प्रतिमां वा महाभागे तस्य पुण्यं न गण्यते । दमनारोपणं कृत्वा श्रीविष्णौ च समर्पयेत्
Or the image, O noble one, his merit cannot be measured; having performed the placing of damana grass, he should offer it to Shri Vishnu,
वैशाखे श्रावणे भाद्रे कर्तव्यं वा तदर्पणम् । पूर्वेपूर्वे तु वातस्थे दमनादिषु कर्मसु
In Vaishakha, Shravana, or Bhadra, that offering should be made; in the earlier months, in the rituals involving damana and the like, when the wind is present,
प्रकर्तव्यं विधानेन अन्यथा निष्फलं भवेत् । वैशाखे च तृतीयायां जलमध्ये विशेषतः
It should be performed according to the prescribed method; otherwise, it becomes fruitless. Especially on the third day of Vaishakha, in water,
अथवा मंडले कुर्यान्मंडपे वा बृहद्वने । सुगंधचंदनेनांगं सुपुष्टं च दिनेदिने
Or one may do so in a circle, or in a pavilion, or in a great forest; daily, the body should be anointed with fragrant sandalwood,
यथाप्रयत्नतः कुर्यात्कृशांगस्येव पुष्टिदम् । चंदनागुरु ह्रीबेर कृष्णकुंकुम रोचना
One should do so with as much effort as possible, as nourishment for a body that is thin; sandalwood, aguru, spikenard, Krishna-kumkuma, and yellow pigment,
जटामांसी मुरा चैव विष्णोर्गंधाष्टकं विदुः । तैस्तैर्गंधयुतैश्चापि विष्णोरंगानि लेपयेत्
Jatamansi and mura—these are known as the eight fragrances of Vishnu; with these various scents, one should anoint the limbs of Vishnu.
धृष्टं च तुलसीकाष्ठं कर्पूरागुरुयोगतः । अथवा केसरैर्योज्यं हरिचंदनमुच्यते
Tulasi wood, when combined with camphor and agarwood, or alternatively with saffron, is called harichandana.
यात्राकाले च ये कृष्णं भक्त्या पश्यंति मानवाः । न तेषां पुनरावृत्तिः कल्पकोटिशतैरपि
Those people who, during a pilgrimage, behold Krishna with devotion, do not return to worldly existence, even after hundreds of millions of kalpas.
सुगंधमिश्रितैस्तोयैर्देवदेवं गलंति ये । अथवा पुष्पमध्ये तु स्थापयेज्जगदीश्वरम्
Those who offer water mixed with fragrant substances to the Lord of gods, or alternatively place the Lord of the universe amidst flowers, are praised.
वृंदावनं तत्र गत्वा उपस्कृत्य फलानि च । विष्णुभक्तेन योग्येन भोजयेत्तदशेषतः
Having gone to Vrindavana and prepared fruits, a suitable devotee of Vishnu should offer them completely.
नारिकेलफलं बीजकोशं चोद्धृत्य दापयेत् । घोंटाफलं च पनसं कोशमुद्धृत्य दापयेत्
One should remove the seed kernel from a coconut and offer it; likewise, the kernel from a jackfruit and a panasa fruit should be removed and offered.
दध्ना विमिश्रितं चान्नं घृतेनाप्लुत्य दापयेत् । पाचितं पिष्टकं पूपमष्टादशघृतेन च
Food mixed with curd and soaked in ghee should be offered; cooked cakes and pastries with eighteen kinds of ghee as well.
तैलैश्च तिलसंमिश्रैः फलं पक्वं प्रदापयेत् । यद्यदेवात्मनः प्रीतं तत्तदीशाय दापयेत्
Ripe fruit mixed with sesame oil should be given; whatever pleases oneself, that should be offered to the Lord.
दत्वा नैवेद्यवस्त्रादि नाददीत कथंचन । त्यक्तं च विष्णुमुद्दिश्य तद्भक्तेभ्यो विशेषतः
After offering food, cloth, and other items as naivedya, one should not take them back in any way; what is relinquished for Vishnu should especially be given to his devotees.
इति ते कथितं किंचित्समासेन महेश्वरि । गोपनीयं प्रयत्नेन स्वयोनिरिव पार्वति
Thus, a little has been told to you in brief, O great goddess; it should be carefully kept secret, just as one's own origin, O Parvati.
श्रीकृष्णरूपगुणवर्णन शास्त्रवर्गबोधाधिकार इह चेदलमन्यपाठैः । तत्प्रेमभावरसभक्तिविलास नामहारेषु चेत्खलु मनः किमु कामिनीभिः
If here there is sufficient authority for describing the form and qualities of Shri Krishna, and for understanding the scriptures, then what need is there for other readings? If the mind is absorbed in the nectar of love, emotion, and devotion to Krishna, what use are desires for women?
