श्रोतुश्च तूष्णीं मननं तूष्णीं श्रवणमेव वा । अन्यथा भारती क्रुद्ध्येत् तत्क्रोधान्मूकता भवेत्
For the listener, silent reflection or silent listening is required; otherwise, the goddess of speech becomes angry, and from her wrath, muteness results.
तस्मात्पुराणश्रोता च तांबूलादिसमर्पणम् । वक्तुश्च जीविकाकार्या स्वसामर्थ्यानुसारतः
Therefore, the listener of the Purana should offer betel and similar items, and the reciter should be given livelihood according to one's ability.
पुराणप्रक्रमे देयं सचेलोद्गमनीयकम् । सूक्ष्मांबरमथो वापि वस्त्रद्वितयमर्पयेत्
At the commencement of the Purana, one should give a garment with an upper cloth, or else two fine pieces of cloth.
आसनं तु महच्चित्रं रम्यमूर्जस्वलं मृदु । सुवर्णं वा तथा दद्याद्गो भू गेहादिकं तथा
One should also give a large, beautiful, comfortable seat, or gold, or a cow, land, a house, and so forth.
एतत्समस्तं विप्रेंद्रा दक्षिणामूर्तिना पुरा । शंकरेण मुनीनां हि भाषितं च दिवौकसाम्
All this was formerly spoken by Dakshinamurti, the foremost of Brahmins, by Shankara, and by the sages to the dwellers in heaven.
अथ ते मुनयः सर्वे तं प्रणम्यासनस्थितम् । पृथक्पृथक्च तांबूलं दत्वा शुश्रूषवः स्थिताः
Then all those sages, having bowed to him as he sat on his seat, each offered betel and stood ready to listen.
तेनापि कथितं सर्वं पुराणं सर्वसंप्रदम् । उपांताध्यायपर्य्यंतं श्रुतवंतो द्विजोत्तमाः
By him, the entire Purana, containing all teachings up to the end of the final chapter, was narrated and heard by the best of the twice-born.
दिलीप उवाच- कामगेन विमानेन सर्वसंपत्समृद्धिना । सर्वतः सुखयुक्तेन पुण्यस्थानमुपस्थितम्
Dilipa said: By a wish-fulfilling aerial car, endowed with all prosperity and happiness on every side, I have arrived at this holy place.
वसिष्ठ उवाच- नालं पृष्टं त्वया राजन्नितोप्यतिशयांतरैः । क्रीडमाना भविष्यंति येन तत्पुण्यमुच्यते
Vasishtha said: O king, what you have asked is not sufficient; there are even greater distinctions, by which, while enjoying, one attains that merit.
सुधाधवलितं कृत्वा शिववेश्मसमं ततः । स्त्रियो रूपविलासाढ्याः सर्वालंकारभूषिताः
Having made it white as nectar and like Shiva's abode, women endowed with beauty and charm, adorned with all ornaments,
नानासुगीतकुशला नानानृत्यविशारदाः । चतस्रोऽष्टौ षडथवा मर्द्दलध्वनिकाः स्त्रियः
Skilled in various sweet songs and expert in many dances, four, eight, or six women play the mardala drum.
वशिन्यौ द्वे आवजिक्यौ कोणिकाधमने उभे । लासिक्यस्तु चतस्रः स्युः संतुष्टैकाथ गायिका
There are two controllers, two who play the āvajikya, and both who play the koṇikā drum; there are four dancers, one satisfied singer, and one vocalist.
एका द्वे वा सुगीतज्ञेऽमुखरे हि प्रकीर्तिते । कोणवाद्यकृते द्वे तु तूष्णींभूताः षडष्ट वा
There is one or two who are skilled in sweet singing, called 'amukhari'; for the koṇavādya, there are two, and six or eight remain silent.
सर्वा रूपविलासिन्यः सर्वाश्चापतितस्तनाः । रतितंत्राधिकुशलास्तत एवाविशंकिताः
All are women of beauty and charm, all with full breasts, highly skilled in the arts of love, and thus without fear.
सुसूक्ष्मा वस्त्रवेषाश्च विद्युच्चंचलदृष्टयः । एतादृशीभिर्योषाभिर्येन नृत्यं हि कारितम्
Their attire is exceedingly fine, their glances flicker like lightning; by such women, the dance is performed.
