अग्निमाधाय परितः समूहेत्पाणिनोदकम् । परिस्तीर्याथ पर्युक्ष्य दत्वा इध्मं यथाविधि
Having kindled the fire, he should gather water with his hands all around, then sprinkle and purify, and offer the kindling wood as prescribed.
प्रोक्षण्यासाद्य द्रव्याणि प्रोक्षण्यैवाज्यसेचनम् । तप्तजांबूनदप्रख्यं शंखचक्रगदांबुजैः
Having approached the sprinkling vessel, he should sprinkle the materials, and pour clarified butter as an offering; (the deity) shining like heated gold, bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus.
लसच्चतुर्भुजं शांतं पद्मकिंजल्कवाससम् । स्फुरत्किरीटकटककटिसूत्रवरांगदम्
He should meditate on the tranquil, four-armed form, adorned in garments the color of a lotus filament, with a shining crown, bracelets, girdle, and excellent armlets.
श्रीवत्सवक्षसंभ्राजत्कौस्तुभं वनमालिनम् । ध्यायन्नभ्यर्च्य दारूणि हविषा सघृतानि च
He should contemplate the one whose chest is adorned with the Srivatsa mark, who wears the Kaustubha gem and a garland of forest flowers, and after worship, offer wood and oblations mixed with ghee.
प्रास्याज्यभागावाघारौ दत्वा चाज्यप्लुतं हविः । अभ्यर्च्याथ नमस्कृत्य पार्षदेभ्यो बलिं हरेत्
He should offer the portions of ghee and the aghara oblations, and then the offering soaked in ghee; after worshipping and bowing, he should present the offering to the attendants.
मूलमंत्रं जपेद्ब्रह्मन्स्मरन्नारायणात्मकम् । दत्वाचमनमुच्छिष्टं विष्वक्सेनाय कल्पयेत्
The Brahmin should recite the root mantra, remembering the essence of Narayana; after giving the leftover water for sipping, he should dedicate it to Vishvaksena.
मुखवासं तु सुरभिं तांबूलाद्यमुपाहरेत् । उपगायन्गृणन्नित्यं कर्माण्यभिरवाक्षरैः
He should offer fragrant mouth-perfume and betel and the like; always singing and praising with auspicious words during the rituals.
सत्कथां श्रावयञ्छृण्वन्मुहूर्तं क्षणिको भवेत् । स्तवैरुच्चावचैः स्तोत्रैः पौराणैः प्राकृतैरपि
He should listen to and recite sacred stories for a moment, even briefly; and praise with hymns, both elaborate and simple, from the Puranas and in common language.
स्तुत्वा प्रसीद भगवन्निति वंदेत दंडवत् । शिरस्तत्पादयोः कृत्वा बाहुभ्यां च परस्परम्
Having praised (the Lord) with 'Be gracious, O Bhagavan,' he should bow down, prostrating himself, placing his head and arms at the Lord's feet.
प्रपन्नं पाहि मामीश भीतं मृत्युग्रहार्णवात् । इति शेषान्हरेर्दत्ताञ्छिरस्याधाय सादरम्
He should say, 'Protect me, O Lord, who has taken refuge, fearful of the ocean of death and calamity,' and then, with reverence, place the Lord's remnants on his head.
उद्वासयेच्चेदुद्वास्यं ज्योतिर्ज्योतिषि चात्मनः । अर्चादिषु पदं यत्र श्रद्धावांस्तत्र चार्चयेत्
If it is time for dismissal, he should perform the dismissal, meditating on the light within the supreme light; wherever there is faith in worship and the like, he should worship there.
सर्वभूतेष्वात्मनि च सर्वात्मानमवस्थितम् । एवं क्रियायोगपथैः पुमान्वैदिकतांत्रिकैः
He should perceive the Supreme Self present in all beings and in himself; thus, by these paths of ritual practice, a person attains both Vedic and Tantric fulfillment.
अर्च्चयेच्च यतः सिद्धिं हरेर्विंदत्यभीप्सिताम् । तामर्चां संप्रतिष्ठाप्य मंदिरं कारयेद्दृढम्
By worshipping in this way, one attains the desired success from Hari; after establishing the image, he should firmly construct a temple.
पुष्पोद्यानानि रम्याणि पूजायात्रोत्सवादिकम् । पूजादीनां प्रवाहार्थं महापर्वस्वथान्वहम्
He should create beautiful flower gardens for worship, festivals, and the like; for the ongoing flow of worship and especially on great festival days and daily.
क्षेत्रापणपुरग्रामान्दत्वा सायुज्यतामियात् । प्रतिष्ठया सार्वभौमं सद्मना भुवनत्रयम्
By installing the deity, one attains union with the Lord in fields, markets, cities, and villages; through such consecration, one becomes sovereign over the three worlds, possessing a universal abode.
