On the bright seventh day of Vaishakha, long ago, Jahnu, out of anger, drank up the Ganga, and then released her again from his right ear.
On that day, one should worship the goddess Ganga, adorned with the girdle of the sky; whoever bathes properly according to the rules is truly blessed and meritorious.
Whoever, according to the proper rites, offers oblations to the gods and ancestors in her, the mortal Ganga, sees directly the Ganga herself, purified from all sin.
There is no month equal to Madhava, nor any river like the Ganga; this rare conjunction is attained only through devotion to Hari.
Born from the water at Vishnu’s feet, come down from the world of Brahma, she flows tirelessly in three streams, purifying the three worlds.
She is the ladder to ascent to heaven, the constant bringer of joy, the remover of countless sins, and the savior from misfortune.
She who dwells in the matted locks of the glorious Mahesha, destroyer of suffering, who ends the playful delights of those devoted to her.
She brings liberation to the lineage of Sagara, upholds righteousness, moves through the three paths, the goddess who adorns the worlds.
By sight, touch, bathing, praise, meditation, and service, she purifies thousands of people, both virtuous and sinful.
Those who utter 'Ganga, Ganga' at the three junctions of the day, even from afar, she destroys the sins accumulated over three lifetimes.
A person who remembers Ganga from thousands of yojanas away, even if burdened by evil deeds, attains the supreme state.
Especially rare on the seventh day of the bright fortnight in Vaishakha, she is attained by the grace of the world's protector, Hari, and the Brahmin.
No month equals Madhava, nor any lord equals Madhava, for he rescues those sinking in the ocean of misfortune.
Whatever is given, recited, offered, or bathed with devotion in the month of Madhava, O king, becomes inexhaustible merit, multiplied by hundreds of millions.
As Narayana, Hari, is the universal soul among gods, as Gayatri is among chants, so Jahnavi is among rivers.
As Uma is foremost among women, as the sun is among those who shine, as health is among gains, so is the Brahmin among bipeds.
As benevolence is the highest among virtues, as the Veda is among knowledge, as Om is among mantras, so is self-contemplation among meditations.
As truth and adherence to one's own duty are supreme among austerities, as purity of wealth is among purities, as fearlessness is among gifts.
As the destruction of greed is regarded as the chief virtue among qualities, so Madhava is considered the best among months.
Whatever rites, sacrifices, gifts, fasting, austerity, study, worship, and the like are performed then, their fruit is considered imperishable.
At the end of Vaishakha, sins, darkness caused by the sun, malice, and deceit depart, and virtuous deeds prevail.
Whatever is done in Kartika month when the sun is in Libra—bathing, giving, and so forth—O king, its merit is doubled.
Therefore, when the sun is in Capricorn in Magha, the merit is multiplied a thousandfold; when the sun is in Aries in Vaishakha, it is multiplied by hundreds.
Blessed and virtuous are those people who, in the month of Vaishakha, bathe in the morning according to the rite and worship the enemy of Madhu.
Bathing in the morning during Vaiśākha, performing sacrifices, giving gifts, fasting, eating consecrated food, and practicing celibacy — all these destroy great sins.
Again, in the Kali age, this will become a secret, O King, because the glory of Mādhava in this month surpasses even the Aśvamedha and other great rites.
The meritorious Aśvamedha sacrifice is not performed in the Kali age; this observance of Mādhava month is declared to be equal to the horse sacrifice.
The merit of the Aśvamedha, which grants heaven and liberation, will not be known in Kali by people whose minds are clouded by sin.
Such sinful people, bound by worldly inclinations, must go to the ocean of hell; therefore, the practice established by him is rare in this world.
Thus ends the eighty-fifth chapter in the section on the greatness of the month of Vaiśākha in the Pātāla-khaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