तच्चेतसा प्रभजतां व्रजबालकेंद्रं वृंदावनक्षितितलं यमुनाजलं च । तल्लोकनाथपदपंकजधूलिमिश्रलिप्तं वपुः किल वृथागरुचंदनाद्यैः
For those whose minds worship the chief of the cowherd boys, the land of Vrindavana, and the waters of Yamuna, their bodies, smeared with the dust from the lotus feet of the Lord of that world, are vainly adorned with agarwood and sandalwood.
इति श्रीपद्मपुराणे पातालखंडे उमामहेश्वरसंवादे वृंदावनमाहात्म्ये अशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the eightieth chapter, concerning the glory of Vrindavana, in the dialogue between Uma and Maheshvara in the Patalakhanda of the Shri Padma Purana.
ऋषय ऊचु- सूत जीव चिरं साधो श्रीकृष्णचरितामृतम् । त्वया प्रकाशितं सर्वं भक्तानां भवतारणम्
The sages said: Suta, may you live long, O virtuous one! The nectar of Shri Krishna's deeds has been revealed by you, which is the deliverance of devotees.
श्रीकृष्णलीलां निखिलां ब्रूहि दैनंदिनीं प्रभो । ययाकर्णितया साधो कृष्णे भक्तिर्विवर्द्धते
O master, tell us all the daily pastimes of Shri Krishna, by hearing which, O virtuous one, devotion to Krishna increases.
गुरोः शिष्यस्य मंत्रस्य विधानं लक्षणं पृथक् । वदास्माकं महाभाग त्वं हि नः परमः सुहृत्
Tell us, O blessed one, the distinct procedures and characteristics of the teacher, the disciple, and the mantra; for you are our supreme friend.
सूत उवाच- एकदा यमुनातीरे समासीनं जगद्गुरुम् । नारदः प्रणिपत्याह देवदेवं सदाशिवम्
Suta said: Once, on the bank of the Yamuna, Narada, having bowed, spoke to the Lord of gods, Sadashiva, who was seated as the teacher of the world.
नारद उवाच- देवदेव महादेव सर्वज्ञ जगदीश्वर । भगवद्धर्मतत्त्वज्ञ कृष्णमंत्रविदां वर
Narada said: O Lord of gods, O great god, O all-knowing ruler of the universe, knower of the essence of divine dharma, best among those who know the Krishna mantra,
कृष्णमंत्रा मया लब्धास्त्वत्तो ये च पितुः परे । ते सर्वे साधितास्तत्वान्मंत्रराजादयो मया
The Krishna mantras I have obtained from you and from my father and others—all these, including the king of mantras, have been accomplished by me according to their essence.
बहुवर्षसहस्रैस्तु शाकमूलफलाशिना । शुष्कपर्णांबुवाय्वादि भोजिना च निराशिना
For many thousands of years, subsisting on vegetables, roots, and fruits, eating dried leaves, water, air, and other such things, and living without hope.
स्त्रीणां संदर्शनालापवर्जिना भूमिशायिना । कामादिषड्गुणं जित्वा बाह्येंद्रियनियम्यता
Avoiding the sight and conversation of women, sleeping on the ground, conquering the six passions such as desire, and restraining the external senses.
एवंकृतेऽपि नैवात्मा संतुष्टो मम शंकर । तद्ब्रूहि यत्प्रसिध्येत संस्काराद्यैर्विना प्रभो
Even after doing all this, my soul is not satisfied, O Śaṃkara; therefore, tell me, O Lord, what may succeed without rituals and other practices.
सकृदुच्चारणादेव ददाति फलमुत्तमम् । यदि योग्योऽस्मि देवेश तदा मे कृपया वद
By uttering it just once, it grants the highest result; if I am worthy, O Lord of the gods, then kindly tell me.
शिव उवाच- साधु पृष्टं महाभाग त्वया लोकहितैषिणा । सुगोप्यमपि वक्ष्यामि मंत्रचिंतामणिं तव
Śiva said: Well asked, O great one, by you who desire the welfare of the world; even though it is most secret, I will tell you the wish-fulfilling mantra.
रहस्यानां रहस्यं यद्गुह्यानां गुह्यमुत्तमम् । न मया कथितं देव्यै नाग्रजेभ्यः पुरा तव
It is the secret of secrets, the highest among all hidden things; I have not spoken it to the goddess, nor to the ancient sages before you.
