महेंद्रशिखरं चान्ये ययुर्दुंदुभिनिःस्वनैः । राजराजपुरीं भंक्त्वा यमस्य वरुणस्य च
Others went to the summit of Mahendra with the sound of drums, breaking the royal cities of Yama and Varuṇa.
अन्येषां लोकपालानामाययुस्तेऽमरावतीम् । अथोत्पाताभवन्नाके दिव्यभौमांतरिक्षगाः
They went to Amarāvatī, the city of the immortals, after conquering the guardians of other worlds; then omens appeared in heaven, on earth, and in the sky.
रजः पपात बहुलं तमस्तोमो विजृंभते । तदा पपात कुलिशं करादिंद्रस्य निष्प्रभम्
A thick dust fell, and deep darkness spread; then Indra’s thunderbolt fell from his hand, devoid of brilliance.
दृष्ट्वा निमित्तानि भयावहानि नाके महेंद्रो गुरुमित्युवाच । किं कुर्महे कं शरणं च यामस्तं पश्य युद्धं समुपस्थितं च
Seeing these terrifying omens in heaven, Mahendra said to his teacher: 'What shall we do? To whom shall we go for refuge? See, the battle has come upon us.'
ततो वाचस्पतिर्वाक्यमुवाच त्रिदशाधिपम् । चरणौ पाहि शरणं विष्णोर्वैकुंठवासिनः
Then Bṛhaspati spoke to the lord of the gods: 'Seek refuge at the feet of Viṣṇu, the dweller in Vaikuṇṭha.'
इत्युक्तो गुरुणा देवैः साकं वैकुंठमंदिरम् । जगामाखंडलः शीघ्रं शरणं कैटभद्विषः
Thus addressed by his teacher, Indra swiftly went, together with the gods, to the abode of Vaikuṇṭha, seeking shelter with the slayer of Kaiṭabha.
शशंस वासुदेवाय विजयो द्वारपालकः । जालंधरभयत्रस्ताः सर्वे देवाः समागताः
The doorkeeper announced to Vāsudeva: 'All the gods, terrified by the threat of Jālandhara, have assembled here.'
श्रीरुवाच-। न वध्योऽसौ मम भ्राता देवार्थे युध्यता त्वया । शापितो देव मत्प्रीत्या वधार्हो न भविष्यति
Śrī said: 'He is not to be slain by you, for he is my brother, even if you fight for the sake of the gods. By my favor, O god, he is cursed and will not be subject to death.'
इति श्रीवचनं श्रुत्वा विष्णुस्त्रैलोक्यपालकः । अथारुरोह गरुडं पक्षक्षेपावृतांबरम्
Hearing these words of Śrī, Viṣṇu, the protector of the three worlds, then mounted Garuḍa, whose wings covered the sky.
वैकुंठभवनात्तूर्णं निर्गतस्त्रिदशान्हरिः । जालंधरभयत्रस्तान्गतकांतीनथैक्षत
Swiftly departing from the abode of Vaikuṇṭha, Hari saw the gods, terrified by Jālandhara, who had lost their beloveds.
ददृशुस्ते सुराः सर्वे हरिं सांद्रघनोपमम् । शार्ङ्गशंखगदापद्मविभूषितचतुर्भुजम्
All the gods beheld Hari, resembling a dense raincloud, adorned with four arms bearing the bow Śārṅga, conch, mace, and lotus.
स्तोत्रं पठित्वा पुरतः प्राहेंद्रः सरितांपतेः । जालंधरेणात्मजेन भग्नं देव त्रिविष्टपम् 6.5.
After reciting a hymn before him, Indra, lord of rivers, spoke: 'O god, the realm of the gods has been destroyed by Jālandhara, son of the ocean.'
तदिंद्रवचनं श्रुत्वाऽभयं दत्वा दिवौकसाम् । विजेतुमसुरं देवैः सह रेजे सुरांतकृत्
Hearing the words of Indra, granting safety to the dwellers of heaven, the destroyer of the gods shone forth, ready to conquer the demon together with the gods.
अथानीतं मातलिना रथमारुह्य वासवः । वासुदेवस्य पुरतः प्रययौ विधृताशनिः
Then, having mounted the chariot brought by Mātali, Vāsava, holding his thunderbolt, set out before Vāsudeva.
वामतस्त्रिदशाः सर्वे सव्यतश्च समाययौ । स्वाहाप्रियो दक्षिणतः स च मेषं समास्थितः
All the gods stood to the left, and to the right came the beloved of Svāhā, mounted upon a ram.
