तदेकं पावनं लोके तद्धि सर्वं विशोधयेत् । पूजा च पंचधा प्रोक्ता तासां भेदं शृणुष्व मे
That alone is purifying in the world; it cleanses everything. Worship is said to be of five kinds—hear their distinctions from me.
अभिगमनमुपादानं योगः स्वाध्याय एव च । इज्या पंचप्रकारार्चा क्रमेण कथयामि ते
Approach, preparation, union, self-study, and worship—these five kinds of worship I will explain to you in order.
तत्वाभिगमनं नाम देवतास्थानमार्जनम् । उपलेपं च निर्माल्यदूरीकरणमेव च
Approach is called the cleaning of the deity's place, anointing, and removal of remnants.
उपादानं नाम गंध पुष्पादिचयनं तथा । योगो नाम स्वदेवस्य स्वात्मनैवात्मभावना
Preparation is the gathering of scents and flowers; union is the contemplation of one's own deity as one's very self.
स्वाध्यायो नाम मंत्रार्थानुसंधापूर्वको जपः । सूक्तस्तोत्रादिपाठश्च हरेः संकीर्त्तनं तथा
Svādhyāya is the recitation of mantras with contemplation on their meaning, as well as the reading of hymns, praises, and other such texts, and likewise the singing of the names of Hari.
तत्त्वादिशास्त्राभ्यासश्च स्वाध्यायः परिकीर्तितः । इज्या नाम स्वदेवस्य पूजनं च यथार्थतः
The repeated study of scriptures concerning the truth is also called svādhyāya; and ijyā is the proper worship of one's chosen deity.
इति पंचप्रकारार्चा कथिता तव सुव्रते । सार्ष्टि सामीप्य सालोक्य सायुज्य सारूप्यदा क्रमात्
Thus, O virtuous lady, the fivefold forms of worship have been described to you: sārṣṭi, sāmīpya, sālokya, sāyujya, and sārūpya, in order.
प्रसंगात्कथयिष्यामि शालग्रामशिलार्चनम् । केशवादेश्चतुर्बाहोर्दक्षिणोर्ध्वकरक्रमात्
Now, in this context, I shall explain the worship of the Śālagrāma stone, beginning with Keśava, the four-armed one, according to the sequence of his right and upper hands.
शंखचक्रगदापद्मी केशवाख्यो गदाधरः । नारायणः पद्मगदाचक्रशंखायुधैः क्रमात्
Keśava, known as the bearer of the mace, holds the conch, discus, mace, and lotus; Nārāyaṇa holds the lotus, mace, discus, and conch, in that order.
माधवश्चक्रशंखाभ्यां पद्मेन गदया भवेत् । गदाब्जशंखचक्री च गोविंदाख्यो गदाधरः
Mādhava holds the discus and conch, along with the lotus and mace; Govinda, called the bearer of the mace, holds the mace, lotus, conch, and discus.
पद्मशंखारि गदिने विष्णुरूपाय ते नमः । सशंखाब्ज गदाचक्र मधुसूदन मूर्तये
Salutations to you, who take the form of Viṣṇu, holding the lotus, conch, enemy of the mace, and the mace; to the form of Madhusūdana, who holds the conch, lotus, mace, and discus.
नमो गदारिशंखाब्जयुक्तत्रिविक्रमाय च । सारिकौमोदकी पद्मशंख वामन मूर्त्तये
Homage to Trivikrama, endowed with the mace, enemy of the conch, and the lotus; to Vāmana, whose form bears the Sārṅga bow, Kaumodakī mace, lotus, and conch.
चक्राब्जशंखगदिने नमः श्रीधरमूर्त्तये । हृषीकेशसारिगदाशंखपद्मिन्नमोस्तु ते
Salutations to the form of Śrīdhara, who holds the discus, lotus, conch, and mace; and to you, Hṛṣīkeśa, who bear the Sārṅga bow, mace, conch, and lotus.
साब्जशंखगदाचक्रपद्मनाभ स्वमूर्त्तये । दामोदरशंखगदाचक्रपद्मिन्नमोस्तु ते
To Padmanābha, whose own form bears the lotus, conch, mace, and discus; and to Dāmodara, who holds the conch, mace, discus, and lotus—salutations to you.
शंखाब्जचक्रगदिने नमः संकर्षणाय च । सारिशंखगदाब्जाय वासुदेव नमोस्तुते
Salutations to Saṃkarṣaṇa, who holds the conch, lotus, discus, and mace; and to you, Vāsudeva, who bear the Sārṅga bow, conch, mace, and lotus.
