तेन पुण्यात्मना सार्द्धं वसेदेकासने ततः । तत्र भुक्त्वाखिलान्कामान्कल्पकोटिशतावधि
There, seated together with that virtuous soul, he enjoys all desires for hundreds of millions of aeons.
सूर्यलोकं ततो गच्छेद्द्वितीय इव चन्द्रमाः । तत्रामृतानि भुक्त्वा वै चिरं चन्द्रस्य सन्निधौ
Then he goes to the world of the Sun, like the Moon himself; there, having enjoyed ambrosial delights for a long time in the presence of the Moon,
पुनरागत्य पृथिवीं चक्रवर्ती नृपो भवेत् । पालयित्वा चिरं पृथ्वीं जित्वा वै सकलान्रिपून्
He returns again to earth and becomes a universal emperor; having ruled the earth for a long time, conquering all rival kings,
आयुषोंऽते च गङ्गायां सुखं मृत्युमवाप्नुयात् । भूयः स एवमारुह्य विमानं सुमहायशाः
At the end of his life, he attains a pleasant death in the Gaṅgā; then, ascending a celestial chariot, he becomes renowned with great glory.
पुरं भगवतो याति दैवतैरपि दुर्ल्लभम् । तत्र भुक्त्वाखिलान्भोगान्मन्वंतरचतुष्टयम्
He goes to the city of the Blessed Lord, which is difficult even for the gods to reach; there, he enjoys all pleasures for four cycles of Manu.
परमं ज्ञानमासाद्य दुर्ल्लभं मोक्षमाप्नुयात् । जाह्नवीतीरयात्रायां दैवाद्यस्य भवेत्पथि
Having attained supreme knowledge there, he obtains liberation, which is difficult to achieve; such is the path for one who undertakes the journey to the bank of the Jāhnavī by divine will.
पंचता सोऽपि परमं धाम गच्छेन्न संशयः । सत्यधर्मो नाम राजा धार्मिकश्च प्रियंवदः
Even if he dies on the way, he certainly goes to the supreme abode—there is no doubt; there was a king named Satyadharma, righteous and gentle in speech.
त्रेताद्वापरसंधौ च बभूव क्षितिमण्डले । विजया नाम महिषी तस्य भूमिपतेरभूत्
He lived on earth at the junction of the Tretā and Dvāpara ages; his queen was named Vijayā.
सुंदरी शीलयुक्ता सा पतिसेवापरायणा । सप्तवर्षसहस्राणि भुक्त्वा वसुमतीमिमाम्
She was beautiful, endowed with good conduct, devoted to serving her husband; having enjoyed this earth for seven thousand years,
कदाचित्प्राप्तकालोऽसौ सदारः पंचतां गतः । ततो यमभटैर्बद्धौ दंपती तौ भयंकरौ
Once, when the time had come, he, along with his wife, passed away; then the two, bound by Yama's terrifying attendants,
दुःखप्रदेन मार्गेण जग्मतुर्यममंदिरम् । तौ दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजोऽपि चित्रगुप्तमुवाच ह
Travelled by a painful path to Yama's abode; seeing them, King Dharma spoke to Citragupta.
एतयोः सर्वकर्माणि चित्रगुप्त विचारय । तेनाज्ञप्तश्चित्रगुप्तस्तयोः कर्माणि जैमिने
"Citragupta, examine all the deeds of these two." Thus commanded, Citragupta, O Jaimini, considered their actions from the root.
मूलाद्विचारयामास प्राह चेति कृताञ्जलि । चित्रगुप्त उवाच- एतयोः सकलं कर्म शृणु राजन्वदाम्यहम्
He spoke with joined palms: Citragupta said—"Hear, O King, I shall tell you all the deeds of these two."
शुभं वाप्यशुभं कर्म यदेताभ्यां कृतं भुवि । किंचिदस्या नयोपायं वदामि तदहं शृणु
"Whatever good or bad deeds have been done by these two on earth, I shall tell you some means for her—listen to that."
एकादा त्रासितो व्याघ्रैः कश्चिदेको मृगः प्रभो । वनाज्जीवनरक्षार्थमागतोऽस्य सभां प्रति
Once, O Lord, a certain solitary deer, terrified by tigers, came from the forest to this assembly seeking to save its life.
