ततो जनार्दनः क्रुद्धो निर्ययौ कालनेमिनम् । यमो दुर्वारणं वीरं स्वर्भानुश्चंद्रभास्करौ
Then Janardana, enraged, advanced against Kalanemi, and Yama, the unconquerable hero, along with Svarbhanu, the Moon, and the Sun.
केतुं वैश्वानरो देवो ययौ शुक्रं बृहस्पतिः । आश्विनौ संयतौ तत्र दैत्यमंगारपर्णकम्
Ketu, the fiery god, went forth; Shukra and Brihaspati as well. The Ashvins joined in battle against the demon Angaraparnaka.
संह्रादं शक्रपुत्रश्च निर्ह्रादं धनदो ययौ । निशुंभश्चावृतो रुद्रैः शुंभो वसुभिराहवे
Samhrada was confronted by Indra's son, and Nirhrada by Kubera; Nishumbha, surrounded by Rudras, and Shumbha by Vasus in the conflict.
मेघाकारं स्थितं जंभं विश्वेदेवाः समाययौ । वायवो वज्ररोमाणमथ मृत्युर्मयं ययौ
The Visvedevas attacked Jambha, who stood like a cloud; the Vayu gods went against Vajraroma, and Mrityu fought with Maya.
नमुचिं वासवो व्यग्रं शक्तिहस्तोऽभ्यधावत । अन्यैरपि सुरैर्दैत्याः स्वस्ववीर्यसमैर्वृताः
Vasava rushed at Namuci, armed with a spear; other gods and demons also engaged, each surrounded by warriors of equal strength.
नारदउवाच- एवं द्वंद्वेषु युद्धेषु संप्रवृत्तेष्वनेकशः । जघानाथ हरिः क्रुद्धो गदया कालनेमिनम्
Narada said: Thus, as many duels broke out in battle, Hari, enraged, struck Kalanemi with his mace.
विहाय मूर्च्छां संचित्य विष्णुं बाणैर्जघान सः । ततः क्रुद्धेन हरिणा स क्षितौ पातितो व्यसुः
Recovering from faintness, he attacked Vishnu with arrows; then, enraged, Hari cast him down to the earth, lifeless.
राजन्जघान संचिंत्य राहुं खड्गेन चंद्रमाः । राहुस्तु तं परित्यज्य तदा सूर्यमधावत
O King, the Moon, gathering his strength, struck Rahu with a sword; Rahu abandoned him and rushed toward the Sun.
सहस्राशुं रणे जित्वा राहुश्चंद्रमधावत । जघान तं च खङ्गेन समरे रजनीपतिः
Having defeated the Moon in battle, Rahu rushed at him; but the lord of night struck Rahu with a sword in the fight.
सैंहिकेयांगकाठिन्यात्खङ्गं चूर्णमभूत्तदा । जघान मुष्टिना गाढं कठिनेन विधुंतुदः
Because of the hardness of Saiṃhika's body, the sword was shattered; Vidhuṃtuda struck him forcefully with his fist.
चंद्रमुत्थाप्य तं कंठे धृत्वा वेगान्महामृधे । गिलित्वा राहुणा चंद्रोप्युद्गीर्णश्च ततः पुनः
Lifting the Moon, he held him by the neck with great speed in the fierce battle; Rahu swallowed the Moon and then expelled him again.
मृगं स्वचिह्नमुरसि निधाय विससर्ज ह । स उच्चैःश्रवसं गृह्य हयरत्नं विधुंतुदः
Placing his own mark, the deer, upon his chest, he released him; Vidhuṃtuda seized Uccaiḥśravas, the jewel among horses.
जालंधरांतिकं नीत्वा भक्त्या तस्मै न्यवेदयत् । दुर्वारणो रणे क्रुद्धस्तं यमं गदया हनत्
Taking him to Jalandhara's presence, he devotedly offered him; Durvāraṇa, enraged in battle, struck Yama with his mace.
निशितैर्मार्गणैर्भिन्नः शक्रपुत्रेण चाहवे । धृत्वा जयंतं संह्रादः परिघाघातमूर्च्छितम्
Pierced by sharp arrows from Indra's son in battle, Samhrada seized Jayanta, who was stunned by the blow of the iron club.
ऐरावतं समारुह्य ययौ जालंधरं प्रति । हतवांश्चैव गदया निह्रादं धनदो रणे
Mounting Airavata, he went toward Jalandhara; Kubera struck Nirhrada with his mace and killed him in battle.
