That sage then instructed the king as prescribed, recited the essence of hymns, and had him recite the praises of Hari.
Whoever hears or studies this attains the full fruit.
Thus, made to perform the rite, the king, with purified heart, properly carried out the venerable Mādhava observance in that month, just as he had heard, with devotion.
He performed the morning bath, the offering of water for the feet, the arghya, the worship of Hari, and the food offering with devotion—the best among kings.
Just as one carefully observes the rules when giving gifts, and performs the prescribed rites at the beginning of Vaiśākha, so too, whoever, with devotion, does this every year, that foremost among kings attains the abode of Hari.
But in the other months, indulging in the play with women's breasts, intent solely on enjoyment, he acts again as he pleases.
He, overcome by desire, neglects religious duties and royal affairs, abandoning the month of Mādhava.
O foremost of Brahmins, even for the great, the force of desire is hard to restrain; it is inherent in the body, truly a beginningless succession of impulses.
Women, adorned with hair and collyrium, hard to touch yet pleasing to the eyes, burn men like fire flames burn straw.
Desire, fierce and residing in the body, is the enemy of men, as is fitting; composed of the smoke of delusion, sinful, it brings blindness to many.
Thus ends the hundredth chapter in the section on the greatness of the month of Vaiśākha, in the Pātāla-khaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
Yama said: Then, marked by the glance of Time, the king died, his body wasted away from excessive indulgence.
Dragged away by Yama's attendants, beaten again and again, he cried out loudly, remembering his own sins.
Then, when the messengers of Viṣṇu arrived, they struck my followers, declared him righteous, and placed him in a celestial chariot.
The king was taken to Hari's city, praised by groups of apsarās, his sins destroyed by the morning bath in the month of Vaiśākha.
But then, considering him devoid of righteousness, those divine messengers, by Viṣṇu's command, led the king, attentive, along the path to hell, not far away.
As he went, he again heard the cries of living beings, the various loud wails of those being tormented in hell.
Hearing the terrible screams of sinners being boiled, the king became amazed and deeply distressed, O Brahmin.
He said to the messengers: What is this dreadful screaming I hear? Why is it not heard again? Please tell me the reason for this.
The messengers said: There are creatures who have abandoned all bounds, sinners devoid of good conduct, cast into terrible hells such as Tāmisra.
Those who have committed sins, after giving up their bodies, follow the path to Yama and suffer terrible pain.
Dragged here and there by Yama's fierce men, fallen into darkness, they are devoured by exceedingly dreadful beings.
By dogs, jackals, flesh-eaters, crows, vultures, and the like; by fire-mouthed wolves and tigers, by serpents and scorpions and others—
They are burned by fire, pierced by thorns, torn apart by saws, and tormented by thirst—
Afflicted by hunger and also by terrible hosts of diseases, they faint again and again from the stench of pus and blood.
In some places they are boiled in oil, in others beaten with clubs; in iron vessels they are cooked, and sometimes on stones as well.
Sometimes they eat vomit, sometimes pus and blood, sometimes excrement, sometimes flesh—horribly foul-smelling.
They are devoured by worms, and in some places by fire-mouthed creatures, among heaps of hair, blood, flesh, marrow, and bones.
Their bodies, reduced to corpses, are scattered and clearly consumed by worms, and destroyed by the mouths of crows, vultures, and great vultures.
In pits filled with foul-smelling, putrid water, among countless collisions, on blades and heated iron plates without oil—
