प्रातश्च बोधितो मात्रा तल्पादुत्थाय सत्वरः । कृत्वा कृष्णो दंतकाष्ठं बलदेवसमन्वितः
In the morning, awakened by his mother, Kṛṣṇa quickly rises from his couch, cleans his teeth with a twig, accompanied by Balarāma.
मात्रानुमोदितो याति गोशालां सखिभिर्वृतः । राधापि बोधिता विप्र वयस्याभिः स्वतल्पतः
Permitted by his mother, he goes to the cowshed, surrounded by his friends; and Rādhā, too, O brāhmaṇa, is awakened by her companions from her own couch.
उत्थाय दंतकाष्ठादि कृत्वाभ्यंगं समाचरेत् । स्नानवेदीं ततो गत्वा स्नापिता सा निजालिभिः
Rising, she cleans her teeth and performs anointing; then, going to the bathing place, she is bathed by her own friends.
भूषागृहे व्रजेत्तत्र वयस्या भूषयंत्यपि । भूषणैर्विविधैर्दिव्यैर्गंधमाल्यानुलेपनैः
She goes to the ornament room, where her friends adorn her with various divine ornaments, fragrant garlands, and unguents.
ततः सखीजनैस्तस्याः श्वश्रूं संप्रार्थ्य यत्नतः । कर्तुमाहूयतेस्वन्नं ससखी सा यशोदया
Then, at the earnest request of her friends, she invited her mother-in-law with great care, and together with her companions and Yaśodā, she was called to prepare food.
नारद उवाच- कथमाहूयते देवि पाकार्थं तु यशोदया । सतीषु पाककर्त्रीषु रोहिणीप्रमुखास्वपि
Nārada said: O goddess, how is it that Yaśodā calls her to cook, even though there are virtuous women like Rohiṇī and others who are skilled in cooking?
वृंदोवाच- पूर्वं दुर्वाससा दत्तो वरस्तस्यै महामुने । इति कात्यायनी वक्त्राच्छ्रुतमासीन्मया पुरा
Vṛndā said: Previously, the sage Durvāsas granted her a boon, O great sage; this I once heard from the lips of Kātyāyanī.
त्वया यत्पच्यते देवि तदन्नं मदनुग्रहात् । मिष्टं स्यादमृतस्पर्द्धि भोक्तुरायुष्करं तथा
O goddess, whatever food is cooked by you, by my grace, it will be delicious, rivaling nectar, and will grant long life to the one who eats it.
इत्याह्वयति तां नित्यं यशोदा पुत्रवत्सला । आयुष्मान्मे भवेत्पुत्रः स्वादुलोभात्तथा सती
Thus, Yaśodā, who is fond of her son, calls her every day, wishing, 'May my son be long-lived,' and also out of desire for sweet tastes.
श्रुत्वानुमोदिता हृष्टा सापि नंदालयं व्रजेत् । ससखीप्रकरा तत्र गत्वा पाकं करोति च
Hearing this, she joyfully consents and goes to Nanda's house, accompanied by her group of friends, and there she prepares the food.
कृष्णोऽपि दुग्ध्वा गाः काश्चिद्दोहयित्वा जनैः पराः । आगच्छति पितुर्वाक्यात्स्वगृहं सखिभिर्वृतः
Kṛṣṇa, too, after milking some cows himself and having others milked by the people, comes home at his father's command, surrounded by his friends.
अभ्यंगमर्दनं कृत्वा दासैः संस्नापितो मुदा । धौतवस्त्रधरः स्रग्वी चंदनाक्तकलेवरः
After being massaged and bathed by the servants with joy, he puts on clean garments, wears a garland, and his body is anointed with sandalwood paste.
द्विफालबद्धचिकुरैर्ग्रीवा भालोपरिस्फुरन् । चंद्राकारस्फुरद्भालतिलकालकरंजितः
With hair tied in two knots, his neck and forehead shining, a crescent-shaped tilaka gleaming on his brow, adorned with black curls.
कंकणांगदकेयूर रत्नमुद्रा लसत्करः । मुक्ताहारस्फुरद्वक्षा मकराकृतिकुंडलः
His hands shine with bracelets, armlets, bangles, and jeweled rings; a pearl necklace gleams on his chest, and he wears earrings shaped like makaras.
मुहुराकारितो मात्रा प्रविशेद्भोजनालयम् । अवलंब्य करं सख्युर्बलदेवमनुव्रतः
Repeatedly called by his mother, he enters the dining hall, holding the hand of his friend Baladeva, faithfully following him.
