मृगयाशास्त्रविधितो मृगयेयं मया कृता । दर्शनादर्शनाभ्यां च धावताधावता तथा
According to the rules of the science of hunting, this hunt was performed by me, both by seeing and not seeing, by chasing and not chasing.
अवरोहात्परं स्थानं सात्विकानां प्रभिद्यते । राज्ञश्च मृगयाधर्मो विना आमिषभोजनम्
Beyond the descent, the place of the virtuous is broken; and the king’s unrighteousness in hunting is only without eating the flesh.
अथ रामवचनमाकर्ण्य सर्व एव प्राकंपयञ्छिरांसि
Then, hearing Rama’s words, all bowed their heads in trembling.
वाली बभाषे राममंजलिमस्तके निधाय नमस्ते राम शृणु वचनं मम
Vali spoke to Rama, placing his joined palms on his head: 'Salutations to you, Rama; listen to my words.'
शंखचक्रगदापाणिः पीतवासा जगद्गुरुः । नारायणः स्वयं साक्षाद्भवानिति मया श्रुतम्
'You are the teacher of the world, holding conch, discus, and mace, clad in yellow garments, Narayana himself in person—so I have heard.'
त्वां योगिनश्चिंतयंति त्वां यजंति च यज्विनः । हव्यकव्यभुगे कस्त्वं पितृदेवस्वरूपधृक्
'Yogis meditate on you, sacrificers worship you; you who partake of offerings to gods and ancestors—who are you, bearing the forms of ancestors and gods?'
मरणे चिंतयानस्य त्वां विमुक्तिरदूरतः । सत्वं मे दर्शनं प्राप्तो राम मे पापसंक्षयः
'For one who thinks of you at death, liberation is near; your presence has come to me, Rama, and my sins are destroyed.'
गृहाण बाणं काकुत्स्थ व्यथितो भृशमस्म्यहम्
'Take the arrow, O descendant of Kakutstha; I am greatly afflicted.'
अथ रामस्तथेति बाणमादाय वालिनमुवाच किमिष्टं दीयतां वद
Then Rama said, 'So be it,' and taking up the arrow, spoke to Vali: 'What do you desire? Tell me, and it shall be given.'
कपिरुवाच- यदि प्रसन्नो भगवान्मम सद्गतिं देहि
The monkey said: 'If the Blessed One is pleased, grant me a good destination.'
अयं सुग्रीवस्तथा रक्षणीयोंऽगदोऽथ तारा च मया पापिनापराधः कृतस्तत्फलमनुभूतम्
'This Sugriva must be protected, as well as Angada and Tara; I, the sinner, have committed an offense and have experienced its result.'
अथ रामं पश्यन्नेव वाली ममार स्वर्गं च गतः
Then, gazing at Rama, Vali died and went to heaven.
अथ सुग्रीवं राज्येऽभिषिच्य स्वयं वनं विवेश
Then, installing Sugriva in the kingdom, Rama himself entered the forest.
अथ तेन सहायेन जलधिसमीपं गत्वा क्व लंका क्व सीता क्व चारातिरिति सुग्रीवमाह रामः
Then, going near the ocean with that ally, Rama asked Sugriva: 'Where is Lanka? Where is Sita? Where is the enemy?'
अथ हनुमानाह प्रविश्य लंकां विचित्य सीतां सर्वतत्त्वमवगत्य युद्धं संधिर्वा कर्तव्यः तदुदधिलंघनाय किंचित्समादिशतु भगवान्
Then Hanuman said: 'Entering Lanka, searching for Sita, and understanding all the facts, either battle or peace should be undertaken. Let the Blessed One give some instruction for crossing the ocean.'
अथ सुग्रीवमाह रामः । कथमेतद्घटत इति
Then Rama said to Sugriva: 'How can this be accomplished?'
कपिरुवाच- मम वानरा भल्लूप्रमुखाः कोटिशः संति
The monkey spoke: Among my monkeys, there are tens of millions led by the chiefs of the bears.
एकं नियुज्य सर्वमाकलय्य यथायुक्तं तथा करणीयम्
By appointing one, let everything be assessed and then done accordingly.
अथ जांबवानाह । हनूमानेको गच्छतु बुध्यतु लंकाम्
Then Jāmbavān said: Let Hanuman alone go and observe Lanka.
