रुदतोत्कंपिता पृथ्वी त्रिलोकी नादिताभवत् । समाधिबद्धमुद्रां च संतत्याज चतुर्मुखः
As he cried, the earth trembled and the three worlds resounded; and the Four-faced One abandoned his meditation posture.
अत्रांतरे परित्रस्तां तां संवीक्ष्य जगत्त्रयीम् । धाता सुरेंद्रवाक्येन प्रजगाम महार्णवम्
Meanwhile, seeing the three worlds terrified, the Creator, at the word of the king of the gods, went to the great ocean.
आश्चर्यमिति संचिंत्य हंसारूढो जवाद्ययौ । ब्रह्माणमागतं वीक्ष्य सपर्यां विदधेऽर्णवः । तमुवाच ततो ब्रह्मा किं गर्जसि वृथांबुधे
Thinking, 'This is wondrous,' he swiftly mounted his swan and went; seeing Brahmā arrive, the ocean offered worship. Then Brahmā said to him, 'Why do you roar in vain, O ocean?'
समुद्र उवाच-। नाहं गर्जामि देवेश मत्सुतो बलवान्प्रभो । शिशोर्वै कुरु रक्षां च दुर्ल्लभं तव दर्शनम्
The ocean said: 'I do not roar, Lord of gods; my son is powerful, Lord. Protect the child, for your appearance is rare.'
संदृश्यतां च तनयो भार्यां प्राहातिशोभनाम् । ययौ सा भर्तुरादेशात्सपुत्रा ब्रह्मणोंतिके
He said, 'Let the son be presented,' and told his wife, who was exceedingly beautiful. By her husband's command, she went with her son to Brahmā.
उत्संगदेशे चतुराननस्य विधाय पुत्रं चरणौ ननाम । तदा समुद्रात्मजमद्भुतं तं दृष्ट्वा विधातुः किल विस्मयोऽभूत्
Placing her son on the lap of the four-faced one, she bowed at his feet. Then, seeing that wondrous son of the ocean, the Creator was truly amazed.
गृहीतकूर्चस्य शिशोः करं च यदा विरिंचिर्न शशाक मोचितुम् । तदा समुद्रः प्रहसन्प्रयातः कूर्चं प्रगृह्यार्भकरं विमोचयन्
When Brahmā, holding his kuśa grass, could not free his hand from the child's grasp, then the ocean, smiling, approached, took the kuśa, and released the child's hand.
तादृशं तस्य बालस्य दृष्ट्वा विक्रममात्मभूः । प्रीत्या जालंधरेत्याह नाम्ना जालंधरोऽभवत् 6.3.
Seeing such strength in that boy, the self-born one joyfully said, 'He shall be called Jālandhara,' and thus he became known by that name.
वरं ददावथो तस्य प्रणयेन प्रजापतिः । अयं जालंधरो देवैरजेयश्च भविष्यति
Then, out of affection, the Lord of Creatures granted him a boon: 'This Jālandhara shall be invincible to the gods.'
पातालसहितं नाकं मत्प्रसादेन भोक्ष्यति । इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे ब्रह्मा हंसमारुह्य सत्वरः
'By my favor, he will enjoy heaven along with the netherworld.' Having said this, Brahmā swiftly vanished, mounting his swan.
नारद उवाच- क्रमेण वर्द्धमानोऽसौ बाल्यभावे स बालकः । निपत्य मारुतोत्संगे सागरं प्रति धावति
Nārada said: Gradually growing up, that boy, in his childhood, fell into the lap of the wind and ran toward the ocean.
आनीय चक्रे स च पंजरस्थान्क्रीडापरः केसरिणां किशोरान् । सिंहादिनेभादिनि युद्धमेवं युधोपयोगीव तदीय वीर्यम्
He brought and kept in cages the lion cubs, delighting in play; with lions and elephants he engaged in battles, displaying his strength as if for sport.
तस्मादाकाशमुत्पत्य खेचरान्पातयेद्भुवि । गर्जितैर्भीषयामास स्वर्गं हि सह सागरम्
From there, leaping into the sky, he would hurl the sky-dwellers down to earth; with his roars he terrified heaven together with the ocean.
समुद्रांतर्गतं सर्वं सत्वजातं तु पार्थिव । ग्रस्तं सिंधुसुतेनेति तद्भयाच्छन्नतां गतम्
All living beings within the ocean were swallowed by the son of the ocean, and out of fear of him, they went into hiding.