भुंक्तेऽथ विविधान्नानि भ्रात्रा च सखिभिर्वृतः । हासयन्विविधैर्हास्यैः सखींस्तैर्हसति स्वयम्
Then, surrounded by his brother and friends, he eats various foods, making his companions laugh with many jokes, and he himself laughs with them.
इत्थं भुक्त्वा तथाचम्य दिव्यखट्वोपरि क्षणम् । विश्रम्य सेवकैर्दत्तं तांबूलं विभजन्नदन्
Having eaten in this way and rinsed his mouth, he rests for a moment on a divine couch, then, as the servants offer betel leaves, he distributes and enjoys them.
गोपवेषधरः कृष्णो धेनुवृंदपुरस्सरः । व्रजवासिजनैः प्रीत्या सर्वैरनुगतः पथि
Kṛṣṇa, dressed as a cowherd, with a herd of cows in front, is followed on the path by all the residents of Vraja with affection.
पितरं मातरं नत्वा नेत्रांते नापितं गणम् । यथायोग्यं तथा चान्यान्विनिवर्त्य वनं व्रजेत्
After bowing to his father and mother, and to the barber and his group at the doorway, he takes leave of the others as appropriate and goes to the forest.
वनं प्रविश्य सखिभिः क्रीडयित्वा क्षणं ततः । विहारैर्विविधैस्तत्र वने विक्रीडते मुदा
Entering the forest, he plays for a while with his friends, and there, with various amusements, he joyfully sports in the woods.
वंचयित्वा ततः सर्वान्द्वित्रैः प्रियसखैर्वृतः । संकेतकं व्रजेद्धर्षात्प्रियासंदर्शनोत्सुकः
Then, deceiving all the others, and accompanied by two or three dear friends, he boldly goes to the appointed meeting place, eager to see his beloved.
सापि कृष्णं वनं यातं दृष्ट्वा स्वं गृहमागता । सूर्यादिपूजाव्याजेन कुसुमाहृतये तथा
She too, seeing that Kṛṣṇa has gone to the forest, returns to her own house, on the pretext of worshipping the sun and others, and to gather flowers.
वंचयित्वा गुरून्याति प्रियसंगेच्छया वनम् । इत्थं तौ बहुयत्नेन मिलित्वा कानने ततः
Deceiving their elders, he goes to the forest out of desire for beloved company; thus, after much effort, the two meet there in the woods.
विहारैर्विविधैस्तत्र दिनं विक्रीडतो मुदा । दोलायां च समारूढौ सखिभिर्दोलितौ क्वचित्
There, they spend the day joyfully engaged in various pastimes, sometimes both mounted together on a swing, rocked by their friends.
क्वापि वेणुं करस्रस्तं प्रिययापह्नुतं हरिः । अन्वेषयन्नुपालब्धो विप्रलब्धप्रियागणैः
At times, Hari searches for his flute, which his beloved has slyly hidden after it slipped from his hand, but he is teased and deceived by her playful companions.
हसितैर्बहुधा ताभिर्हासितस्तत्र तिष्ठति । वसंतवायुना जुष्टं वनखण्डं मुदा क्वचित्
There, he stands, laughed at in many ways by those women, while in some delightful forest grove graced by the spring breeze.
प्रविश्य चंदनांभोभिः कुंकुमादिजलैरपि । निषिंचतो यंत्रमुक्तैस्तत्पंकैर्लिंपतो मिथः
Entering, they anoint each other with sandalwood water and saffron-infused liquids, smearing one another with those fragrant pastes released from their vessels.
सख्योऽप्येवं निषिंचंति ताश्च तौ सिंचतः पुनः । वसंतवायुजुष्टेषु वनखंडेषु सर्वतः
The friends likewise sprinkle them, and again those two sprinkle each other, throughout all the forest groves filled with the spring breeze.
तत्तत्कालोचितैर्नानाविहारैः सगणौ द्विज । श्रांतौ क्वचिद्वृक्षमूलमासाद्य मुनिसत्तम
O twice-born, accompanied by their groups, they enjoy various timely amusements; sometimes, exhausted, they reach the foot of a tree, O best of sages.
उपविश्यासने दिव्ये मधुपानं प्रचक्रतुः । ततो मधुमदोन्मत्तौ निद्रया मीलितेक्षणौ
Seated on a divine seat, they partake of honeyed wine; then, intoxicated by the sweetness of the drink, their eyes grow heavy with sleep.
