सूत उवाच- इति देववचः श्रुत्वा नत्वा धर्माधिपं ततः । पुनः पपात स इह परितुष्टमना द्विजः
Suta said: Hearing these words of the god, bowing to the lord of dharma, that twice-born, his mind well-pleased, again fell down here.
धर्मराजप्रसादेन ततस्तत्र महीतले । संसुप्तइव चोत्तस्थौ बंधुवर्गसमन्वितः
By the favor of Dharmaraja, then, on that earth, he rose up as if from sleep, surrounded by his relatives.
विधिमेनं द्विजो भूमौ वर्षेवर्षे च स स्वयम् । स्वयं च कारयामास माधवस्नापनं जनम्
That twice-born one himself, year after year, performed on earth the prescribed Mādhava bathing, and also had the people perform it.
यमब्राह्मणसंवादो मयायं परिकीर्तितः । तस्य माधवमासस्य पुण्यस्नानप्रसङ्गतः
This dialogue between Yama and the brāhmaṇa has been recounted by me in connection with the merit of bathing during the Mādhava month.
वैशाखमासे सततं हरिप्रिये स्नानं विदध्याच्च ददाति भक्त्या । दानं च होमं सुकृतं तथा बुधो हरेःपदं तस्य नदुर्ल्लभं कदा
Whoever, in the month of Vaiśākha, always bathes, gives offerings and oblations with devotion, and performs virtuous acts, O beloved of Hari, for him the supreme abode of Hari is never difficult to attain.
यःशृणोत्येकचित्तेनमाहात्म्यंमेषसूर्यजम् । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो याति विष्णोः परं पदम्
Whoever listens with single-minded attention to this glory of the Sun-born month, is freed from all sins and attains the supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
ऋषय ऊचुः - सूतसूत महाप्राज्ञ त्वयाऽतिकरुणात्मना । वैशाखमासमाहात्म्यं कीर्तितं पापनाशनम्
The sages said: O Sūta, Sūta, most wise and compassionate one, you have described the glory of the month of Vaiśākha, which destroys sin.
नियमा मधुहन्तुर्ये माधवे कथितास्त्वया । पूजनं स्नानदानाद्यं श्रौतस्मार्तविधानतः
The observances in the month of Mādhava, O slayer of Madhu, have been described by you—worship, bathing, giving, and so on—according to both Vedic and Smṛti injunctions.
यथा च माधवो देवः प्रीयते पापनाशनः । अधुना श्रोतुमिच्छामो ध्यानं तस्य महात्मनः
And now, we wish to hear how Mādhava, the sin-destroying Lord, is pleased; we desire to hear the meditation on that great soul.
कृष्णस्य भक्तवृन्दानां प्रियस्य भवतारणम्
He is the beloved deliverer of the devoted followers of Kṛṣṇa.
सूत उवाच- शृणुध्वं मुनयः सर्वे कृष्णस्य जगदात्मनः । गोगोपगोपीप्राणस्य वृन्दावनचरस्य च
Sūta said: Hear, O sages, all of you, about Kṛṣṇa, the soul of the universe, the life of cows, cowherds, and gopīs, and the one who roams in Vṛndāvana.
एकदा नारदः पृष्टो गौतमेन द्विजोत्तमाः । स तस्मै प्राह यद्ध्यानं तद्वक्ष्ये पापनाशनम्
Once, Nārada was questioned by Gautama, best of the twice-born; he then told him the meditation, which I shall now relate, that destroys sin.
नारद उवाच- सुमप्रकरसौरभोद्गलितमाध्विकाद्युल्लसत्सुशाखिनवपल्लवप्रकरनम्र शोभायुतम् । प्रफुल्लनवमञ्जरीललितवल्लरीवेष्टितं स्मरेत सततं शिवं शितमतिः सुवृन्दावनम्
Nārada said: One should always remember the beautiful Vṛndāvana, adorned with fresh, fragrant honey-dripping flowers, lush trees and tender shoots, and charming new blossoms entwined with graceful creepers.
