṣṇu before him, the son of Arṇava spoke.
