दृष्ट्वा तत्परमाश्चर्यं चिंतयंती हृदा कियत् । पादांगुष्ठेना लिखंती भुवं नम्रानना स्थिता
Seeing that supreme wonder, she pondered in her heart for a while, standing with bowed face, tracing the earth with her big toe.
ततस्तासां संभ्रमोऽभूद्दृष्टीनां च परस्परम् । केयं मदीयजातीया चिरेणानस्तकौतुका
Then, among them, there arose confusion and mutual glances: 'Who is she, of our kind, who has come after so long, arousing curiosity?'
इति सर्वाः समालोक्य ज्ञातव्येयमिति क्षणम् । आमंत्र्य मंत्रणाभिज्ञाः कौतुकाद्द्रष्टुमागताः
Thus, all observed her, thinking for a moment, 'She must be known.' Summoning those skilled in counsel, they came out of curiosity to see her.
आगत्य तासामेकाथ नाम्ना प्रियमुदा मता । गिरा मधुरया प्रीत्या तामुवाच मनस्विनी
One of them, named Priyamuda, approached with cheerful speech, and with sweet words and affection, addressed her, wise in mind.
प्रियमुदोवाच-। कासि त्वं कस्य कन्यासि कस्य त्वं प्राणवल्लभा । जाता कुत्रासि केनास्मिन्नानीता वा गता स्वयम्
Priyamuda spoke: 'Who are you? Whose daughter are you? Whose beloved are you? Where were you born? By whom were you brought here, or did you come on your own?'
एतच्च सर्वमस्माकं कथ्यतां चिंतया किमु । स्थानेऽस्मिन्परमानंदे कस्यापि दुःखमस्ति किम्
'Tell us all this—what are you thinking? In this place of supreme joy, does anyone have sorrow?'
इति पृष्टा तया सा तु विनयावनतिं गता । उवाच सुस्वरं तासां मोहयंती मनांसि च
Thus questioned by her, she bowed humbly and spoke in a melodious voice, enchanting their minds.
अर्जुन उवाच- । का वास्मि कस्य कन्या वा प्रजाता कस्य वल्लभा । आनीता केन वा चात्र किं वाथ स्वयमागता
Arjuna spoke: 'Who am I? Whose daughter am I? Whose beloved am I? By whom was I brought here, or did I come myself?'
एतत्किंचिन्न जानामि देवी जानातु तत्पुनः । कथितं श्रूयतां तन्मे मद्वाक्ये प्रत्ययो यदि
'I do not know any of this; let the goddess know it. Hear what I say, if you trust my words.'
अस्यैव दक्षिणे पार्श्वे एकमस्ति सरोवरम् । तत्राहं स्नातुमायाता जाता तत्रैव संस्थिता
'On the right side here, there is a lake. I came there to bathe, and was born and remain there.'
विषमोत्कंठिता पश्चात्पश्यंती परितो दिशम् । एकमाकाशसंभूतं ध्वनिमश्रौषमद्भुतम्
'Afterwards, distressed and longing, I looked around in all directions and heard a wondrous sound arising from the sky.'
अनेनैव पथा सुभ्रु गच्छ पूर्वसरोवरम् । उपस्पृश्य जलं तस्य साधयस्व मनोरथम्
'Go by this very path, O beautiful-browed one, to the eastern lake. Touch its water and fulfill your desire.'
तत्र संति हि सख्यस्ते मा सीद वरवार्णिनि । ताहि संपादयिष्यंति तत्र ते वरमीप्सितम्
There, your friends are present, O beautiful one; do not be distressed. They will fulfill for you the boon you desire there.
इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य तस्मादत्र समागता । विषादहर्षपूर्णात्मा चिंताकुलसमाकुला
Hearing those words, she came there, her heart filled with both sorrow and joy, overwhelmed by anxious thoughts.
