One whose forehead bears the upward mark, the ūrdhva-puṇḍra, is purified from all sins and attains the world of Viṣṇu.
Even a cāṇḍāla, if his soul is pure and he bears the ūrdhva-puṇḍra on his forehead, is worthy of worship—there is no doubt.
One should not look upon a person whose forehead does not bear the ūrdhva-puṇḍra; having seen such, gaze at the sun.
If one sees or touches a brāhmaṇa whose forehead bears the tripuṇḍra but not the ūrdhva-puṇḍra, one should bathe with clothes on.
The mark should be made with a gap, resembling the footprint of Hari; one who makes the ūrdhva-puṇḍra without a gap is the lowest of twice-born, and his forehead is always like that of a dog-eater—there is no doubt.
The beautiful ūrdhva-puṇḍra extends from the nose to the hairline; if there is a gap in the middle, know it as the abode of Hari.
On the left side dwells Brahmā, on the right Sadāśiva; in the middle, recognize Viṣṇu—therefore, do not smear the middle.
Whoever carefully applies the ūrdhva-puṇḍra, whether seeing his reflection or in water, O fortunate one, attains the highest state.
Fire, water, the Vedas, moon, sun, and wind—these always reside in the right ear of brāhmaṇas.
Gaṅgā is in the right ear, fire in the nostril; by touching either, one is purified instantly.
Having placed water in a conch for the great-souled Vaiṣṇavas, mixed with tulasī, one should offer it, drink it, and bow with the head.
One should drink it, sprinkle the body, and give it to son, friend, and companions; drinking Viṣṇu's foot-water destroys the sins of millions of births.
Dropping even a drop of that water on the ground multiplies the sin eightfold; holding the water in the conch, praising, bowing, and circumambulating.
Water is always kept; by it, the fruit of birth is attained. If there is no conch or bell adorned with Garuḍa in one's house,
In front of Vāsudeva, he is not a devotee in the age of Kali. Whether by vehicles or sandals, the conveyance in the Lord's house,
During festivals of the gods, neglect of service, not bowing before Him, and offering worship when impure or after eating leftovers—
A one-handed salutation, circumambulation in front, stretching out the feet ahead, and reclining on a couch—
Lying down, eating, speaking falsely, speaking loudly, idle talk, weeping, and quarrelling—
Restraint and favor, harsh speech towards women, covering oneself alone, slandering others, and praising others—
Obscene speech, releasing wind downward, offering inferior service when capable, eating without offering—
Not offering fruits and other things that arise at their proper time, giving what remains after being assigned, and whatever is left of the condiments—
Eating after making it clear, slandering others, praising others, remaining silent before the teacher, reciting one's own praise, and reviling the deity—
Thus, thirty-two offenses against Viṣṇu are enumerated.
Thousands of offenses are committed by me day and night; considering me as yours, forgive me, O Madhusūdana.
Reciting this mantra and bowing down flat on the ground, Hari always forgives thousands of offenses.
Eating as prescribed in the scriptures for twice-borns, in the evening and morning, and what remains from Viṣṇu's devotees, one is freed from the sins of the day.
Food is Brahmā, the essence is Viṣṇu; one should eat meat while reciting this. Thus, knowing this, whoever eats is not tainted by the faults of food.
A Vaiṣṇava man should not eat bottle gourd, round vegetables, lentils with husk, palm fruit, white eggplant, or brinjal.
A Vaiṣṇava man should not eat the leaves of banyan, peepal, arka, kumbhī, tiṃduka, kovidāra, or kadamba trees.
In the month of Śrāvaṇa, one should avoid green vegetables; in Bhādrapada, curd should be abandoned; in Āśvina, milk; and in Kārttika, meat should be given up.