तमायांतं समालोक्य भूयोऽयं प्राप्तकौतुकः । जघने स्वयमुत्थाय खड्गेन तरसा मृगम्
Seeing it approaching, this king, filled again with curiosity, rose quickly and struck the deer with his sword.
जघान ह मृगं राजा शरणागतमप्यमुम् । तस्मात्सदारोभूपोऽयं दंडनीयस्त्वया प्रभो
The king killed the deer, even though it had sought refuge; therefore, O Lord, this king with his wife is always to be punished by you.
यावंति तस्य रोमाणि संस्थितानि कलेवरे । मन्वंतरसहस्राणि मन्वंतरशतानि च
As many hairs as were on its body, for thousands and hundreds of manvantaras,
कोटिकोटिकुलैर्युक्ता नारकी स्यान्न संशयः । शरणागतरक्षां यः प्राणैरपि धनैरपि
He will be joined by countless millions of families in hell, without doubt—he who fails to protect one who has sought refuge, even at the cost of his own life or wealth.
कुरुते यो नरो ज्ञानी तस्य पुण्यं निशामय । सर्वपापैर्विनिर्मुक्तो ब्रह्महत्यामुखैरपि
Hear of the merit of that wise man who protects one seeking refuge, even with his life or wealth: he is freed from all sins, even those like the killing of a Brahmin.
आयुषोऽन्ते व्रजेन्मोक्षं योगिनामपि दुर्ल्लभम् । यमाज्ञया ततो दूतैः सदारोऽसौ महीपतिः
At the end of his life, he attains liberation, which is difficult even for yogis to obtain; but by the command of Yama, that king with his wife,
असिपत्रवने घोरे स्थापितोऽत्यंतदुःखदे । असितुल्यानि पत्राणि यतस्तेषां च शाखिनाम्
Was placed by the messengers in the dreadful forest of sword-leaves, exceedingly painful; the leaves of those trees are like swords.
असिपत्रवनं प्राहुरतस्तद्वै मनीषिणः । स्थित्वासिपत्रविपिने युगकोटिशतानि च
Therefore, the wise call it the forest of sword-leaves; there, having remained in that forest for hundreds of millions of ages,
सदारो नरकं भेजे व्याघ्रभक्ष्याह्वयं ततः । निरयं तं प्रविशति सर्वोपद्रवसंयुतम्
The king with his wife entered the hell called 'food for tigers'; he enters that hell, filled with all kinds of torments.
भवेच्च भक्ष्यो व्याघ्रेण व्याघ्रभक्ष्यस्ततः स्मृतः । युगकोटिसहस्राणि स्थित्वा तत्र स भूपतिः
He becomes food for tigers and is known as 'food for tigers'; after remaining there for thousands of millions of ages, that king
सदारोऽजनि पापांते भेकयोनिं गतः क्षितौ । जातिस्मरौ ततस्तौ तु भेकीभेकौ सुदुःखितौ
With his wife, at the end of his evil, was born on earth in the womb of a frog; then, remembering their past births, the two frogs were very miserable.
तीरे तस्थतुरेकस्मिन्सततं कीटभोजिनौ । अथैकदा तेन पथा पुण्याहं प्राप्य मानवाः
They always stood together on a certain bank, feeding on insects; then, one day, by that path, some meritorious humans arrived.
गच्छंति जाह्नवीतीरं तांस्तौ ददृशतुर्द्विज । भेक उवाच- वर्षाभ्वि मोहाद्यत्सर्वं पापं कर्म कृतं मया
As they went to the bank of the Ganges, O twice-born, the two saw them; the frog spoke: 'Because of delusion in the rainy season, all the sinful acts I performed—'
अद्यापि कर्मणा तेन दुःखमावां न मुंचति । त्यक्त्वा शरीरं गंगायां मुक्ताः स्युः पापिनोऽपि च १०० 7.9.
'Even now, because of that karma, we do not escape suffering; even sinners are freed if they give up their bodies in the Ganges.'
तथाप्येवं विधं दुःखमनुभूयावहे कथम् । गंगायां त्यक्तुमिच्छामि संप्रत्येतत्कलेवरम्
'Still, how is it that, having experienced such suffering, we remain? I wish now to give up this body in the Ganges.'
