सहस्रजिच्च राजर्षिः प्राणानिष्टान्महायशाः । ब्राह्मणार्थे परित्यज्य गतो लोकाननुत्तमान्
And the royal sage Sahasrajit, renowned, gave up his life for the sake of a brāhmaṇa and attained unsurpassed worlds.
न स्वर्गे नापवर्गेऽपि तत्सुखं लभते नरः । यदार्तजंतुनिर्व्वाणदानोत्थमिति नो मतिः
A man does not obtain such happiness in heaven or liberation as arises from giving relief to suffering creatures—this is our conviction.
सर्वेषु दातृजातेषु पुरा जातोसि भूपते । कर्मणानेन संख्यासु धीर धैर्यं नियोज्य च
In all classes of givers, O king, you were born in former times; by this very act, be steadfast and resolute.
दृष्ट्वा तवधियं धर्म दया दानं सुनिश्चलम् । अस्माभिरपि तूत्साहः क्रियते धर्म्मवादिभिः
Seeing your firm understanding, righteousness, compassion, and unwavering charity, we too, who speak of dharma, are inspired to act.
यदि ते रोचते राजन्न विलंबतया ततः । तदेभ्यो देहि तत्पुण्यं यातनादुःखदाहकम्
If it pleases you, O King, do not delay; give to these beings that merit which burns away the pain of torment.
इत्युक्तः स तदा देवं कृत्वा साक्ष्ये गदाधरम् । तेभ्यस्त्रिवाचिकं पुण्यं दयावान्विधिना ददौ
Thus addressed, he then made Gadadhara the witness, and, moved by compassion, gave them the merit of three fasts according to the proper rite.
दत्ते माधवमासस्य तस्मिन्नेकदिनोद्भवे । स्वकृते जंतवो याम्ययातनापरिवर्जिताः
When, on that single day arising in the month of Madhava, the gift was made, the creatures, by his act, were freed from the torments of Yama.
विमानवरमारूढाः सर्वे ते त्रिदिवं ययुः । प्रणमंतः स्तुवंतश्च पश्यंतस्तं प्रहर्षिताः
All of them, ascending splendid aerial chariots, went to heaven, bowing, praising, and joyfully beholding him.
नृपेण दत्तं तदवाप्य पुण्यं वैशाखमासैकदिनाभिजातम् । सर्वे ययुस्ते नरकाद्विमुक्ता दिवं विमानाधिगता हि चित्रम्
Having obtained that merit, given by the king and born of a single day in the month of Vaishakha, all, freed from hell, went to heaven, wondrously attaining aerial chariots.
नूनं विचित्रो भुवि भूतवर्गः संभूतभावो बहुधा विचित्रः । तथा विचित्रोऽखिलकर्मयोगस्तत्कर्मशक्तिप्रचयो विचित्रः
Indeed, the multitude of beings on earth is wondrous and their origins are manifold; likewise, the totality of actions is diverse, and the accumulation of karmic power is truly varied.
संस्तूयमानो मुनिदेवसंघैर्यस्तद्विशेषाधिकलब्धपुण्यः । परं पदं योगिवरैरलभ्यं ययौ जगन्नाथगणाभिवंद्यः
He, praised by assemblies of sages and gods, who had gained special and abundant merit, attained the supreme state, unattainable even by great yogis, and was honored by hosts of the Lord of the world.
इति श्रीपद्मपुराणे पातालखंडे वैशाखमासमाहात्म्ये । द्व्युत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the Padma Purana, in the Patalakhanda, in the section on the greatness of the month of Vaishakha, the one hundred and second chapter is concluded.
यम उवाच- एतन्माधवमासस्य समासात्किंचिदीरितम् । माहात्म्यं पूर्णिमायाश्च विशेषाद्द्विजसत्तम
Yama said: Thus, a summary of the greatness of the month of Madhava has been spoken, and especially of the full moon, O best of twice-born.
वैशाखमासे मधुसूदनस्य प्रियं य एनं पठतीतिहासम् । स याति कृष्णालयमाशुपूतः कल्पाननेकानिह मोदते च
Whoever reads this history, dear to Madhusudana, in the month of Vaishakha, quickly purified, goes to Krishna’s abode and enjoys many ages there.
धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यमिदं स्वस्त्ययनं महत् । स्वर्ग्यं श्रीदं सौमनस्यं प्रशस्यमघमर्षणम्
This is blessed, brings fame, long life, great auspiciousness, leads to heaven, bestows prosperity, happiness, is praiseworthy, and destroys sin.