पूजादिना ब्रह्मलोकं त्रिभिस्तत्साम्यतामियात् । तमेव नैरपेक्षेण भक्तियोगेन विंदते
Through worship and similar acts, one attains the realm of Brahma, and by performing these three, one achieves equality with that world; through pure devotion, one realizes Him alone, without dependence.
भक्तियोगं स लभते एवं यः पूजयेद्धरिम्
He who worships Hari in this way indeed attains the path of devotion.
यत्कृष्णप्रणिपातधूलिधवलं तद्वर्ष्म तद्वच्छुभं । ते नेत्रे तपसार्जिते सुरुचिरे याभ्यां हरिर्दृश्यते । सा बुद्धिर्विमलेंदु शंखधवला या माधवव्यापिनी । सा जिह्वा मृदुभाषिणी नृप मुहुर्या स्तौति नारायणम्
That body, made pure by the dust of Krishna’s feet, is auspicious; those eyes, gained through austerity, are beautiful, by which Hari is seen; that intellect, pure as the moon and white as a conch, pervades Madhava; that tongue, gentle in speech, O king, continually praises Narayana.
मूलमंत्रेण कर्तव्यं स्त्रीशूद्रैरपि पूजनम् । श्रद्धया स्वगुरूद्दिष्टमार्गेणान्यैश्च वैष्णवः
Worship should be performed even by women and Shudras with the root mantra, faithfully following the path indicated by their own guru, and by others who are Vaishnavas.
इदं ते सर्वमाख्यातं पावनं माधवार्चनम् । विशेषान्माधवे मासि त्वमेतत्कुरु भूपते
All this, the sanctifying worship of Madhava, has been explained to you; especially in the month of Madhava, you should perform this, O king.
सूत उवाच- इत्येवमाकर्ण्य वचो विचित्रं पुण्यं पवित्रं विधिनंदनस्य । प्रणम्य बद्धांजलिराह राजा सकौतुकी भागवतप्रधानः
Suta said: Thus, hearing the wondrous, meritorious, and pure words of Vidhinandana, the king, foremost among devotees, bowed with joined palms and spoke with eagerness.
अंबरीष उवाच- समस्तभूमीवलयेश्वरोऽहमव्याहताज्ञो विबुधप्रसेवी । गोविंदपादांबुजदत्तचित्तः स्वचित्तसंतोषितभूमिदेवः
Ambarisha said: I am the lord of the entire circle of lands, with unobstructed command, served by the gods; my mind is devoted to the lotus feet of Govinda, and as the king of the land, my heart is satisfied.
विख्यातराजोचितवंशरत्नं निरंतरं धर्मरुचिर्यशस्वी । सौंदर्यशौर्योदयदानशीलः सुपुत्रवानस्मि जितारिवर्गः
I am renowned, born in a royal lineage, continuously inclined toward righteousness and fame; possessing beauty, valor, generosity, good conduct, blessed with sons, and victorious over enemies.
केनापि पुण्येन पवित्रबुद्धिर्जातोहमीदृग्गुणसंतश्रीः । इयं पुनः श्रीरिव पुण्यमूर्तिर्लब्धा कुतः कांतिमती च कांता
By some merit, I have become pure-minded, endowed with such virtues and prosperity; and again, like fortune embodied, I have obtained this radiant and beautiful wife—how did I gain her?
इदं मे सुकृतं सर्वं पुराजन्मनि चेष्टितम् । समादिश मुने सम्यक्सर्वज्ञोसि दयानिधे
All this good fortune of mine, all my actions in previous births—O sage, instruct me rightly, for you are omniscient and a treasure of compassion.
नारद उवाच- इयं रूपवती नाम वेश्यासीदन्यजन्मनि । सांप्रतं तव भार्या या सत्याचारातिसुंदरी
Narada said: In a previous birth, she was named Rupavati, a courtesan; now she is your wife, exceedingly beautiful and true in conduct.
वेश्याधर्मेण वर्तेत यथोद्दिष्टेन भाविनी । कुर्वती किल कर्माणि शुभानि द्विजशासनात्
She lived as a courtesan according to the prescribed way, performing auspicious deeds as instructed by the twice-born.
देवदास इति ख्यातो हेमकारो भवानभूत् । पूर्वजन्मनि वै तस्या रुचेर्भर्ता भुजंगमः
You were known as Devadasa, a goldsmith, in your previous birth; for her, you were the husband named Bhujangama.
इयं भवंतं भजते रुची रूपवती पुनः । व्ययार्थमयनं धर्मं स्थिता विज्ञानमुत्तमम्
Rupavati again worships you, O king, with steadfastness in righteous conduct and supreme wisdom, for the sake of spiritual progress.
आकर्ण्य चैकदा धर्मं वैशाखस्नानसंभवम् । चक्रे धर्मवती तोये स्नानं मेषगते रवौ
Once, hearing of the merit arising from bathing in the month of Vaishakha, Dharmavati performed a bath in water when the sun entered Aries.
