दग्धं चराचरं येन वह्निना हयरूपिणा । स चापि विधृतस्तेन सागरेण दुरात्मना
All moving and unmoving beings were burned by the fire in the form of a horse; he too was held by that wicked ocean.
धर्मद्विषां दानवानामसौ वै आश्रयः प्रभुः । नित्यं दधि घृतं क्षीरं दानवेभ्यः प्रयच्छति
That lord is the refuge of the demons who hate righteousness; he constantly gives curds, ghee, and milk to the Danavas.
अतएवायमस्माभिः दुर्वारण विलोडितः । दंडितश्च गतश्रीको देवैरथ पुरातनैः
Therefore, Durvarana, we have churned him, punished him, and stripped him of his splendor, together with the ancient gods.
शृणु दूत सबंधेन मम विप्रेण शोषितः । कुंभोद्भवेन किंचैष दुःसंगे नैव बाध्यते
Listen, messenger, in detail: I was dried up by my own priest, born from a pot; yet, in this bad association, he is not troubled at all.
सोऽपि युद्धार्थमस्माभिः सर्वसैन्येन संवृतः । आगमिष्यति वै नाशं गमिष्यति तदैव हि
He too, surrounded by all his army, will come to fight with us; and then he will surely meet his destruction.
इतीरयित्वा विरराम वृत्रहा सरित्पतेरात्मजदूतमुच्चकैः । शशंस चागत्य समुद्रसूनोर्देवेश्वरेणोक्तमशेषमादितः
Having spoken thus, the slayer of Vritra fell silent, loudly instructing the messenger of the river lord's son; and, returning, he reported to the son of the ocean all that the lord of the gods had said from the beginning.
नारद उवाच-। महेंद्र वचनं श्रुत्वा निजदूतमुखेन च । समुद्रसूनुः संक्रुद्धः सर्वं सैन्यं समाह्वयत्
Narada said: Hearing Mahendra's words through his own messenger, the son of the ocean, enraged, summoned his entire army.
रसातलस्थिता दैत्याः ये च भूतलवासिनः । आययुः सबलास्तत्र जालंधरमथाज्ञया
The demons dwelling in the netherworld and those living on earth came there with their forces, by the command of Jalandhara.
प्रयाणप्रक्रमे सिंधुसूनोः सैन्यस्य गर्जितैः । स्फुटंति नभसो राजन्पातालमखिला दिशः
At the outset of the march, O king, the roars of the army of the ocean's son made the sky, the netherworld, and all directions resound.
हयनागोष्ट्रवदना बिडालमुखभीषणाः । व्याघ्रसिंहाखुवदना विद्युत्सदृशलोचनाः
Some had faces of horses, elephants, and camels; others, terrifying cat faces; some had faces of tigers, lions, and rats, with eyes like lightning.
सर्पकेशा महादेहाः केचित्खङ्गतनूरुहाः । अन्ये च परिधावंति गर्जंति जलदस्वनैः
Some had serpents for hair, huge bodies, and swords as their limbs; others ran about, roaring with the sound of thunderclouds.
रथगजहयपत्तिसंकुलं समरविनोदकदंब भासुरम् । अब्जशतसहस्रकोटिनायकं बलमखिलं च तदा रराज राजन्
That entire army, resplendent and delightful in battle, crowded with chariots, elephants, horses, and infantry, was led by a hundred thousand million lotus-born heroes, O king.
शतयोजनविस्तीर्णं विमानं हंसकोटिभिः । युक्तं भूतिसहस्रौघं सर्ववस्तुप्रपूरितम्
There was a flying palace, a hundred yojanas wide, yoked with millions of swans, filled with thousands of hosts of spirits, and containing all kinds of treasures.
तद्विमानं समारुह्य सद्यो जालंधरो ययौ । मध्याह्ने मंदरं प्राप्तः प्रथमेऽह्नि बलैः सह
Ascending that flying palace, Jalandhara immediately set out; at midday, on the first day, he reached Mandara with his forces.
खंडितं शिबिकावाहैर्दलितं भूरिकुंजरैः । द्वितीये दिवसे मेरुं संप्राप्तो बलसंयुतः
Damaged by palanquins and shattered by many elephants, he reached Meru, accompanied by his army, on the second day.