विकाशि सुमनोरसास्वदनमंजुलैः संचरच्छिलीमुखमुखोद्गतैर्मुखरितान्तरं झंकृतैः । कपोतशुकसारिकापरभृतादिभिः पत्रिभिर्विराणितमितस्ततो भुजगशत्रुनृत्याकुलम्
Its interior resounds with the melodious chirping of birds—parrots, mynas, cuckoos, and others—delighting in the taste of blooming flowers, while peacocks dance everywhere, filling it with vibrant movement.
कलिन्ददुहितुश्च लल्लहरिविप्लुषां वाहिभिर्विनिद्र सरसीरुहोदररजश्च योद्धूसरैः । प्रदीपित मनोभवव्रजविलासिनी वाससां विलोलनपरैर्निषेवितमनारतं मारुतैः
There, the restless breezes ceaselessly serve the abodes of the playful women of Vraja, carrying the dust from the lotus ponds stirred by the waves of the Yamunā, daughter of Kalinda, and scattering the pollen of blooming lotuses.
प्रवालनवपल्लवं मरकतच्छदं मौक्तिकप्रभाप्रकरकोरकं कमलरागनानाफलम् । स्थविष्ठमखिलर्तुभिः सततसेवितं कामदं तदन्तरपिकल्पकाङ्घ्रिपमुदञ्चितं चिन्तयेत्
One should contemplate within it a wish-fulfilling tree, with fresh red shoots, emerald leaves, clusters of pearl-like buds, lotus-colored and various fruits, standing firm through all seasons, always attended by celestial beings.
सुहेमशिखराचलेउदितभानुवद्भासुरामधोऽस्य कनकस्थलीममृतशीकरासारिणः । प्रदीप्तमणिकुट्टिमां कुसुमरेणुपुञ्जोज्ज्वलां स्मरेत्पुनरतन्द्रितो विगतषट्तरङ्गांबुधः
One should remember, without fatigue and with a mind free from the six waves, the golden terrace shining like the sun rising over a mountain with golden peaks, where nectar flows, the jeweled floor gleams, and heaps of flower-dust sparkle.
तद्रत्नकुट्टिमनिविष्टमहिष्ठयोगपीठेऽष्टपत्रमरुणं कमलं विचिन्त्य । उद्यद्विरोचनसरोचिरमुष्यमध्ये संचिन्तयेत्सुखनिविष्टमथोमुकुन्दम्
There, on that jeweled floor, one should visualize the supreme yogic seat—a red eight-petaled lotus—and in its center, shining with the radiance of the rising sun, one should meditate on Mukunda, happily seated.
सुत्रामहेति दलिताञ्जनमेघपुञ्जप्रत्यग्रनीलजलजन्मसमानभासम् । सुस्निग्धनीलघनकुञ्चितकेशजालं राजन्मनोज्ञशितिकण्ठशिखण्डचूडम्
He is adorned with a garland, his complexion like a fresh blue lotus born from a cluster of dark rain clouds, his hair glossy, deep blue, and curly, and his head crowned with a peacock feather—charming to behold, O King.
रोलम्बलालितसुरद्रुमसूनुसंपद्युक्तं समुत्कचनवोत्पलकर्णपूरम् । लोलालिभिः स्फुरितभालतलप्रदीप्तगोरोचनातिलकमुज्ज्वलचिल्लिचापम्
He is adorned with a swinging, lovely son of the celestial tree, his ears decorated with upward-pointing blue lotuses, his forehead shining with a brilliant yellow mark, and his bow-like eyebrows flickering with playful bees.
आपूर्णशारदगताङ्क शशाङ्कबिम्बकान्ताननं कमलपत्रविशालनेत्रम् । रत्नस्फुरन्मकरकुण्डलरश्मिदीप्तगण्डस्थलीमुकुरमुन्नतचारुनासम्
His face shone with the beauty of the full autumn moon, radiant as the moon's disc, with eyes wide as lotus petals, cheeks glowing with the light of gem-studded makara earrings, and a high, lovely nose reflected in the mirror of his shining face.
