Placing the water from the head-kamaṇḍalu, and invoking fire with the three mantras, he performed the rites from invocation up to the bathing ceremony.
Then, taking the deity in the hollow of his hands to bathe it, he looked at the deity, but the monkey did not see the pedestal.
Seeing only the liṅga in his hands, seized by fear, the great yogi said: 'What sin have I committed?'
'This liṅga, without a pedestal, is in my hand; if the pedestal does not come, today my death is certain.'
'Now I shall recite to Rudra; then the Great Lord will come.' Thus resolving in his mind, he recited the Śatarudriya hymn.
But even then Maheśa did not appear; then the lord of monkeys cast Rudra down to the ground, and Vīrabhadra arrived.
'Why are you weeping, devotee? Tell me the reason for your sorrow.' Hanumān replied: 'See, this liṅga is without a pedestal—behold the heap of my sins.'
Vīrabhadra said: 'If the pedestal does not come to your liṅga, do not act rashly; I will burn the world if the pedestal does not come.'
'Show me the liṅga, whether the pedestal has come or not.' Then Vīrabhadra, seeing the liṅga, found the pedestal had not come.
Desiring to burn all the worlds, the mighty Vīrabhadra cast fire upon the earth, and in a moment the earth was burned.
Then, having burned the seven underworlds, he turned upward again and began to burn the inhabitants of the higher worlds.
Taking fire produced from his forehead eye with his fingernail, the Lord made it resemble a jambu fruit and held it in his palm.
'If the pedestal does not come for you, the worlds will be burned—there is no doubt.' Seeing that it had not come, the mighty Vīrabhadra—
The great sages beginning with Sanaka, knowing by yoga, came together to the excellent hermitage of Gautama and to Maheśvara.
Though they did not see the gods or others present, O twice-born, they praised with hymns arising from all the Vedas.
Om, reverence to that God of gods, to Him of pure radiance, of inconceivable form; reverence to Him, the lord of the gods; reverence to Him, the pure one, the secret of the Vedas.
Reverence to Shiva, the primeval god; reverence to Him whose sacred thread is a serpent; reverence to Him, the support of the bliss of the gods, the essence of the three Vedas, the point, the sustainer of the universe.
Earth, air, space, water, the moon, fire, the sun, and the self—these eight are the forms of Shankara; to Him, who is attained by knowledge, eternal, I offer reverence.
Hearing this hymn, Shiva, the bestower of Bhaga's eyes, said to Vishnu: 'Go, bring those twice-born here.'
Brought by Hari, they bowed to the god; Shankara said to them: 'For what reason have you come?'
The sages said: 'O god, in the twelve worlds heaps of ashes are seen; only this one forest remains—behold the destruction of the worlds.'
Sadashiva said: 'We have no doubt about the burning of the five upper worlds; but how has there been a rain of embers, or such a great sound?'
The sages said: 'Now our fear is from Virabhadra; he alone caused the rain of embers, as if desiring to quench his thirst.'
Then the god called Virabhadra and Bhava said: 'Why, O hero?' The hero replied: 'This was done because Hanuman did not have a liṅga-pīṭha.'
'To know the mind of the monkey, I did this great act.' Then the compassionate god restored things as before.
Though all the worlds had been burned, the Lord, the soul of the universe, recreated them as before, and then spoke to Virabhadra.
Embracing and smelling his head, Hara gave him betel; then Hanuman, O Lord, performed worship.
There, a forest-dwelling Gandharva with a vīṇā was present; Hanuman said to him: 'Give me your great vīṇā.'
The Gandharva said: 'I cannot give up my vīṇā; it is as dear to me as life.' The lord of monkeys replied: 'To me also, the vīṇā is as dear as life.'
Then, with a blow of his fist, the monkey knocked down the Gandharva, and took the great vīṇā, furnished with melodious strings.