इलावृत्ते तु शिखरे तस्थौ तत्कटकं महत् । अथ दैत्याधिपैर्भग्नं खांडवं नंदनं वनम्
On the summit of Ilāvṛta, that great host stood; then the Khāṇḍava and Nandana forests were destroyed by the lords of the Daityas.
शिखराणि विशीर्णानि मेरोर्दानवपुंगवैः । संतानकेषु वृक्षेषु बद्धा हिंदोलमंचकान्
The peaks of Meru were broken by the foremost Dānavas; swings were tied to the branches of the trees in the groves.
सिद्धांगनाभिः सहिता रेमिरे दैत्यपुंगवाः । कुचकुंकुमतांबूल चंदनागरुभूषणैः
The leading Daityas, together with Siddha women, sported there, adorned with saffron from breasts, betel, sandalwood, and agaru.
केशपाशच्युतैः पुष्पैः मेरोः संपूरिता नदी । सुमेरोः पूर्वदिग्भागो गजैस्तस्य विघट्टितः
The river of Meru was filled with flowers fallen from their hair; the eastern region of Sumeru was trampled by their elephants.
दक्षिणं च रथैश्चेरुरुत्तरं पश्चिमं भटैः । अथ प्रस्थापयामास दैत्याञ्जालधरोऽसुरः
They moved southward with chariots, north and west with warriors; then the Asura Jālandhara sent forth the Daityas.
महेंद्रशिखरं चान्ये ययुर्दुंदुभिनिःस्वनैः । राजराजपुरीं भंक्त्वा यमस्य वरुणस्य च
Others went to the summit of Mahendra with the sound of drums, breaking the royal cities of Yama and Varuṇa.
अन्येषां लोकपालानामाययुस्तेऽमरावतीम् । अथोत्पाताभवन्नाके दिव्यभौमांतरिक्षगाः
They went to Amarāvatī, the city of the immortals, after conquering the guardians of other worlds; then omens appeared in heaven, on earth, and in the sky.
रजः पपात बहुलं तमस्तोमो विजृंभते । तदा पपात कुलिशं करादिंद्रस्य निष्प्रभम्
A thick dust fell, and deep darkness spread; then Indra’s thunderbolt fell from his hand, devoid of brilliance.
दृष्ट्वा निमित्तानि भयावहानि नाके महेंद्रो गुरुमित्युवाच । किं कुर्महे कं शरणं च यामस्तं पश्य युद्धं समुपस्थितं च
Seeing these terrifying omens in heaven, Mahendra said to his teacher: 'What shall we do? To whom shall we go for refuge? See, the battle has come upon us.'
ततो वाचस्पतिर्वाक्यमुवाच त्रिदशाधिपम् । चरणौ पाहि शरणं विष्णोर्वैकुंठवासिनः
Then Bṛhaspati spoke to the lord of the gods: 'Seek refuge at the feet of Viṣṇu, the dweller in Vaikuṇṭha.'
इत्युक्तो गुरुणा देवैः साकं वैकुंठमंदिरम् । जगामाखंडलः शीघ्रं शरणं कैटभद्विषः
Thus addressed by his teacher, Indra swiftly went, together with the gods, to the abode of Vaikuṇṭha, seeking shelter with the slayer of Kaiṭabha.
शशंस वासुदेवाय विजयो द्वारपालकः । जालंधरभयत्रस्ताः सर्वे देवाः समागताः
The doorkeeper announced to Vāsudeva: 'All the gods, terrified by the threat of Jālandhara, have assembled here.'
श्रीरुवाच-। न वध्योऽसौ मम भ्राता देवार्थे युध्यता त्वया । शापितो देव मत्प्रीत्या वधार्हो न भविष्यति
Śrī said: 'He is not to be slain by you, for he is my brother, even if you fight for the sake of the gods. By my favor, O god, he is cursed and will not be subject to death.'
इति श्रीवचनं श्रुत्वा विष्णुस्त्रैलोक्यपालकः । अथारुरोह गरुडं पक्षक्षेपावृतांबरम्
Hearing these words of Śrī, Viṣṇu, the protector of the three worlds, then mounted Garuḍa, whose wings covered the sky.
वैकुंठभवनात्तूर्णं निर्गतस्त्रिदशान्हरिः । जालंधरभयत्रस्तान्गतकांतीनथैक्षत
Swiftly departing from the abode of Vaikuṇṭha, Hari saw the gods, terrified by Jālandhara, who had lost their beloveds.