रुद्रास्त्रिशूलनिर्घातैर्निशुंभं जघ्नुरोजसा । निशुंभो बाणजालैश्च पीडयामास तानति
The Rudras, with the force of their tridents, killed Nishumbha; Nishumbha, in turn, afflicted them with showers of arrows.
शुंभासुरो देवगणान्पूरयामास मार्गणैः । मृत्युं मायामय मयो बद्ध्वा पाशैर्निनायतम्
The demon Shumbha filled the hosts of gods with arrows; having bound Death, who is made of illusion, with nooses, he led him away.
ददौ जालंधरायासौ पौलोम्ने सोऽपि सिंधवे । अब्धिना च मुखे क्षिप्तो लोको जीवतु निर्भयः
He gave Jalandhara to the son of Puloma, and he too to the Ocean; being cast into the mouth of the sea, the world lived on, free from fear.
बद्ध्वा च नमुचिं पाशैर्वासवोऽपि रसातलम् । निन्ये विश्वस्य हंतारं अथ जालंधरो ययौ
And Indra, having bound Namuci with nooses, led the destroyer of the universe down to the netherworld; then Jalandhara departed.
अथेंद्रबलयोर्युद्धमभूद्राजन्सुदारुणम् । बलांगरोचिषो भांति दिशो दश रवेरिव
Then, O king, there was a fierce battle between the armies of Indra and Bala; the brilliance of Bala's limbs shone in all ten directions like the sun.
सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि शक्रस्य शीर्णान्यंगे बलस्य च । बलीयसा बलेनेंद्रो मुद्गरेण हतो हृदि
All the weapons of Shakra and the limbs of Bala were shattered; Indra, with superior strength, struck Bala in the heart with a mace.
ननादेंद्रस्ततो भीमं तच्छ्रुत्वा स बलोहसत् । हसतस्तस्य निश्चेरुर्मुखतो मौक्तिकानि च
Then Indra roared terribly; hearing this, Bala laughed, and as he laughed, pearls issued forth from his mouth.
तस्यांगस्याभिलाषेण न युद्धमकरोत्तदा । तुष्टाव वासवोऽत्यर्थं तं बलं बलसागरम्
Because of the desire for those limbs, he did not fight at that time; Indra exceedingly praised Bala, the ocean of strength.
वरं वृणु सुरश्रेष्ठेत्युक्तः प्राह बलं प्रति । यदि तुष्टोऽसि दैत्येश स्वं वपुर्दातुमर्हसि
When told, 'Choose a boon, O best of gods,' Bala replied: 'If you are pleased, O lord of the Daityas, you should give me your own body.'
तदिंद्र वचनं श्रुत्वा भित्त्वा शस्त्रैर्गृहाण माम् । इत्युवाच बलं सोऽपि किमदेयं महात्मनाम्
Hearing those words of Indra, Bala said, 'Pierce me with weapons and take me; what is not to be given by the great-souled?'
सस्मारितो मातलिना वज्रेणांगं जघान तत् । तेन वज्रप्रहारेण बलांगं तद्व्यशीर्यत
Reminded by Matali, Indra struck that body with the thunderbolt; by that blow of the thunderbolt, Bala's body was shattered.
बलांगस्यैकभागस्तु पपात कनकाचले । तुहिनाद्रौ द्वितीयस्तु तृतीयो गोनगेऽपतत्
One part of Bala's body fell on the golden mountain; the second on the snowy mountain, and the third fell at Gonaga.
चतुर्थो देवनद्यां च पंचमो मंदरे तथा । वज्राकरे पपातांशः षष्ठश्च विजयांगजः
The fourth part fell in the divine river, the fifth on Mount Mandara; a portion fell in Vajrakara, and the sixth became Vijayangaja.
तस्य जातिविशुद्धस्य परिशुद्धेन कर्मणा । कायस्यावयवाः सर्वे रत्नबीजत्वमागताः
Because of his pure lineage and purified actions, all the limbs of his body became the seeds of jewels.
वज्रादस्थिकणाः कीर्णाः षट्कोणा मणयोऽभवन् । अक्षिभ्यामिन्द्रनीला वै माणिक्यं श्रुतिसंभवम्
From the fragments of his bones came six-sided diamonds; from his eyes, sapphires; from his ears, rubies.