इदं माधवमासस्य माहात्म्यं माधवप्रियम् । चरित्रं भूपतेस्तस्य संवादं चावयोरपि
This is the greatness of the month of Madhava, dear to Madhava, the story of that king, and our dialogue as well.
श्रुत्वा पठित्वा विधिवदनुमोद्य मनःप्रियम् । भवेद्भक्तिर्भगवति यया स्यात्पापसंक्षयः
Hearing, reading, and properly approving this, which delights the mind, devotion to the Lord arises, by which the destruction of sin occurs.
अथ गच्छ महीदेव देवलोकाद्यथेच्छया । निपात्य भुवि वैदेहं रुदंत्यद्यापि बांधवाः
Now go, O lord of the earth, to the world of the gods as you wish; having cast down the body on earth, your relatives still weep today.
विलप्यमानैरपि बंधुभिस्तैर्न यावदग्नौ तव तच्छरीरम् । प्रक्षिप्यते हंत जवैर्न तावद्याहि स्वयं सुप्त इव प्रबुद्धः
Though your relatives lament, until your body is placed in the fire, do not go swiftly by yourself, as one who wakes from sleep.
ममप्रसादादिह पुण्ययोगः श्रुतो यथावत्तमिमं विधेहि । विधानतो वै समये समंते समागमोंऽते भविता सुरैश्च
By my grace, you have heard here the proper connection to merit; carry this out as prescribed, and at the appointed time, at the end, there will be a gathering with the gods.
सूत उवाच- इति देववचः श्रुत्वा नत्वा धर्माधिपं ततः । पुनः पपात स इह परितुष्टमना द्विजः
Suta said: Hearing these words of the god, bowing to the lord of dharma, that twice-born, his mind well-pleased, again fell down here.
धर्मराजप्रसादेन ततस्तत्र महीतले । संसुप्तइव चोत्तस्थौ बंधुवर्गसमन्वितः
By the favor of Dharmaraja, then, on that earth, he rose up as if from sleep, surrounded by his relatives.
विधिमेनं द्विजो भूमौ वर्षेवर्षे च स स्वयम् । स्वयं च कारयामास माधवस्नापनं जनम्
That twice-born one himself, year after year, performed on earth the prescribed Mādhava bathing, and also had the people perform it.
यमब्राह्मणसंवादो मयायं परिकीर्तितः । तस्य माधवमासस्य पुण्यस्नानप्रसङ्गतः
This dialogue between Yama and the brāhmaṇa has been recounted by me in connection with the merit of bathing during the Mādhava month.
वैशाखमासे सततं हरिप्रिये स्नानं विदध्याच्च ददाति भक्त्या । दानं च होमं सुकृतं तथा बुधो हरेःपदं तस्य नदुर्ल्लभं कदा
Whoever, in the month of Vaiśākha, always bathes, gives offerings and oblations with devotion, and performs virtuous acts, O beloved of Hari, for him the supreme abode of Hari is never difficult to attain.
यःशृणोत्येकचित्तेनमाहात्म्यंमेषसूर्यजम् । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो याति विष्णोः परं पदम्
Whoever listens with single-minded attention to this glory of the Sun-born month, is freed from all sins and attains the supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
ऋषय ऊचुः - सूतसूत महाप्राज्ञ त्वयाऽतिकरुणात्मना । वैशाखमासमाहात्म्यं कीर्तितं पापनाशनम्
The sages said: O Sūta, Sūta, most wise and compassionate one, you have described the glory of the month of Vaiśākha, which destroys sin.
नियमा मधुहन्तुर्ये माधवे कथितास्त्वया । पूजनं स्नानदानाद्यं श्रौतस्मार्तविधानतः
The observances in the month of Mādhava, O slayer of Madhu, have been described by you—worship, bathing, giving, and so on—according to both Vedic and Smṛti injunctions.
यथा च माधवो देवः प्रीयते पापनाशनः । अधुना श्रोतुमिच्छामो ध्यानं तस्य महात्मनः
And now, we wish to hear how Mādhava, the sin-destroying Lord, is pleased; we desire to hear the meditation on that great soul.
कृष्णस्य भक्तवृन्दानां प्रियस्य भवतारणम्
He is the beloved deliverer of the devoted followers of Kṛṣṇa.