अथ हनूमानगमल्लंकापुरं विचित्य सीतामशोकवनिकायामासीनां तथा च संभाष्य विश्वासं कृत्वा वनं बभंज वनरक्षकांश्च
Then Hanuman went to the city of Lanka, found Sita seated in the Ashoka grove, spoke with her, gave her confidence, broke the grove, and struck down the guards of the forest.
बद्धो रक्षसा लंकां दग्ध्वा उत्तरकूलं गत्वा रामं दृष्ट्वा वृत्तांतं कथयित्वा तूष्णीमतिष्ठत्
Bound by the demon, after burning Lanka, he crossed to the northern shore, saw Rama, reported all that had happened, and then remained silent.
अथ रामः सर्वैर्विचारयामास जांबवानुवाच रामेण लंका कपिभिर्विनश्यतीति नारदेन ममोक्तम्
Then Rama deliberated with all, and Jāmbavān said: 'Rama, Narada told me that Lanka would be destroyed by the monkeys.'
अथ सागरोत्तरणे यत्नतया स्थेयम्
Then, in crossing the ocean, one must stand firm with effort.
अथ रामः शंकरमाराध्य सर्वं निवेदयित्वा त्वदुक्तं करोमीति वचनमुक्त्वा शिवमभ्यर्च्य प्रणतो भूत्वा व्यजिज्ञपत्
Then Rama, having worshipped Shankara and submitted everything, said, 'I will do as you have instructed,' and, after worshipping Shiva and bowing down, made his request.

O great god, devourer of the great elements, cause of the great dissolution, adorned with great serpents, great Rudra, Shankara, supreme lord, three-eyed one, wearer of the serpent-sacred thread, clad in a hide, adorned with a garland of skulls of Brahma, adorned with bones from hell, smeared with ashes, beloved of the supreme Narayana, of auspicious deeds, first among the five Brahmas, five-faced, four-faced, known by the Vedas, easily accessible to devotees, difficult for non-devotees, supreme bliss and knowledge, destroyer of Pūṣan's teeth, severer of Daksha's head, taker of Brahma's fifth head, beloved of Parvati, praised by Narada, of auspicious deeds, Sharva, three-eyed, wielder of the trident, holder of Pinaka, matted-haired, bearer of many forms, bull-rider, shining like pure crystal, four-armed, wielder of many weapons, Dakshinamurti, lord, chief of the gods, bearer of the Ganga, destroyer of Tripura, resident of Shri Shaila, lord of Kashi, lord of Kedara, lord of Bhushana, Siddha, Gokarna, Kanakhala, Parvata, giver of the discus, remover of Banasura's anxiety, slayer of Mura, whose lotus feet are worshipped, adorned with the moon and Soma, all-knowing, full of light, pervading the universe—salutations, salutations to you!
एवं स्तुवतो रामस्य पुरतो लिंगमध्यकोपेतस्तेजोमयमूर्तिराविर्बभूव
As Rama was thus praising, before him, in the midst of the linga, a radiant form appeared.
अभयवानथ पुनः पद्मासनासीनमुमाधिष्ठितांकमीशमामुक्तसर्वाभरणं सुकांतिकिरीटिनं हैमवतीकटिस्पर्शं करद्वयेनाभयवरप्रदं तरंगितानेकदिशाभिः । पूर्णतेजस्विनं हासमुखं प्रसन्नवदनं ददर्श रामः
Then, fearless, he saw the Lord seated on a lotus, Uma on his lap, adorned with all ornaments, wearing a beautiful crown, his hands touching Parvati's waist, granting fearlessness and boons, shining in all directions, full of splendor, smiling, with a gracious face.
परमेशितारं ननाम बद्धांजलिपुनश्च दंडवत्पपात
He bowed to the supreme Lord with joined palms and then prostrated himself flat on the ground.
अथ रामं परमेश्वरोऽपि वरं वृणु त्वं वरदोऽहमित्युक्तवान्
Then the supreme Lord also spoke to Rama: 'Choose a boon; I am the giver of boons.'
राम उवाच- लंकां गमिष्यामि समुद्रतरणे उपायमेकं मम देहि शंभो
Rama said: 'I wish to go to Lanka; O Shambhu, give me a means to cross the ocean.'
