'There is none equal to Hanuman in the entire cosmic egg; the place inaccessible to the Vedas, gods, and others is indeed established in you.'
'O monkey, your state is the unmanifest of all the Upanishads; by means such as Yama and other yogic practices, even for a moment, your state is not attained.'
'The pure strength of great yogis in the lotus of the heart is in Hanuman; even after performing difficult austerities for millions of years—'
'The sages do not know your form, let alone your feet; truly, what a wondrous fortune it is if a fickle man or animal does.'
Even though I have placed your two feet upon my body and within the heart of yogis, it is not sufficient; for a thousand years, I have continued thus each day.
O Lord, though I have worshipped you with devotion, you have not revealed your foot to me; for in the world, there is a great debate—Shumbhu, beloved of Nārāyaṇa.
Hari is as dear to Śaṃbhu as you are, yet I do not possess such fortune; Sadāśiva said: There is no one as dear to me as you, O blessed Hari.
Only Pārvatī is equal to you; there is no other for me. Then, Gautama, bowing to the great god,
Addressed that immeasurable Lord, ocean of compassion, together with the gods: 'Midday has passed, and it is the time for all to eat.'
Then, having performed ācamana, the great Lord, accompanied by Viṣṇu, entered Gautama’s house and began preparations for the meal.
With jeweled rings, anklets, fine cloth, a shining girdle, many necklaces, a neck-ornament, sacred thread, and upper garment,
Adorned with dangling earrings of precious stones, a splendid floral hair-knot, anointed with fivefold fragrant unguents, armlets, bracelets, and jeweled rings,
Thus adorned, Śiva took his seat on the best seat, and seated Hari before him on a special seat; the two supreme gods sat facing each other, and Gautama gave them golden vessels.
He arranged thirty varieties of food, four kinds of well-cooked sweet rice, two hundred dishes prepared in various ways, three hundred mixed cooked and uncooked items, and a hundred of each kind of well-seasoned vegetable.
He gave twenty-five kinds of vegetables with ghee, fine sweetmeats, well-prepared soups, pomegranate, ripe banana, coconut, delicious dates, jambu fruit, priyāla, vikaṅkata, and other fruits.
Offering these and other such items as prescribed, the brāhmaṇa gave water for rinsing and said, 'Please eat.'
While all were eating, Gautama himself took a fine cloth fan and fanned Śiva and Viṣṇu.
Then the Supreme Lord wished to make a jest: 'O Viṣṇu, see how Hanumān, that monkey, eats.'
Seeing the monkey near Hari, Maṇḍaka threw food from Viṣṇu’s dish among the assembly of sages, even as Maheśvara watched.
He gave Hanumān his own leftovers of sweet rice and other foods, saying, 'By your command, O Lord, your remnants are not to be eaten.'
'It is unfit for me to offer you my food, leaf, flower, or fruit; whatever is offered to me should be cast into a well.'
'If not eaten, it is by your command; if eaten, it is by your grace.' Sadāśiva said: 'At the self-manifested Bāṇa-liṅga, resplendent as the moon...'
The consumption of food offered to Śambhu is to be regarded as equal to the observance of the Cāndrāyaṇa vow; its distastefulness at the time of eating is due to another story.
After eating, I will tell you—eat it without hesitation. Then, the sage Gautama performed the water purification.
With limbs flushed, very smooth, and exceedingly delicate, washed many times and thoroughly dried, he filled the water pots with water from the pond, which had been purified by being stirred with cleaned and rubbed sticks.
He covered a fresh sand altar on the riverbank with pure, very white fine cloths, then placed water jars filled with water on top; after placing them, he added a lotus stalk, a bundle of leaves, kankola, kastūrikā powder, and a garland as clear as sandalwood and moonbeams.
Again, for the fourth watch, he should purify with water and cloth, place the moon-knot, then add bakula flowers and likewise pāṭalā flowers.
Next, placing a cluster of śephālī flowers and water there, first ensuring the purity of the water, he should then wrap the mouth of the vessel with a soft, very fine piece of cloth and a delicate moon-shaped cover.
Then, placing the water pots in a shaded spot, where there is a gentle breeze and fanned with a fine fan.
Afterwards, he should sprinkle the vessel with water from the earth; having prepared it, men or women of noble stature may be present there, O king.
