तर्पयेदुदपात्रैर्यो ब्रह्महत्यां व्यपोहति । वैशाखे मासि यः स्नात्वा प्रातर्नद्यां समाहितः
He who, having bathed with focused mind in a river in the month of Vaiśākha at dawn, offers libations with water vessels, removes the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa.
पूजयित्वा हरिं भक्त्या पुष्पैः कालोद्भवैः फलैः । पूजयेद्ब्राह्मणं शक्त्या पाखंडालापवर्जितः
Having worshipped Hari with devotion, with flowers and fruits appropriate to the season, he should also worship a brāhmaṇa to the best of his ability, avoiding those who are heretical.
तर्पयेद्वस्त्रगोदानै रत्नाद्यैर्धनसंचयैः । अन्यद्वित्तं यथाशक्ति स्तोकं स्तोकं समाचरेत्
He should satisfy (the worthy) with gifts of clothing, cows, jewels, and other accumulated wealth; and, according to his capacity, he should give a little of whatever other wealth he possesses.
पश्चाद्विनिःस्वः पुरुषो माधवे मासि माधवम् । पुष्पार्चनविधानेन पूजयेन्मधुसूदनम्
Afterwards, even if he has become destitute, in the month of Mādhava, he should worship Madhusūdana with the prescribed method of offering flowers.
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः पितॄणां तारयेच्छतम् । सजन्मशतसाहस्रं न शोकफलभाग्भवेत्
Freed from all sins, he delivers a hundred ancestors; for a hundred thousand births, he will not experience the fruit of sorrow.
न च व्याधिभयं तस्य न दारिद्र्यं न बंधनम् । स विष्णुभक्तो जायेत धन्यो जन्मनिजन्मनि
He will have no fear of disease, no poverty, no bondage; he is born as a devotee of Viṣṇu, blessed in every birth.
यावद्युगसहस्राणि शतमष्टोत्तरं भवेत् । तावत्स्वर्गे वसेद्वीर भूपतिश्च पुनर्भवेत्
For as many as one hundred and eight thousand yugas, O hero, he dwells in heaven, and again becomes a king on earth.
भूपतेर्विविधान्भोगान्भुक्त्वा चैव यथासुखम् । माधवस्य प्रसादेन माधवे लीयते ततः
Having enjoyed various pleasures of kingship as he wishes, by the grace of Mādhava, he is then absorbed into Mādhava.
शृणु राजन्प्रवक्ष्यामि समासान्माधवार्चनम् । वैदिकं तांत्रिकं वापि मिश्रकं पापनाशनम्
Hear, O king, I will now briefly describe the worship of Mādhava, whether Vedic, Tantric, or mixed, which destroys sin.
नह्यंतोऽनंतपारस्य नांतः पूजाविधेर्नृप । अथ संक्षिप्य चोच्येत यथावदनुपूर्वशः
There is truly no end to the worship of the infinite, boundless Lord, nor to the rituals of worship, O king; but now it will be concisely stated in proper sequence.
वैदिकस्तांत्रिको मिश्रः श्रीविष्णोस्त्रिविधो मखः । त्रयाणामीप्सितेनैव विधिना हरिमर्चयेत्
The sacrifice to Śrī Viṣṇu is threefold: Vedic, Tantric, and mixed; by whichever of these is desired, one should worship Hari according to the prescribed method.
वैदिको मिश्रको वापि विप्रादीनां विधीयते । तांत्रिको विष्णुभक्तस्य शूद्रस्यापि प्रकीर्तितः
The Vedic and mixed forms are prescribed for brāhmaṇas and others; the Tantric is also declared suitable for a devotee of Viṣṇu, even if he is a śūdra.
यथा स्वनिगमेनोक्तं द्विजत्वं प्राप्य पूरुषः । यजेच्च विधिवद्विष्णुं ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः
As stated in his own scripture, having attained twice-born status, a man, being a devoted celibate, should worship Viṣṇu properly.
अर्चयेत्स्थंडिलेऽग्नौ वा सूर्येऽप्सु हृदि वा द्विजे । द्रव्येण भक्तियुक्तेन स्वगुरुं तदनुज्ञया
He should worship (Viṣṇu) on an altar, in fire, in the sun, in water, or in his heart, O brāhmaṇa, with offerings and devotion, having received permission from his own teacher.
पूर्वं स्नानं प्रकुर्वीत धौतदंतोंऽगशुद्धये । उभयोरपि च स्नानं मंत्रैर्मृद्ग्रहणादिना
First, he should bathe for the purification of body and teeth; in both types of bathing, he should use mantras and the taking of clay, and so on.
