Lotus, water-lily, swing, feet, fan, yak-tail, trident, conch, discus, mace, bow, and chariot as well.
Trident, drum, sword, bull, bee-banner, Shiva, eight-petaled lotus, and other yantras likewise.
She fashioned them daily and served the bull-bannered one. Once, that courtesan arrived at the deity's abode.
A certain prison-marked man entered the temple of the deity. Seeing her there, he spoke these words.
The prison-marked man said: The courtesan is alone, I am young, but not old; the old, diseased, impotent, incapable, and poor—
A man who is short in urination, miserable, whom a woman abandons; one with stone hair, covered in filth, dull, and corrupted by foul odor.
A woman should avoid even a small misfortune from afar; therefore, grant me union with the courtesan and quickly revive me.
The courtesan said: We have heard that chastity is the highest virtue for women, bringing happiness to all castes here and hereafter.
When a courtesan is under someone's authority, she does not associate with another; she is renowned as chaste, so she should protect that.
Kārāṃkika said: If this is so, then death will come swiftly, without doubt. Then, having gone to the king's presence, he spoke thus.
It is improper to say, 'The courtesan is a courtesan, not a wife.' Having spoken thus to the king, he took some ashes from the fire altar.
Taking a little of it, he went to her chamber; seeing an opportunity while she slept, he placed his hand there.
With evil intent, he inserted the ashes into a fold of her garment; having done so, he went and spoke to the king.
O king, having gone out, I went to your foremost courtesan; awaken her and you should examine her entire body.
Carefully observe her garment, whether the ties are loosened or not; the king, having gone to the courtesan's house, followed Kārāṃkika's words.
He said, 'Let us see her while she sleeps; I will go, you may look.' But he replied to the king, 'This is not proper for me, O king.'
Instead, instruct her mother or father to view her; upon their seeing, everything will quickly become clear.
Then, brought by the king, her mother was ready to examine; at the king's command, she began to inspect the garment.
Finding the ashes there, the mother pressed them; from the pressing, the garment became damp, and the king asked, 'What is this?'
Nothing, O lord, nothing at all, said the courtesan's mother; but with many words, the king, suspicious, examined the garment.
This garment is damp with semen—look at it, he said; and those nearby, having seen, told the king, 'It is so.'
Then the king, having gone to his own house, spoke to the chief of justice: 'Immediately sever the courtesan's head, without delay.'
Her head must be shown to me within two hours; the chief, at the king's command, did so and presented it.
Vīrabhadra said: Thus you acted before, and today you have received the result; by the flame you are the speaker, the listener, the seer, and the one who smells.
You are wise, you know the essence, and you will become free from excessive anger. Shambhu said: Thus, Jvalamukha was born as a king devoted to Maheshvara, but lacking in forbearance.
Therefore, one who desires happiness here and hereafter should cultivate forbearance. Whoever listens daily to this most excellent and sacred account—
—will be freed from the bonds of sin and will dwell in the realm of Shiva.
Thus ends the one hundred and tenth chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of Shiva Worship,' in the dialogue between Shiva and Raghava, within the Patalakhanda of the glorious Padma Purana.
Shri Rama said: Tell me, O best of teachers, about the greatness of the name of Mahesha, the greatness of worship, the greatness of bowing, and the greatness of seeing.
O excellent one, tell me the greatness of offering water, the greatness of offering incense, and the greatness of giving lamps, fragrances, and other gifts.