सिन्दूरसुन्दरतराधरमिन्दुकुन्दमन्दारमन्दहसितद्युतिदीपिताशम् । वन्यप्रवालकुसुमप्रचयावकॢप्तग्रैवेयकोज्ज्वलमनोहरकम्बुकण्ठम्
His lips were more beautiful than vermilion, his smile gentle as the moon, jasmine, and mandara flowers, lighting up his face; his neck, adorned with a garland of wild coral flowers, gleamed with a captivating brilliance.
मत्तभ्रमद्भ्रमरघुष्टविलम्बमानं संतानकप्रसरदामपरिष्कृतांसम् । हारावलीभगणराजितपीवरोरुव्योमस्थलीलसितकौस्तुभभानुमन्तम्
Bees, intoxicated and humming, hovered around him; his shoulders were adorned with garlands of heavenly flowers, and his broad chest was decorated with rows of necklaces, shining with the Kaustubha gem like the sun in the sky.
श्रीवत्सलक्षणसुलक्षितमुन्नतांसमाजानुपीनपरिवृत्तसुजातबाहुम् । आबन्धुरोदरमुदारगभीरनाभिं भृङ्गाङ्गनानि करमंजुलरोमराजिम्
Marked with the auspicious Śrīvatsa, his shoulders were high and well-formed, his arms long, round, and strong, his waist slender, his navel deep and noble, and his chest adorned with rows of fine, dark hair like lines drawn by bees.
नानामणिप्रघटिताङ्गदकङ्कणोर्मि ग्रैवेयसारसननूपुरतुन्दबन्धम् । दिव्याङ्गरागपरिपिञ्जरिताङ्गयष्टिमापीतवस्त्रपरिवीतनितम्बबिम्बम्
He wore armlets and bracelets set with various gems, a shining necklace, a girdle, anklets, and a waistband; his divine body was tinged with celestial perfumes, and his hips were wrapped in yellow garments.
चारूरुजानुमनुवृत्तमनोज्ञजङ्घं कान्तोन्नतप्रपदनिन्दित कूर्मकान्तिम् । माणिक्यदर्पणलसन्नखराजराजद्रक्ताङ्गुलिच्छदनुसुन्दरपादपद्मम्
His thighs, knees, and shapely calves were graceful, his feet beautiful and radiant, outshining the tortoise in splendor, with nails like rubies, and his lotus feet were covered by reddish, jewel-like toes.
मत्स्याङ्कुशारिदरकेतुयवाब्जवज्रैः संलक्षितारुणकराङ्घ्रितलाभिरामम् । लावण्यसारसमुदायविनिर्मिताङ्गं सौन्दर्यनिन्दितमनोभव देहकान्तिम्
His hands and feet were marked with the signs of fish, goad, arrow, banner, barley, and thunderbolt, and their reddish soles delighted the eye; his form was fashioned from the essence of beauty, surpassing even the god of love in charm.
आस्यारविन्दपरिपूरितवेणुरन्ध्रलोलत्कराङ्गुलिसमीरितदिव्यरागैः । शश्वद्भवैः कृतनिविष्टसमस्तजन्तुसंतानसंनतिमनन्तसुखाम्बुराशिम्
With his lotus-like mouth pressed to the flute, his fingers danced over its holes, producing divine melodies; by this music, he brought joy to all living beings, becoming an endless ocean of bliss.
गोभिर्मुखाम्बुजविलीनविलोचनाभिरूधोभरस्खलितमन्थरमन्दगाभिः । दन्ताग्रदष्टपरिशिष्टतृणाङ्कुराभिरालम्बिवालधिलताभिरथाभिवीतम्
He was surrounded by cows whose eyes were fixed on his lotus face, moving slowly under the weight of their full udders, nibbling the tips of grass with their teeth, and their tails gently brushing the ground.
संप्रस्नुतस्तनविभूषणपूर्णनिश्चलास्याद्दृढक्षरितफेनिलदुग्धमुग्धैः । वेणुप्रवर्तितमनोहरमन्दगीतदत्तोच्चकर्णयुगलैरपितर्णकैश्च
Their udders, adorned with ornaments, overflowed with still, foamy milk, firmly streaming from their mouths; their ears perked up to the enchanting, gentle music of his flute, and their calves eagerly drank.