संध्योपास्त्यादिकर्माणि वेदतंत्रोदितानि वै । पूजांते कल्पयेत्सम्यक्संकल्पं कर्मपावनम्
He should properly perform the duties of twilight worship and other acts prescribed in the Veda and Tantra; at the end of worship, he should make a firm resolve, which purifies the act.
शैली दारुमयी लौही लेप्या लेख्या च सैकती । मनोमयी मणिमयी प्रतिमाष्टविधा स्मृता
An image is said to be of eight kinds: made of stone, wood, metal, clay, painted, drawn, sand, or formed in the mind, or of jewels.
चलाचलेति द्विविधा प्रतिष्ठा जीवमंदिरम् । उद्वासा वाहनेन स्तः स्थिरायां माधवार्चने
Establishment is of two kinds: movable and immovable; the living temple is established by installation or by vehicle, and in the worship of Mādhava, the immovable is preferred.
अस्थिरायां विकल्पः स्यात्स्थंडिले तु भवेद्द्वयम् । स्नापनं त्वविलेप्यायामन्यत्र परिमार्जनम्
For an unstable image, there may be uncertainty; but on a flat surface, both options are possible. Bathing is for what cannot be smeared; elsewhere, wiping is appropriate.
द्रव्यैः प्रसिद्धैर्देवेज्या प्रतिमादिष्वमायिनः । भक्तस्य च यथालब्धैर्भक्तिभावेन चैव हि
The worship of the deity and images is to be performed with well-known materials, O wise one, and also with whatever the devotee can obtain, offered with devotion.
स्नानालंकरणं श्रेष्ठमर्चायामेव भूपते । स्थंडिलेष्वपि विन्यासो वह्नावाज्यहुतं हविः
Bathing and ornamentation are best for the image, O king; for flat surfaces, arrangement is proper, and in fire, the offering is clarified butter.
सूर्ये चाभ्यर्हणं श्रेष्ठं स्थंडिले सलिलादिभिः । श्रद्धयोपहृतं श्रेष्ठं हरौ भक्तेन वार्यपि
For the sun, the best offering is arghya; on a flat surface, water and similar things. What is offered to Hari by a devotee with faith, even if only water, is best.
गंधो धूपः सुमनसो दीपोऽन्नाद्यं च किं पुनः । शुचिः संभृतसंभारः प्राग्दर्भैः कल्पितासनः
What need to mention fragrance, incense, flowers, lamp, and food? One who is pure, who has gathered the necessary items, and who has prepared a seat with darbha grass facing east—
आसीनः प्रागुदग्वक्त्रो ह्यर्चायामथ सम्मुखः । कृतन्यासः कृतन्यासां हर्यर्चां पाणिना स्पृशेत्
Seated facing east or north, and facing the image, having performed nyāsa, one who has completed the gestures should touch Hari’s image with the hand.
कलशं प्रोक्षणीयं च यथावदुपसाधयेत् । तदद्भिर्देवयजनं द्रव्याण्यात्मानमेव च
One should properly prepare the water vessel and the sprinkling vessel; with that water, purify the place of worship, the materials, and oneself.
प्रोक्ष्य पात्राणि त्रीण्यद्भिस्तैस्तैर्द्रव्यैस्तु सादयेत् । पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयार्थं त्रीणि पात्राणि दापयेत्
Having sprinkled the three vessels with water, one should purify them with the appropriate substances; three vessels should be provided for the purposes of washing the feet, offering arghya, and sipping.
हृतशीर्ष्णा च शिखया गायत्र्या चाभिमंत्रयेत् । पिंडे वाय्वग्निसंसिद्धे हृत्पद्मस्थां परां विभोः
With the topknot placed on the crown and with the Gāyatrī, one should consecrate; in the lump (of earth) perfected by air and fire, meditate on the supreme power of the Lord abiding in the heart-lotus.
अण्वीं जीवकलां ध्यायेन्नादांते सिद्धिभाविताम् । तयात्मभूतया पिंडे व्याप्ते संपूज्य तन्मयः
One should meditate on the subtle vital spark at the end of sound, endowed with perfection; with that, pervading the lump as one’s own self, worship, becoming identified with it.
आवाह्यार्चादिषु स्थाप्य न्यस्तां गां तां प्रपूजयेत् । पाद्यार्घ्यस्नानार्हणादीनुपचारान्प्रकल्पयेत्
Having invoked and established that earth in the acts of worship, one should honor it; provide the offerings such as washing the feet, arghya, bathing, and arghya.
धर्मादिभिश्च नवभिः कल्पयित्वासनं हरेः । पद्ममष्टदलं तत्र कर्णिकाकेसरोज्ज्वलम्
Having prepared a seat for Hari with the nine virtues beginning with dharma, place there an eight-petaled lotus, its pericarp and filaments shining.
