Śaṃbhu said: Whoever listens daily to this supreme, virtuous narrative becomes freed from all sins and attains the presence of Śaṅkara.
Thus ends the one hundred and eleventh chapter in the dialogue between Śiva and Rāghava in the Pātāla section of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
Śaṃbhu said: Now I will tell another excellent story, called the tale of Pramadā, which was obtained by the daughter of Devarāta through the chanting of names.
Devarāta's daughter was a young girl named Kalā, exceedingly beautiful; she became the wife of Śoṇa, the wise son of Dhanaṃjaya.
Both of them were always devoted to righteousness and virtuous conduct; having obtained a treasure, they went to bathe in the Gaṅgā.
On the riverbank, as the current flowed, they went to collect clay; taking a lump of clay from the bank, they saw a great pot.
Within it was a silver ingot and a stone; then Śoṇa said to his beloved, 'What should we do? What action would be beneficial for us?'
His wife said: One should not undertake any action relying on a woman's opinion; nor should a woman do anything secret or unpleasant.
If wealth comes into view in the presence of a woman, she will deceive with such words.
We should not look at it, nor should we consider what is there; if we do not look at the wealth, there will be no trouble as a result.
If it is unknown to others, then how can certainty of knowledge arise? If it has not been seen until now, perhaps someone is secretly watching.
If there is no concealment, perhaps someone is present by illusion; if there is no illusion among people, then the field-guard is present.
If Bhairava is not present here, then perhaps a Brahmarākṣasa is; if not even he, then some great magician of kings may be there.
If the king does not know, then legal proceedings may arise; but if he does, then secret theft will occur.
If you are not vigilant, great harm will result; generally, among those who possess wealth, the desire for enjoyment arises.
From one enjoyment arises the desire for another, which destroys all observances; if a woman knows her own mind in this way—
A woman, when angered, attains independence and reveals her true nature; in anger she becomes trustworthy, but then the fault previously mentioned arises.
With one who is trusted, there arises familiarity, or perhaps estrangement or a change of heart; from familiarity in women, various kinds of behavior are born.
When a woman sees any man who is young and affection arises, from affection comes union, and from union, sexual contact follows.
When sexual union occurs repeatedly, a different kind of intimacy arises; whether by you before, or now by another, she is enjoyed.
What expectation do you have now, or for whom is her affection? A clever and very affectionate woman may go to another man.
If someone speaks to her, and you say to her today, 'Speak to me,' I will say everything just as it is; no other words will be spoken.
Thus, having become bold and, likewise, by changing her appearance, she takes some wealth and acts independently.
After enticing her, taking the wealth, she will cast it away; or, if her husband dies first, she will quickly enter the cremation fire.
In widowhood, she thinks in her mind, 'All the wealth will be for my religious purposes;' thus, when widowhood approaches.
Approaching the genital shrine, whether by day or by night, coming to a secluded place, she uncovers her garment and her vulva.
With her hand placed on her genitals, afflicted by sorrow, she spoke these words: 'What have you done, O vulva, or what sin have you incurred?'
'Or is it the sin of the penis entering you, or the sin committed by the agent due to neglect of service like mine?'
Then, when itching arises, she inserts her finger; performing various acts, the itch is then relieved by her mind.
Rubbing with her hands, striking it and opening up, repeatedly moving her feet, with her mouth open, she is greatly distressed.
