कृतांजलिपुटो भूत्वा व्याजहारार्णवः कविम् । दिष्ट्या तवात्रागमनं वद किं करवाण्यहम्
With hands joined in reverence, the ocean addressed the sage: 'By good fortune you have come here; tell me, what shall I do?'
तदा दैत्यकुलाचार्यः प्राह तं सागरं कविः । किं तेन जातु जातेन मातुर्यौवनहारिणा
Then the sage, preceptor of the Daityas, said to the ocean: 'What is the use of a son who, once born, destroys his mother's youth?'
प्ररोहति नयः स्वस्य वंशस्याग्रे ध्वजो यथा । तवात्मजो विक्रमेण त्रैलोक्यं भोक्ष्यति ध्रुवम्
Just as a banner rises at the forefront of its own lineage, so too, by his valor, your son will surely enjoy dominion over the three worlds.
जंबूद्वीपे महापीठं योगिनीगणसेवितम् । आप्लावितं त्वयेदानीं मुंच जालंधरालयम्
On Jambudvīpa there is a great seat, attended by groups of yoginīs, now flooded by you; release the abode of Jālandhara.
तत्र राज्यं प्रयच्छास्मै तनयाय महार्णव । अजेयश्चाप्यवध्यश्च तत्रस्थोऽयं भविष्यति
There, O Ocean, grant the kingdom to your son; dwelling there, he will be invincible and unassailable.
एवमुक्तोऽर्णवः प्रीत्या भार्गवेणाथ लीलया । अपासर्पत्सुतप्रीत्यै जले स्थलमदर्शयत्
Thus addressed by Bhārgava, the Ocean, pleased, playfully withdrew, and out of affection for his son revealed land within the waters.
शतयोजनविस्तीर्णमायतं च शतत्रयम् । देशं जालंधरं पुण्यं तस्य नाम्नैव विश्रुतम्
That sacred region, known by his name, Jālandhara, was three hundred yojanas long and a hundred yojanas wide.
दैत्यवर्यं समाहूय मयं प्रोवाच सागरः । पुरं जालंधरे पीठे कुरु जालंधराय वै
Summoning the foremost of the Daityas, Maya, the Ocean said: 'Build a city for Jālandhara on that seat at Jālandhara.'
अंभोधिनैवमुक्तस्तु चक्रे रत्नमयं पुरम् । प्राकारगोपुरद्वारं सोपानगृहभूमिकम्
Thus addressed by the Ocean, he constructed a city of jewels, complete with ramparts, gateways, towers, stairways, houses, and terraces.
यत्रेंद्रनीलसंबद्धप्रासादतल संस्थिताः । मेनिरे जलदोद्योगं तांडवस्थाः शिखंडिनः
There, on the palace terraces adorned with sapphires, the peacocks, mistaking the clouds' activity for a dance, began their own display.
यत्र प्रवालमाणिक्य भवनोत्था मरीचयः । सेव्यंते शकुनैश्चूतरुचिरांकुरशंकया
There, rays arising from coral and ruby mansions are attended by birds, mistaking them for the tender shoots of mango trees.
यत्र कांचनहर्म्येषु त्विषो वह्निषु कातराः । विलोक्य प्रपलायंते दावशंकाः शिखंडिनः
There, in the golden mansions, the peacocks, frightened by the brilliance resembling fire, fled, fearing a forest blaze.
यत्र स्फटिकशालोत्थ प्रभासं मिश्रिता दिशः । विभांति मंदरोद्भ्रांताः सफेनार्णवसंनिभाः
There, the directions, brightened by the radiance from crystal halls, shone like Mandara mountain clouds, high and foaming like the ocean.
यत्र मोहं स्वहर्म्येषु विभातालोकसंस्थिताः । चक्रिरे ललनाः पूर्णसांध्यचंद्रोपमाननाः
There, in their own mansions, women with faces like the full moon at dusk, adorned with radiant beauty, created bewilderment.
यत्रेन्द्र नीप कादंब पवनोद्यानमोदिताः । चित्तं विशंत्यो नारीणां चक्रिरे मोहनज्वरम्
There, delighted by the breezes of parks filled with Indra-trees and kadamba trees, the hearts of women were seized by the fever of infatuation.
यत्र लेख्यगतं नॄणां विलोक्य सुरतं जनः । संयाति द्विगुणं नूनं निजकांतारतोद्यमः
There, seeing depictions of lovers in paintings, people found their own passion for their beloveds certainly doubled.
