श्वसनः स्पर्शनो वायुरनिलो मारुतस्तथा । प्राणापानौ सजीवौ च मरुतोऽष्टौ तदग्रतः
Śvasana, Sparśana, Vāyu, Anila, and likewise Māruta, Prāṇa and Apāna with Jīva—these eight Maruts stood at the front.
विवस्वानपि तन्मध्ये ययौ द्वादशमूर्तिभिः । धनदः शिबिकारूढः किंनरेशो ययौ तदा
Vivasvat too, in their midst, went forth with his twelve forms; Dhanada, mounted on a palanquin, and the king of the Kiṃnaras also went then.
रुद्राश्च वृषभारूढा मारुतो मृगवाहनः । ययुः सैन्यस्य पुरतः त्रिशूलपरिघायुधाः
The Rudras, mounted on bulls, and the Marut, riding a deer, advanced at the front of the army, armed with tridents and maces.
गंधर्वाश्चारणा यक्षाः पिशाचोरग गुह्यकाः । सर्वसैन्यस्य पुरतः सर्वशस्त्रभृतो ययुः
Gandharvas, Cāraṇas, Yakṣas, Piśācas, Nāgas, and Guhyakas—all bearing weapons—went at the front of the whole army.
पूर्वापरौ तोयराशी समाक्रांतौ च सैनिकैः । तस्मिन्ससार भूमिराट्वराहवपुषा हरिः
The eastern and western oceans were crossed by the warriors; there, Hari, lord of the earth, moved in the form of battle.
स्वर्गादागत्य वेगेन दैत्यसैन्यजिघांसया । सुमेरोरुत्तरो भागः सुरसैन्येन संवृतः
Coming swiftly from heaven, desiring to destroy the army of the Daityas, the northern part of Sumeru was covered by the army of the gods.
सेनाभारोद्भुतकरस्तस्थौ जालंधरस्य च । आश्रित्य दक्षिणं भागं तूर्णं कनकशृंगतः
The mighty army of Jālandhara, with wondrous hands, stood occupying the southern part, quickly at the golden-peaked mountain.
अहोरात्रेण विहिता वर्षे तस्मिन्निलावृते । मेरुमंदरयोर्मध्ये युद्धभूमिः प्रतिष्ठिता
Within that blue-encircled region, in a year of day and night, between Meru and Mandara, the field of battle was established.
तत्रात्मजयदां भूमिं कविप्रोक्तां मुदायुताः । जग्मुस्ते दानवास्तूर्णं गुरुप्रोक्तां ययुः सुराः
There, the Daityas joyfully went to the land that grants victory to sons, as spoken by the seers; the gods quickly went to the place indicated by their teacher.
रथप्रवीरैः परितश्च संप्लवैर्गजैर्घनाकारमदप्रवाहिभिः । अश्वैरनंतैर्गरुडाग्रगामिभिः पदातिभिः सारणभूर्भृता बभौ
With expert charioteers all around, with elephants like masses of clouds streaming with ichor, with endless horses led by Garuḍa, and with foot soldiers, the earth shone, bearing the weight of the armies.
ततो वादित्रनिर्घोषः सेनयोरुभयोरभूत् । कोलाहलश्च वीराणामन्योन्यमभिगर्जताम्
Then the blare of instruments arose from both armies, and a tumult of heroes roared as they challenged one another.
अथ दानवदेवानां संग्रामोऽभूद्भयावहः । सर्वसैन्यस्य संमर्दो यथा त्रिभुवनक्षयः
Thereafter, a terrifying battle broke out between the gods and the demons, and the clash of all the armies was as if the three worlds were being destroyed.
भयक्रांता महाश्रांता श्रुतिर्विलपती मुहुः । स्वरथाकाररहितं शरैः संपूरितं तदा
Overcome by fear and utterly exhausted, the sense of hearing wailed again and again, as the field, stripped of chariots and filled with arrows, resounded.
रोमांचिता बभौ द्यौश्च रजोवस्त्रं विधुन्वती । रौद्रैर्विहंगमारावैस्त्रासादाक्रंदतीव हि
The sky appeared bristling, shaking off its dusty garment, and seemed to cry out in terror with the harsh calls of birds.
देवेंद्रेण तदाज्ञप्ता मेघाः संवर्तकादयः । गजानुच्चैः समारुह्य तेऽसुरान्युयुधुर्मृधे
At Indra's command, the clouds—beginning with the Samvartaka—mounted great elephants and fought the demons in battle.