शंखचक्रगदाब्जाय धृत प्रद्युम्नमूर्त्तये । नमोऽनिरुद्धाय गदाशंखाब्जारिविधारिणे
To Pradyumna, who holds the conch, discus, mace, and lotus—salutations to you; and to Aniruddha, who wields the mace, conch, lotus, and the enemy of the discus.
साब्जशंखगदाचक्रपुरुषोत्तममूर्त्तये । नमोऽधोक्षजरूपाय गदाशंखारि पद्मिने
Salutations to the supreme form of Puruṣottama, who holds the lotus, conch, mace, and discus; and to Adhokṣaja, who bears the mace, conch, enemy of the lotus, and the lotus.
नृसिंहमूर्त्तये पद्मगदाशंखारिधारिणे । पद्मारिशंखगदिने नमोस्त्वच्युतमूर्त्तये
To the form of Nṛsiṃha, who holds the lotus, mace, conch, and enemy of the discus; and to the form of Acyuta, who bears the lotus, enemy of the conch, and the mace—salutations to you.
सगदाब्जारिशंखाय नमः श्रीकृष्णमूर्त्तये । शालग्रामशिलाद्वारगतलग्नद्विचक्रधृक्
Salutations to the form of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who holds the mace, lotus, enemy of the conch, and the conch; and to the Śālagrāma stone, which bears two chakras at its entrance.
शुक्लाभरेखः शोभाढ्यः सदेवः श्रीगदाधरः । लग्नद्विचक्रो रक्ताभः पूर्वभागस्तु पुष्कलः
He who is adorned with a white line, resplendent, accompanied by the gods, and bears the glorious mace; with two chakras at the entrance, reddish in hue, and abundant at the front—
संकर्षणोऽथ प्रद्युम्नः सूक्ष्मचक्रस्तु पीतकः । सुदीर्घसुषिरच्छिद्रो ह्यनिरुद्धस्तु वर्त्तुलः
Is Saṃkarṣaṇa, then Pradyumna; the subtle chakra is yellow; Aniruddha is round, with a very long and deep opening.
नीलो द्वारे त्रिरेखश्च अथ नारायणोऽसितः । मध्ये गदाकृती रेखा नाभिपद्मं महोन्नतम्
Nīla is at the entrance, with three lines; Nārāyaṇa is dark; in the middle is a line shaped like a mace, and the navel-lotus is greatly elevated.
पृथुचक्रो नृसिंहो यः कपिलो यस्त्रिबिंदुकः । अथवा पंचबिंदोस्तु पूजनं ब्रह्मचारिणः
He whose wheel is broad is Narasimha; Kapila is marked with three dots; or, for the celibate, worship is to be done to the one with five dots.
वराहः स त्रिलिंगो यो विषमद्वयचक्रकः । नीलस्त्रिरेखः स्थूलोऽथ कूर्ममूर्तिः सबिंदुकः
Varaha is the one with three lines and an uneven double wheel; the blue one has three lines and is massive, and the Kurma form is marked with a dot.
कृष्णः सवर्तुलावर्त्त पांडुरो धृतपृष्ठकः । श्रीधरः पंचरेखश्च वनमाली गदांकितः
Krishna is marked with a double spiral; Pandura bears a raised back; Sridhara has five lines, wears a forest garland, and is marked with a mace.
वामनो वर्तुलो नाम मध्यचक्रः सनीलकः । नानावर्णानेकमूर्ति नागभोगी त्वनंतकः
Vamana is called round, with a central wheel and a blue mark; Anantaka is of many colors, many forms, and is adorned with a serpent coil.
स्थूलो दामोदरो नीलो मध्ये चक्रः सनीलकः । संकर्षणद्वारकोव्यादथ ब्रह्मा सुलोहितः
Damodara is massive and blue, with a wheel and blue mark in the center; Sankarshana and Dvaraka are next, and Brahma is of bright red hue.
सुदीर्घरेखासुषिर एकचक्रांबुजः पृथुः । पृथुचक्रः स्थूलछिद्रः कृष्णो बिंदुश्च बिंदुमान्
With very long lines, hollow, a single wheel, lotus-shaped and broad; with a broad wheel and large opening, Krishna is marked with a dot and is endowed with a dot.
ह्यग्रीवोंऽकुशाकारः पंचरेखः सकौस्तुभः । वैकुंठो मल्लवद्भाति एकचक्रमयोसितः
Hayagriva is elephant-hook shaped, with five lines and the Kaustubha gem; Vaikuntha shines like a wrestler, with a single wheel and two marks.
मत्स्यो दीर्घांबुजाकारो दीर्घरेखश्च पांडुरः । रामचक्रो दक्षरेखो यः श्यामः स त्रिविक्रमः
Matsya is long and lotus-shaped, with a long line and pale color; the Rama wheel has a right-hand line, and the dark one is Trivikrama.
