Becoming a son, a brother, a father, or a dear one who gives wealth, he always behaves as a friend, yet is inwardly wicked.
He does not see any virtue, being cruel and harsh in appearance; he always speaks harsh words even to his own people.
He eats delicious foods, enjoys pleasures constantly, is always engaged in gambling, and has a desire for theft.
He steals property from the house, and when restrained, he becomes angry; day by day, he insults both father and mother.
Thus the wealth is diminished in this way, and he says, 'All the house, land, and so on, are certainly mine—there is no doubt.'
He harms his father and mother every day, with severe beatings, with pestles, and by cruelly pulling out their hair.
When the father or mother dies, he becomes extremely harsh and devoid of affection—of this there is no doubt.
He never performs the rites of śrāddha or charity; such are the dear sons that are born, O king.
O best of twice-born, I shall tell you about the enemy-son before you: in childhood and upon reaching youth, he always behaves as a son.
While playing, he strikes his father and mother; having struck them, he departs, laughing thus again and again.
He returns there again to his father and mother; he is always angry and reproaches them day by day.
Thus he always behaves in the manner of enmity; having struck his father and mother, then again—
Thus that wicked-souled one departs, due to the influence of former enmity; now, therefore, I shall explain how affection may be obtained.
One should show affection to the newborn; in childhood, through play and gentle striking; upon reaching youth, one should show affection to mother and father thereafter.
One should always satisfy both of them with devotion, with affection, with words, and with pleasant speech.
Upon their death, having learned from the elders, one should weep with affection, and perform all the śrāddha rites and the acts such as offering of balls of rice.
He, afflicted with great sorrow, indeed performs them and sends them on their journey; he who, with affection, certainly frees them from the threefold debt.
Because of this, what is to be obtained is given without doubt; having become a son, O wise one, truly by this method.
Now, beloved, I shall tell you about the indifferent one before you; he always behaves with an attitude of indifference.
He neither gives nor receives, nor does he become angry or pleased; nor does he depart, abandoning; such is the indifferent one, O best of twice-born.
Servants also are described, as well as cattle, horses, elephants, buffaloes, female slaves, and those bound by debt—these indeed.
Whatever has been taken by one, not by both of us, truly belongs to no one; in this way, no deposit was made by anyone in a former birth.
I do not favor anyone, not even for a moment, beloved, listen; nor is there any enmity with anyone, done in a former birth.
From childhood, O best of Brahmins, I have not abandoned my husband; knowing thus, be at peace, abandon unnecessary anxiety.
Nothing has been stolen by anyone, nor has anything been given by you again; how does wealth come to you? Be amazed, O lord, not distressed.
Whatever is obtained, is obtained only where the protector does not remain; knowing thus, be at peace, abandon unnecessary anxiety.
Whose sons, whose beloved wife, whose own kin and relatives? Who belongs to whom in this world? There is no true connection, O best of twice-born.
Deluded by the illusion of Māyā, people with sinful minds think: 'This house is mine, this son is mine, this wife is mine.'
What is seen as attachment in worldly existence is false, O lovely one; it is the bondage of the world.
Thus ends the eighty-eighth chapter in the section on the greatness of the month of Vaiśākha, in the Pātāla Khanda of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