दृष्ट्वा निःसत्वकं तोयं तद्भयाद्वडवानलः । निजदेशं परित्यज्य प्रविवेश हिमालयम्
Seeing the water devoid of living beings, the submarine fire, out of fear of him, abandoned its own place and entered the Himalayas.
स बालत्वं परित्यज्य क्रमेणार्णवनंदनः । ततो नवं वयः प्राप्य विक्रमेणाक्रमद्दिवम्
Abandoning childhood, the son of the ocean gradually attained youth, and with his vigor, he ascended to the heavens.
एकदा पितरं प्राह समुद्रं सिंधुनंदनः । मन्निवासोचितं स्थानं देहि तातातिविस्तृतम्
One day, the son of the ocean said to his father, 'Father, give me a dwelling place suitable for me, vast in extent.'
संबुद्ध्य वचनं सूनोः स जगाद महार्णवः । पुत्र दास्याम्यहं राज्यं तव वा भुवि दुर्ल्लभम्
Hearing his son's words, the great ocean replied, 'My son, I will give you a kingdom, rare even on earth.'
अनंतरं दैत्यगुरुः समुद्रं भार्गवो गतः । तमागतं विलोक्याब्धिर्विधिना समपूजयत्
Immediately after, the preceptor of the Daityas, Bhārgava, came to the ocean. Seeing him arrive, the ocean honored him according to custom.
अथ नदिपतिदत्ते प्राप्तसौंदर्यनिर्यन्मणिमहसि स तस्मिन्नासने सन्निविष्टः । रुचिररुचि सुमेरोः सुंदरे शृंगभागे कमलजइव कांतिं किंचिदुच्चैर्जहार
Then, seated on a throne given by the lord of rivers, shining with jewels that outshone beauty, he, sitting there, stole away some of the radiance of the lotus-born one on the beautiful peak of Mount Meru.
कृतांजलिपुटो भूत्वा व्याजहारार्णवः कविम् । दिष्ट्या तवात्रागमनं वद किं करवाण्यहम्
With hands joined in reverence, the ocean addressed the sage: 'By good fortune you have come here; tell me, what shall I do?'
तदा दैत्यकुलाचार्यः प्राह तं सागरं कविः । किं तेन जातु जातेन मातुर्यौवनहारिणा
Then the sage, preceptor of the Daityas, said to the ocean: 'What is the use of a son who, once born, destroys his mother's youth?'
प्ररोहति नयः स्वस्य वंशस्याग्रे ध्वजो यथा । तवात्मजो विक्रमेण त्रैलोक्यं भोक्ष्यति ध्रुवम्
Just as a banner rises at the forefront of its own lineage, so too, by his valor, your son will surely enjoy dominion over the three worlds.
जंबूद्वीपे महापीठं योगिनीगणसेवितम् । आप्लावितं त्वयेदानीं मुंच जालंधरालयम्
On Jambudvīpa there is a great seat, attended by groups of yoginīs, now flooded by you; release the abode of Jālandhara.
तत्र राज्यं प्रयच्छास्मै तनयाय महार्णव । अजेयश्चाप्यवध्यश्च तत्रस्थोऽयं भविष्यति
There, O Ocean, grant the kingdom to your son; dwelling there, he will be invincible and unassailable.
एवमुक्तोऽर्णवः प्रीत्या भार्गवेणाथ लीलया । अपासर्पत्सुतप्रीत्यै जले स्थलमदर्शयत्
Thus addressed by Bhārgava, the Ocean, pleased, playfully withdrew, and out of affection for his son revealed land within the waters.
शतयोजनविस्तीर्णमायतं च शतत्रयम् । देशं जालंधरं पुण्यं तस्य नाम्नैव विश्रुतम्
That sacred region, known by his name, Jālandhara, was three hundred yojanas long and a hundred yojanas wide.
दैत्यवर्यं समाहूय मयं प्रोवाच सागरः । पुरं जालंधरे पीठे कुरु जालंधराय वै
Summoning the foremost of the Daityas, Maya, the Ocean said: 'Build a city for Jālandhara on that seat at Jālandhara.'
अंभोधिनैवमुक्तस्तु चक्रे रत्नमयं पुरम् । प्राकारगोपुरद्वारं सोपानगृहभूमिकम्
Thus addressed by the Ocean, he constructed a city of jewels, complete with ramparts, gateways, towers, stairways, houses, and terraces.
यत्रेंद्रनीलसंबद्धप्रासादतल संस्थिताः । मेनिरे जलदोद्योगं तांडवस्थाः शिखंडिनः
There, on the palace terraces adorned with sapphires, the peacocks, mistaking the clouds' activity for a dance, began their own display.