यत्र वातायनोद्धूत धूपधूमस्य लेखयः । नभो बभूव तद्गंगाकालिंदीसंगमोपमम्
There, streaks of incense smoke, driven by the windows, appeared in the sky like the confluence of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā.
यत्रानेकगृहोद्भूत प्रभया सकलं नभः । विभातींद्रायुधाकीर्णं शरन्मेघ इवोन्नतः
There, by the radiance arising from many houses, the entire sky shone, adorned with rainbows like lofty autumn clouds.
यत्रानिशं भ्रमभ्रांताः सूर्यवाहाः प्रपीडिताः । विश्रामं यांति मध्याह्ने प्रासादशिरसि स्थिताः
There, the sun's steeds, wandering endlessly and exhausted, found rest at midday, standing atop the palace roofs.
यत्रकुत्रच हर्म्येषु बिभ्रत्यो मालतीस्रजः । रात्रौ संभूतनक्षत्रा इव रेजुर्वरांगनाः
There and everywhere in the mansions, noble women wearing garlands of jasmine shone at night like stars newly arisen.
यत्र हाटकहिंदोल शृंखलाघर्षणोद्भवः । चकार सुंदरीं शब्दः स्फुटं मेरुभुवोभुवम्
There, the sound produced by the friction of golden swings and chains resounded clearly from the surface of Mount Meru to the earth below.
साकं सरिद्भिः पुत्रस्योशनसा सह सागरः । तत्राभिषेकमकरोद्वादित्रैर्निज गर्जितैः
Together with the rivers, the ocean—joined by his son Ushanas—performed the abhiṣeka (anointing) there, with his own thundering roars as musical instruments.
याः स्कंदस्य जगाद तारकजये देवः स्वयंभूः स्वयं स्वः साम्राज्यमहोत्सवेऽपि च शचीकांतस्य वाचस्पतिः । ताभिश्चित्रविंरिंचि वक्त्रसरसी हंसीभिराशास्महे वाणीभिर्वसुधाविवाहसमये मंत्रोत्सवैर्मंगलम्
Those auspicious words which Brahmā himself spoke at Skanda’s victory over Tāraka, and which Bṛhaspati uttered at the great imperial festival of Indra—may such varied, beautiful words, like swans in the lake of the Creator’s mouth, bring us blessings, as do the mantras and festivities at the wedding of the earth.
महापद्मसहस्रं तु सैन्यमात्मोदरोद्भवम् । जालंधराय पुत्राय ददौ भीमं महोदधिः
The mighty ocean gave to his son Jalandhara an army born from his own depths, numbering a thousand great lotuses.
जालंधराय शुक्रोऽपि प्रीत्या विद्यां निजां ददौ । मृतसंजीवनीं नाम्ना मायां रुद्रविमोहिनीम्
Śukra also, out of affection, gave to Jalandhara his own knowledge—the Māyā called Mṛtasaṃjīvanī, which could bewilder even Rudra.
शस्त्रास्त्रविद्या अन्याश्च विधिना अब्धिसूनवे । यदन्यत्सकलं तस्मै व्याख्यातं कविना तदा
All other knowledge of weapons and missiles, and everything else, was then explained to the son of the ocean by the sage, according to proper procedure.
ततो जालंधरं पुत्रमभिषिच्यार्णवो ययौ । स्वस्थानं दिव्यदेहेन नदीभिः परिवारितः
Then, after anointing his son Jalandhara, the ocean returned to his own abode in his divine form, surrounded by the rivers.
दृष्ट्वा जालंधरो दिव्यपुरं गोपुरमंडितम् । व्यचरत्सह शुक्रेण द्विजसंघैः सुपूजितः
Seeing the divine city adorned with lofty gateways, Jalandhara wandered there with Śukra, honored by assemblies of brahmins.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे दैत्याः पातालस्था महाबलाः । प्राप्ता जालंधरं सर्वे कालनेमिपुरोगमाः
Meanwhile, the mighty daityas dwelling in Pātāla, led by Kālanemi, all came to Jalandhara.
ततो महाबला वीरा बलं क्षीरोदसंनिभम् । तस्य शुंभासुरं दैत्यं सेनापतिमकल्पयन्
Then those powerful and heroic asuras, whose strength rivaled the ocean of milk, appointed the daitya Śumbha as the commander of his army.
