Having brought the army under his control and made the waters firm upon the earth, Jalandhara then assumed the kingdom given by his father.
At that time, there was an apsaras named Svarṇā in heaven; by the favor of Krauñca, she became the mother of Vṛndā.
Whatever distinct beauty and prosperity the Creator had fashioned separately, all that was brought together in the form of Vṛndā’s body.
That Vṛndā, with her exceedingly lovely form, enchanting all people, Svarṇā gave to Śukra at his request, for the sake of Jalandhara.
Śukra said: ‘O you with thighs like plantains, by this wondrous weapon of Kāma, the delight of the world, and by this beauty, may you have long life and happiness.’
Having fashioned, with his own hands and with a mind astonished by the essence of beauty, the vessel of his own creative effort, the Creator placed it here; women bestow Kāma upon a man, and when he is seen, he is to be gazed upon to the limit—may you obtain such beauty and a husband, a warrior with long eyes.
The ocean’s son married Vṛndā with a gāndharva wedding; the two became husband and wife, bringing joy to the people, O king.
Vṛndā, too, abandoned fickleness, and Jalandhara, by his conduct and mature actions, did not desire another woman.
Once, as he sat in the assembly, seeing Rāhu with his head severed, he asked Bhārgava: 'Why does this one remain with only half a body?'
He then recounted to him, from the beginning, the former events: how the gods had churned the ocean of milk for the sake of nectar.
Hearing this, Jālandhara the Asura, astonished, spoke these words: 'By your favor, Rāhu, you now possess the power to assume any form you wish.'
Thus, by the counsel of Śukra, the mighty son of the ocean, recalling his uncle, bravely waged war against the gods.
Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'Who is the uncle of the son of the ocean? What happened in his conflict? How did that Daitya wage war? Tell me this, O Nārada.'
Nārada said: 'Listen, O tiger among kings. The uncle of Jālandhara is the ocean of milk. The gods, after churning him, took away his wealth.'
The goddess Śrī, the moon, nectar, serpents, and horses first emerged from him through the efforts of gods and asuras. Hearing this, Jālandhara waged war against the gods.
Once, he sent a messenger named Durvāraṇa, mighty and unstoppable, instructing him on what to say at the palace of Indra.
Then Durvāraṇa mounted his chariot and went to heaven. Wishing to enter the palace, he was stopped at the gate by the doorkeepers.
The messenger said: 'I am the envoy of Jālandhara, come into the presence of Śakra. You should go and inform your lord that I have arrived.'
Hearing his words, they immediately went to the lord of Śacī, bowed, and said: 'A messenger from the gods has arrived on earth.'
The doorkeeper, instructed by Mahendra, brought the messenger, taking him by the hand, to the presence of Vāsava.
Durvāraṇa entered the assembly of the gods and looked around, seeing Hari surrounded by thirty crore gods.
He saw the divine golden throne, fanned by celestial chowries, and a thousand lotus eyes blossoming with the nectar of Śacī's love.
Then Durvāraṇa, beholding the lord of the gods together with his guru, bowed, his eyes shining with pride and a smile on his face.
The messenger of Jālandhara took the seat indicated to him. Hari asked him: 'Who are you? For what purpose have you come?'
The messenger of Jālandhara said to Purandara: 'He is the king of all worlds. Hear his command from my mouth.'
'My uncle is the ocean of milk. Why did you churn him with Mount Mandara and seize the great treasure and wealth?'
Give the moon, nectar, the elephant Airavata, that jewel, coral, and all such treasures, as well as heaven itself; quickly depart, O Purandara.
Therefore, at my command, promptly do everything as is proper; beg forgiveness from that king, if you wish to live.
Then, smiling, Maghavan spoke to Durvarana: 'Listen, messenger, in brief, to the reason for the churning of the ocean.'
Long ago, the son of Himavat, named Mainaka, was my enemy; he was held in the belly by that dull-witted ocean.