आरुह्यैरावतं नागं जयंतः शक्रनंदनः । उच्चैःश्रवसमिंद्रश्च उभौ भगवतः पुरः
Jayanta, son of Śakra, mounted Airāvata the elephant, and Indra on Uccaiḥśravas, both stood before the Blessed Lord.
धातार्यमा च मित्रश्च वरुणोंशो भगस्तथा । इंद्रो विवस्वान्पूषा च पर्जन्यो दशमः स्मृतः
Dhātṛ, Aryaman, Mitra, Varuṇa, Aṃśa, Bhaga, Indra, Vivasvat, Pūṣan, and Parjanya are remembered as the ten.
ततस्त्वष्टा ततो विष्णू रेजे धन्यो जघन्यजः । इत्येते द्वादशादित्या इंद्रस्य पुरतः स्थिताः
Then Tvaṣṭṛ, then Viṣṇu, the blessed youngest, shone forth; thus these twelve Ādityas stood before Indra.
वीरभद्रश्च शंभुश्च गिरिशश्च महायशाः । अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्यः पिनाकी चापराजितः
Vīrabhadra, Śaṃbhu, and the illustrious Giriśa; Ajaikapāda, Ahibudhnya, Pinākī, and Aparājita,
भुवनाधीश्वरश्चैव कपाली च विशांपते । स्थाणुर्भगश्च भगवान्रुद्रा एकादश स्मृताः
The Lord of the worlds, Kapālī, O lord of men, Sthāṇu, Bhaga, and the Blessed One—these eleven are remembered as the Rudras.
श्वसनः स्पर्शनो वायुरनिलो मारुतस्तथा । प्राणापानौ सजीवौ च मरुतोऽष्टौ तदग्रतः
Śvasana, Sparśana, Vāyu, Anila, and likewise Māruta, Prāṇa and Apāna with Jīva—these eight Maruts stood at the front.
विवस्वानपि तन्मध्ये ययौ द्वादशमूर्तिभिः । धनदः शिबिकारूढः किंनरेशो ययौ तदा
Vivasvat too, in their midst, went forth with his twelve forms; Dhanada, mounted on a palanquin, and the king of the Kiṃnaras also went then.
रुद्राश्च वृषभारूढा मारुतो मृगवाहनः । ययुः सैन्यस्य पुरतः त्रिशूलपरिघायुधाः
The Rudras, mounted on bulls, and the Marut, riding a deer, advanced at the front of the army, armed with tridents and maces.
गंधर्वाश्चारणा यक्षाः पिशाचोरग गुह्यकाः । सर्वसैन्यस्य पुरतः सर्वशस्त्रभृतो ययुः
Gandharvas, Cāraṇas, Yakṣas, Piśācas, Nāgas, and Guhyakas—all bearing weapons—went at the front of the whole army.
पूर्वापरौ तोयराशी समाक्रांतौ च सैनिकैः । तस्मिन्ससार भूमिराट्वराहवपुषा हरिः
The eastern and western oceans were crossed by the warriors; there, Hari, lord of the earth, moved in the form of battle.
स्वर्गादागत्य वेगेन दैत्यसैन्यजिघांसया । सुमेरोरुत्तरो भागः सुरसैन्येन संवृतः
Coming swiftly from heaven, desiring to destroy the army of the Daityas, the northern part of Sumeru was covered by the army of the gods.
सेनाभारोद्भुतकरस्तस्थौ जालंधरस्य च । आश्रित्य दक्षिणं भागं तूर्णं कनकशृंगतः
The mighty army of Jālandhara, with wondrous hands, stood occupying the southern part, quickly at the golden-peaked mountain.
अहोरात्रेण विहिता वर्षे तस्मिन्निलावृते । मेरुमंदरयोर्मध्ये युद्धभूमिः प्रतिष्ठिता
Within that blue-encircled region, in a year of day and night, between Meru and Mandara, the field of battle was established.
तत्रात्मजयदां भूमिं कविप्रोक्तां मुदायुताः । जग्मुस्ते दानवास्तूर्णं गुरुप्रोक्तां ययुः सुराः
There, the Daityas joyfully went to the land that grants victory to sons, as spoken by the seers; the gods quickly went to the place indicated by their teacher.
रथप्रवीरैः परितश्च संप्लवैर्गजैर्घनाकारमदप्रवाहिभिः । अश्वैरनंतैर्गरुडाग्रगामिभिः पदातिभिः सारणभूर्भृता बभौ
With expert charioteers all around, with elephants like masses of clouds streaming with ichor, with endless horses led by Garuḍa, and with foot soldiers, the earth shone, bearing the weight of the armies.