एकस्मिन्दिवसे राजन्वत्सरान्सविमानगः । शतस्त्रीवीक्षितमुखो युवा बहुभिरर्चितः
O king, in a single day, accompanied by his aerial car, a young man, honored by many, with his face gazed upon by a hundred women, experiences years.
आनंदपोषसंपूर्णः क्रोधेर्ष्यादिविवर्जितः । पंचगंधविलिप्तांगः सचंद्रा हिदलाननः
Filled with joy and nourishment, free from anger, envy, and the like, his body is anointed with five fragrances, and his face is adorned with lotus petals and the moon.
सूर्योपमस्तु योषाश्च सर्वास्ता दशनान्विताः । सद्योविकसितामोदि पारिजातकृतस्रजः
The women, radiant as the sun, all possess beautiful teeth, and wear garlands of freshly blossomed, fragrant pārijāta flowers.
सर्वा विकसितारोहि रक्तसंधिकृतस्रजः । धम्मिल्ले वक्षसि तथा बिभ्रत्यः सुस्मिताधराः
All are adorned with fully bloomed flowers, garlands with red joints, their hair elegantly arranged, bearing them on their breasts, with lovely smiles upon their lips.
चरत्येतादृशीभिस्तु नृत्यगीतानुमोदितः । एवं विमानगो भूत्वा उषित्वा कालमक्षयम्
He moves among such women, delighted by their dance and song; thus, dwelling in a celestial palace, he enjoys an endless span of time.
पश्चाज्जायेत नृपतिरेवं कृत्वा पुनस्तथा । राज्यं स्वर्गफलं भुक्त्वा शिवभक्तो भविष्यति
Afterwards, being born as a king, having acted thus again, he enjoys the fruits of sovereignty and heaven, and becomes a devotee of Śiva.
शंभुरुवाच-। दिलीपाय वसिष्ठोक्तं मुनीनामंगिरोब्रवीत् । ते तथा कृतवंतश्च तौर्य्यत्रिकमुमापतेः
Śaṃbhu said: Vasiṣṭha spoke to Dilīpa as Angiras spoke to the sages; they too performed in this way the triple vow of Umāpati.
श्रुत्वा पुराणं पाद्मं च समग्रं सुखिनो भवन् । त एते ब्राह्मणा राम विमानवरमास्थिताः
Having heard the entire Padma Purāṇa, they became happy; O Rāma, those brāhmaṇas attained the best celestial palaces.
दृश्यंते खे च सुखिनः सदा मुदितमानसाः । एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं पुराणेषु विनिश्चितम्
They are seen in the sky, always joyful and content in mind; all this has been told to you, as established in the Purāṇas.
इतः परं च किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि राघव
What more do you wish to hear beyond this, O Rāghava?
ति श्रीपद्मपुराणे पातालखंडे शिवराघवसंवादे त्रयोदशोत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred thirteenth chapter in the dialogue between Śiva and Rāghava, in the Pātāla section of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
राम उवाच- क एष दृश्यते व्योम्नि सर्वाभरणभूषितः । विमानस्थो महादीप्त मध्याह्नार्क इवापरः
Rāma said: Who is this seen in the sky, adorned with all ornaments, seated in a celestial palace, shining greatly like a second midday sun?
दुष्प्रेक्ष्यः सर्वमर्त्यानां तस्यांके चारुहासिनी । अपरा श्रीरिव ब्रह्मंस्तथा पंचसुयोषितः
He is difficult for all mortals to behold; on his lap sits a beautiful-smiling woman, O Brāhman, and likewise five other women.
गायंति मधुरां गीतिं सुभ्रूभंगनिरीक्षणैः । मंदस्मितैः करतलशब्दास्फोटिकया तथा
They sing sweet songs, with expressive glances of their lovely eyebrows, gentle smiles, and the clapping of their hands.
क्वचिद्गलकृतैर्गीतैरन्योन्य करताडनैः । अन्योन्य मुखमालोक्य प्रलोभैर्गीतपूर्वकैः
Sometimes with songs produced in their throats, sometimes by striking each other's hands, gazing at each other's faces, and with enticing songs.
