I declare to you, O King, the highest and most excellent benefit; as your priest, I share in both good and bad deeds.
On one side are all merits, for destroying the sins of the sinful; on the other, the month of Madhava, which is always dear to Madhava.
Killing a Brahmin, drinking liquor, theft, and approaching the wife of a teacher—these are the great sins declared by the sages.
Whatever is done by men in mind, body, or even by vow, the month of Madhava destroys all great and terrible sins.
Just as the sun destroys darkness, O King, so too does the month of Shri Madhava; therefore, observe it according to the prescribed rules.
Even the great and dreadful misdeeds committed from birth, O King, are abandoned by mortals; by the power of observing the month of Vaishakha, with its merit, they joyfully attain the city of Hari.
If even one person observes Vaishakha according to the rules, then, even if sinful by disposition, at the end they reach the abode of Hari.
Therefore, O King, in this month of Madhava, after bathing in the morning according to the rules, worship the enemy of Madhu.
Just as the husk from rice and the tarnish from copper are removed by action, O hero, so too are the impurities of a person destroyed by effort.
The great innate impurity of a living being, like that of rice, is certainly destroyed—there is no doubt—therefore, perform actions as prescribed.
Thus ends the ninety-ninth chapter in the section on the glory of Vaiśākha in the Pātāla-khaṇḍa of the illustrious Padma Purāṇa.
The king said: By your words, cool and pure as the water of the milk ocean, true and wondrous in their variety, I have been awakened.
You have made me drink the nectar, not born from the ocean, a medicine for suffering, O gentle one, which removes the disease of worldly existence.
Association with the virtuous, O brāhmaṇa, is said by the wise to bring joy to people, destroy sin, grant the medicine of life, and remove old age and death.
Whatever rare and desired things exist on earth, all these are attained by the association of the virtuous.
He who has bathed in the Ganges of association with the virtuous, which removes sin—what need has he for gifts, for sacred fords, for austerities, or for sacrifices?
For those who sink and rise in the ocean of existence, the supreme refuge is the peaceful, dharma-knowing saints, like a sturdy boat for those drowning in the waters.
The disposition I once had, delighting only in the pleasures of desire, O lord, has now, through your sight and words, become entirely changed.
For the sake of happiness in a single birth, a wise person would give up thousands of lives; and by a single birth, he accumulates merit for thousands of lives.
Alas! Absorbed in the taste of desire and longing for pleasure, I, foolish as I am, have done nothing for my own true benefit, O twice-born.
Oh, the delusion of my mind, by which, for the sake of women, my very self was cast into terrible, inescapable suffering, with misery as its result.
O blessed one, I am satisfied, having been instructed by your words; by your giving of teaching, you ought now to rescue me here.
Formerly, by the merit I had performed, I have been awakened by you, or especially purified by the dust of your feet.
O best of speakers, tell me the observance for the month of Mādhava, which you have described as destroying all sins.
What is the charity there, what is the bathing, who is the deity, and what are the observances? Tell me this, O sage among brāhmaṇas, so that I may be freed from sin.
Yama said: Thus addressed, the blessed Kaśyapa, treasure of compassion, spoke these righteous, auspicious words for the good of all, O brāhmaṇa.
Kaśyapa said: O King, with a mind steady in patience and discernment, one should not speak to the wise when not asked, nor to the base-minded or wicked.
If one who is engaged in evil is given good counsel, O King, then the full fruit of imparting knowledge is surely attained—of this there is no doubt.
One should not speak unasked to anyone, nor to one who asks unjustly; even knowing, the wise should act among people as if ignorant.
Yet, to students, sons, and those engaged in right action—even if unasked—one should speak what is beneficial and conducive to their welfare, if they are faithful.
