With the used sandal paste, one should mark the body with his names; on the forehead, the mace should be worn, and on the crown, the bow and arrow likewise.
Nandaka should be placed at the heart's center, and the conch and discus on both arms; if a brahmin adorned with conch and discus dies in a cremation ground—
—the destination spoken of at Prayaga is assured for him; whoever, devoted to Vishnu, wears tulasi leaves upon the head—
—accomplishes all actions and attains unfading results; adorned with tulasi wood garlands, he performs his duties.
The merit gained for ancestors and deities becomes multiplied a hundred million times; after offering to Kesava a garland made of tulasi wood—
—whoever wears it with devotion, his sin is destroyed; after worshipping with water and the like, he should recite this mantra:
She who, when seen, dispels all accumulated sins; when touched, purifies the body; when bowed to, removes diseases; when sprinkled, cuts off the end of life; when placed nearby, brings closeness; when planted for Lord Krishna, and when laid at his feet, grants the fruit of liberation—to that tulasi, I bow.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purana, in the Patalakhanda, in the greatness of Vrindavana, in the dialogue between Devi and Ishvara, is the seventy-ninth chapter named 'The Determination of Tilaka and Other Marks.'
Parvati said: When the dreadful Kali age arrives, filled with the grip of sense pleasures, and people are distressed by children, spouses, wealth, and so on—how is it to be endured, O Lord?
Therefore, O ocean of compassion, tell me the means, O Mahadeva. Ishvara said: Only the name of Hari, the name of Hari, the name of Hari alone.
The auspicious names—Hare Rama, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna—those who recite them always are not afflicted by Kali.
Performing various actions, one should remember the names; repeatedly saying 'Krishna Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Krishna,' again and again.
By joining my name with your name, even if by mistake, one is freed from sin, just as fire consumes a heap of cotton.
Whether with the word 'Jaya' or with the prefix 'Śrī', whoever recites my auspicious name is freed from sin.
Day and night, at the sandhyā times, and at all times, one should remember; remembering Rāma constantly, one sees Kṛṣṇa with their own eyes.
Whether pure or impure, at all times and always, by the remembrance of the name alone, one is instantly freed from worldly existence.
Even for one burdened with various offenses, the name removes sin; in the Kali age, sacrifice, vows, austerity, and gifts, even with all their limbs, do not.
Bathing in the Gaṅgā and the name of Hari—these two are unfailing.
Even the killing of ten thousand, a thousand fierce sins, consorting with countless teacher's wives, thefts and other wrongs—by the dear name Govinda, O blessed one, these do not remain.
Impure or pure, or having reached any state whatsoever, whoever remembers Puṇḍarīkākṣa becomes pure both outwardly and inwardly.
By remembrance of the name and by contemplating its meaning, one may fashion a garland of gold, silver, or even flour.
Having made marks on the feet, one should begin worship; at the base of the right big toe, he bears the discus.
There, even for those who bow, for the cutting of worldly bondage; at the base of the middle toe, Acyuta bears the lotus.
For attracting the minds of those who meditate, and of bees, he bears below the lotus the banner, the banner of victory over all misfortune.
At the base of the little toe, he bears the thunderbolt, which shatters the mass of devotees' sins; in the middle of the side, the goad, which causes eagerness in the devotee's heart.
He bears the barleycorn at the joint of the big toe, signifying abundance of enjoyment; at the base, the mace, which breaks the mountain of sins for all embodied beings.
For the illumination of all knowledge, that unborn Lord bears these marks; and also the lotus and other signs on the right foot.
On the left foot, this ocean of compassion bears them; therefore, the glory of Govinda is filled with the beauty of bliss.
Whoever listens to or always recites this is certainly liberated, without doubt. I will now tell the monthly rite, which brings supreme delight to Viṣṇu.
In the month of Jyeṣṭha, one should carefully and purely bathe Śrī Viṣṇu; daily sins, as well as those of the fortnight, month, season, and year, are removed.
