Taking his own wealth and producing great delight, he gives back to him what was previously entrusted, more than what was taken away.
O highly fortunate one, in this way, he gives him sorrow—harsh and life-destroying; such a son, possessing great qualities, is born to him.
Becoming short-lived, he meets with death, causing pain and departing again and again in this manner.
When someone laments, 'My son, my son,' at that time this one laughs, for who is truly a son, and whose son is he?
This sinful one took away my entrusted wealth; by the theft of my property, indeed, my very life has been taken.
In former times, with great and unbearable suffering, I gave that sorrow, taking away excellent wealth.
Thus ends the eighty-seventh chapter in the section on the greatness of Vaiśākha in the Pātāla-khaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
Sumanas said: I will tell you, in your presence, about the son connected with debt—he who, having taken a debt, indeed departs at death.
Becoming a son, a brother, a father, or a dear one who gives wealth, he always behaves as a friend, yet is inwardly wicked.
He does not see any virtue, being cruel and harsh in appearance; he always speaks harsh words even to his own people.
He eats delicious foods, enjoys pleasures constantly, is always engaged in gambling, and has a desire for theft.

Thus the wealth is diminished in this way, and he says, 'All the house, land, and so on, are certainly mine—there is no doubt.'
He harms his father and mother every day, with severe beatings, with pestles, and by cruelly pulling out their hair.
When the father or mother dies, he becomes extremely harsh and devoid of affection—of this there is no doubt.
He never performs the rites of śrāddha or charity; such are the dear sons that are born, O king.
O best of twice-born, I shall tell you about the enemy-son before you: in childhood and upon reaching youth, he always behaves as a son.

Thus he always behaves in the manner of enmity; having struck his father and mother, then again—
Thus that wicked-souled one departs, due to the influence of former enmity; now, therefore, I shall explain how affection may be obtained.
One should show affection to the newborn; in childhood, through play and gentle striking; upon reaching youth, one should show affection to mother and father thereafter.
One should always satisfy both of them with devotion, with affection, with words, and with pleasant speech.

Because of this, what is to be obtained is given without doubt; having become a son, O wise one, truly by this method.
Now, beloved, I shall tell you about the indifferent one before you; he always behaves with an attitude of indifference.
He neither gives nor receives, nor does he become angry or pleased; nor does he depart, abandoning; such is the indifferent one, O best of twice-born.