आगतास्य जलं स्पृष्ट्वा नानाविधशुभध्वनिम् । अश्रौषं च ततः पश्चादपश्यं भवतीः पराः
Having arrived, she touched the water and heard various auspicious sounds; then afterwards, she saw the other noble ladies.
एतन्मात्रं विजानामि कायेन मनसा गिरा । एतदेव मया देव्यः कथितं यदि रोचते
This alone I know, by body, mind, and speech; this alone I have told you, O goddess, if it pleases you.
का यूयं तनुजाः केषां क्व जाताः कस्य वल्लभाः । तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्याः सा वै प्रियमुदाब्रवीत्
Who are you? Whose daughters are you? Where were you born? Whose beloveds are you? Hearing her words, her dear friend replied.
अस्त्वेवं प्राणसख्यः स्म तस्यैव च वयं शुभे । वृंदावनकलानाथ विहारदारिकाः सुखम्
So be it; we are her lifelong companions, O auspicious one. We are the joyful maidens of Vrindavan's master.
ता आत्ममुदितास्तेन व्रजबाला इहागताः । एताः श्रुतिगणाः ख्याता एताश्च मुनयस्तथा
Those girls, delighted by him, have come here as the young women of Vraja. These are renowned groups of the Vedas, and these are also sages.
वयं बल्लवबाला हि कथितास्ते स्वरूपतः । अत्र राधापतेरंगात्पूर्वायाः प्रेयसीतमाः
We are the cowherd maidens, described in our true form; here, we are the foremost beloveds from the limbs of Radha's lord.
नित्या नित्यविहारिण्यो नित्यकेलि भुवश्चराः । एषा पूर्णरसा देवी एषा च रसमंथरा
Eternal, ever-enjoying, ever-sporting on earth; this is the goddess of full rasa, and this is the one who stirs rasa.
एषा रसालया नाम एषा च रसवल्लरी । रसपीयूषधारेयमेषा रसतरंगिणी
This is the one called the abode of rasa, and this is the creeper of rasa; this is the stream of nectar of rasa, and this is the wave of rasa.
रसकल्लोलिनी चैषा इयं च रसवापिका । अनंगसेना एषैव इयं चानंगमालिनी
This is the playful pond of rasa, and this is the reservoir of rasa; this is the army of Cupid, and this is the garlanded by Cupid.
मदयंती इयं बाला एषा च रसविह्वला । इयं च ललिता नाम इयं ललितयौवना
This girl delights, and this is overwhelmed by rasa; this is named Lalita, and this is youthful Lalita.
अनंगकुसुमा चैषा इयं मदनमंजरी । एषा कलावती नाम इयं रतिकला स्मृता
This is Ananga-kusuma, and this is Madana-manjari; this is named Kalavati, and this is known as the art of love.
इयं कामकला नाम इयं हि कामदायिनी । रतिलोला इयं बाला इयं बाला रतोत्सुका
This is named Kama-kala, and this is the giver of desire; this girl is eager for love, and this girl longs for love.
एषा चरति सर्वस्व रतिचिंतामणिस्त्वसौ । नित्यानंदाः काश्चिदेता नित्यप्रेमरसप्रदाः
This one moves as the wish-fulfilling gem of love; some of these are eternally blissful, some are givers of eternal love-rasa.
अतःपरं श्रुतिगणास्तासां काश्चिदिमाः शृणु । उद्गीतैषा सुगीतेयं कलगीता त्वियं प्रिया
Next, listen to some of the groups of Vedas among them: this is Udgita, this is Sugita, this is Kalagita, and this is Priya.
एषा कलसुराख्याता बालेयं कलकंठिका । विपंचीयं क्रमपदा एषा बहुहुता मता
This is called Kalasura, this girl is Kalakanthika; this is Vipanchi, stepwise, and this is known as Bahuhuta.
एषा बहुप्रयोगेयं ख्याता बहुकला बला । इयं कलावती ख्याता मता चैषा क्रियावती
This is Bahuprayoga, famed for many arts and strength; this is renowned as Kalavati, and this is known as Kriyavati.