देवानामश्वारोहाश्च जाता गंधर्वकिन्नराः । रथिनः साध्यसिद्धाश्च गजिनो यक्षचारणाः
Among the gods, the horsemen were Gandharvas and Kinnaras, the charioteers were Sādhyas and Siddhas, and the elephant riders were Yakṣas and Cāraṇas.
पदातिनः किंपुरुषाः पन्नगाः पवनाशनाः । रोगाणामधिपो राजन्यक्ष्मा च यमनायकः
The foot soldiers were Kiṃpuruṣas, serpents, and those who eat wind; the lord of diseases, the king of Yakṣmā, and the leader of Yama's attendants were also present.
तत्र दानवरोगाणां संग्रामोऽभूत्सुदारुणः । पतिता लुलुठुर्भूमौ दैत्याः शूलज्वरामयैः
There, a most dreadful battle took place between the demons and the diseases; the Daityas, afflicted by spears, fevers, and illnesses, fell and rolled on the ground.
दानवैर्निहता रोगाः पेतुः समरमूर्द्धनि । पलायांचक्रिरे केचित्व्याधयो भूधरान्प्रति
The diseases, struck down by the demons, fell upon the battlefield, and some ailments fled toward the mountains.
औषध्यस्तत्र सहजा वैशल्यकरणीमुखाः । ताभिर्विशल्याः सैन्येषु युयुधुर्यमकिंकराः
There, natural herbs—beginning with those that remove arrows—were present, and with them, Yama's attendants healed the wounded among the troops and continued fighting.
दानवैर्निहताः सर्वे शरमुद्गरपट्टिशैः । पदातयः पत्तिगणैः खङ्गैस्तीक्ष्णैः परश्वधैः
All the demons were slain by arrows, maces, and spears; the foot soldiers by infantry groups with sharp swords and axes.
कोटिशो जघ्नुरन्योन्यं रुधिरारुणविग्रहाः । अश्वचारा हयैस्तूर्णैश्चिक्षिपुर्गगने तदा
By the millions, they slew one another, their bodies reddened with blood; the horsemen hurled their swift steeds into the sky.
संश्लिष्य जघ्नुरन्योन्यं रुधिरारुणविग्रहाः । समूहो रथिनां भीमो रथौघैश्छाद्य मेदिनीम्
Clashing together, they killed each other, their forms crimson with blood; the terrible mass of charioteers covered the earth with their chariot-flood.
विव्यधुर्निशितैर्बाणैर्धनुर्मुक्तैर्महारथान् । मदक्षीणकपोलांगाः करैर्बद्धा करान्दृढम्
They pierced the great warriors with sharp arrows shot from bows, their faces and limbs emaciated by intoxication, their hands tightly gripping their weapons.
गजान्प्रतिगजाः क्रुद्धाः पातयंति महीतले । कोपि दैत्यो रथं दोर्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्योत्थाय खं ययौ
Enraged elephants brought down their rivals to the earth; one furious demon, lifting a chariot with his arms, rose up into the sky.
अश्वचारान्हयान्नागान्पातयामास भूतले । स्कंधे गृहीत्वा तरसा ययौ जालंधरं प्रति
Elephants struck down horsemen and horses to the ground; seizing one on his shoulder, he swiftly went toward Jālandhara.
कक्षयोर्वै गजौ गृह्य तृतीयं जठरोपरि । चतुर्थं मस्तके गृह्य रणे धावति कश्चन
Grasping two elephants under his arms, a third on his belly, and a fourth on his head, someone ran into battle.
उत्पाट्य कोशतः खङ्गं विधूय विमलांबरम् । ययौ सहस्रशो देवान्पातयित्वा रणेऽसुरः
Uprooting a sword from its sheath and shaking off his spotless garment, a demon went forth by the thousands, felling gods in battle.
काचित्पीनस्तनी तन्वी खेचरीरति लंपटा । आगत्य गगनात्तूर्णं निन्ये दैत्यं रणांगणात्
A certain slender woman with full breasts, eager for celestial pleasure, swiftly descended from the sky and carried the demon away from the battlefield.
चुचुंब सा तद्वदनं तीक्ष्णनाराचकीलितम् । देवसैन्यं ततो बद्ध्वा कालनेमिर्ननर्त्त ह
She kissed his face, pierced by sharp arrows, and then bound the divine army; Kalanemi began to dance.
