तस्य कृष्णप्रसादेन पुत्रोऽभून्मधुराकृतिः । चित्रध्वज इति ख्यातः कौमारावधि वैष्णवः
By the grace of Krishna, he had a son of sweet form, renowned as Citradhvaja, who was devoted to Vishnu from childhood.
स राजा सुसुतं सौम्यं सुस्थिरं द्वादशाब्दिकम् । आदेशयद्द्विजान्मंत्रं परमष्टादशाक्षरम्
That king instructed his gentle, steadfast son, twelve years old, in the mantra of the twice-born, the supreme eighteen-syllable mantra.
अभिषिच्यमानः स शिशुर्मंत्रामृतमयैर्जलैः । तत्क्षणे भूपतिं प्रेम्णा नत्वोदश्रुप्रकल्पितः
As the boy was anointed with waters infused with the nectar of the mantra, he bowed to the king with love, tears welling up.
तस्मिन्दिने स वै बालः शुचिवस्त्रधरः शुचिः । हारनूपुरसूत्राद्यैर्ग्रैवेयांगदकंकणैः
On that day, the boy, pure and wearing clean garments, was adorned with necklaces, anklets, threads, garlands, bracelets, and armlets.
विभूषितो हरेर्भक्तिमुपस्पृश्यामलाशयः । विष्णोरायतनं गत्वा स्थित्वैकाकी व्यचिंतयत्
Adorned thus, with pure intent, he touched devotion to Hari, and went to the temple of Vishnu, where he stood alone and reflected.
कथं भजामि तं भक्तं मोहनं गोपयोषिताम् । विक्रीडंतं सदा ताभिः कालिंदीपुलिने वने
How shall I worship that beloved one, enchanting to the cowherd maidens, always playing with them on the banks of the Yamuna, in the forest?
इत्थमत्याकुलमतिश्चिंतयन्नेव बालकः । अथापपरमां विद्यां स्वप्नं च समवाप्यत
Thinking thus, his mind greatly troubled, the boy attained the supreme knowledge and a vision in his dream.
आसीत्कृष्णप्रतिकृतिः पुरतस्तस्य शोभना । शिलामयी स्वर्णपीठे सर्वलक्षणलक्षिता
Before him appeared a beautiful image of Krishna, made of stone, seated on a golden throne, marked with all auspicious signs.
साभूदिंदीवरश्यामा स्निग्धलावण्यशालिनी । त्रिभंगललिताकार शिखंडी पिच्छभूषणा
She was dark as a blue lotus, radiant with gentle beauty, graceful in triple bends, adorned with a crest and peacock feathers.
कूजयंती मुदा वेणुं कांचनीमधरेऽर्पिताम् । दक्षसव्यगताभ्यां च सुंदरीभ्यां निषेविताम्
Joyfully playing the golden flute placed at her lips, attended by two beautiful companions standing at her right and left.
वर्द्धयंतीं तयोः कामं चुंबनाश्लेषणादिभिः । दृष्ट्वा चित्रध्वजः कृष्णं तादृग्वेषविलासिनम्
Increasing their love with kisses, embraces, and the like; seeing Krishna thus, Citradhvaja beheld him in such attire and play.
अवनम्य शिरस्तस्मै पुरो लज्जितमानसः । अथोवाच हरिर्दक्षपार्श्वगां प्रेयसीं हसन्
He bowed his head to him, his mind shy and embarrassed; then Hari, smiling, spoke to his beloved standing at his right.
सलज्जं परमं चैनं स्वशरीरासनागतम् । निर्मायात्मसमं दिव्यं युवतीरूपमद्भुतम्
This one, bashful and supreme, has come to his own seat; create a divine form, wondrous, like yourself, as a young woman.
चिंतयस्व शरीरेण ह्यभेदं मृगलोचने । अथो त्वदंगतेजोभिः स्पृष्टस्त्वद्रूपमाप्स्यति
Contemplate, O doe-eyed one, the unity in form; then, touched by the radiance of your limbs, he will attain your form.
ततः सा पद्मपत्राक्षी गत्वा चित्रध्वजांतिकम् । निजांगकैस्तदंगानामभेदं ध्यायती स्थिता
Then she, whose eyes were like lotus petals, went to Citradhvaja and stood there, meditating upon the inseparable unity of her own limbs with his.
अथास्यास्त्वंगतेजांसि तदंगं पर्यपूरयन् । स्तनयोर्ज्योतिषा जातौ पीनौ चारुपयोधरौ
At that moment, her radiance entered his limbs, filling them; and from that light arose two beautiful, full breasts.
नितंबज्योतिषा जातं श्रोणिबिंबं मनोहरम् । कुंतलज्योतिषा केशपाशोऽभूत्करयोः करौ
From the radiance at her hips appeared a charming, rounded waist; from the radiance at her hair, a mass of locks formed, and from her arms, hands emerged.
सर्वमेवं सुसंपन्नं भूषावासः स्रगादिकम् । कलासु कुशला जाता सौरभेनांतरात्मनि
Thus, everything was perfectly accomplished—her ornaments, garments, garlands, and the like; she became skilled in the arts, and her inner self was fragrant.
दीपाद्दीपमिवालोक्य सुभगां भुवि कन्यकाम् । चित्रध्वजां त्रपाभंगि स्मितशोभां मनोहराम्
Seeing the lovely maiden on earth, radiant like a lamp shining from another lamp, Citradhvaja beheld her, breaking through her shyness, with a captivating smile.
प्रेम्णा गृहीत्वा करयोः सा तामपहरन्मुदा । गोविंदवामपार्श्वस्थां प्रेयसीं परिरभ्य च
With love, she took her by the hands and joyfully led her away, embracing her beloved who stood at Govinda’s left side.
उवाच तव दासीयं नाम चास्याश्चकार य । सेवां चास्यै वद प्रीत्या यथाभिरुचितां प्रियाम्
She said, 'I am your servant,' and gave her that name; she instructed her to serve with affection, as desired by her beloved.
अथ चित्रकलेत्येतन्नाम चात्ममतेन सा । चकार चाह सेवार्थं धृत्वा चापि विपंचिकाम्
Then, by her own decision, she took the name Citrakalā, and declared her intention to serve, holding the vina in her hand.
सदा त्वं निकटे तिष्ठ गायस्व विविधैः स्वरैः । गुणात्मन्प्राणनाथस्य तवायं विहितो विधिः
Always remain nearby, sing with various melodies; this is the prescribed duty for you, O virtuous one, for the lord of your life.
अथ चित्रकला त्वाज्ञां गृहीत्वानम्य माधवम् । तत्प्रेयस्याश्च चरणं गृहीत्वा पादयो रजः
Then Citrakalā, accepting your command, bowed to Mādhava, and, taking the dust from the feet of his beloved, touched it to her own feet.
जगौ सुमधुरं गीतं तयोरानंदकारणम् । अथ प्रीत्योपगूढा सा कृष्णेनानंदमूर्तिना
She sang a most sweet song, causing joy for them both; then, embraced with affection by Krishna, the embodiment of bliss.
यावत्सुखांबुधौ पूर्णा तावदेवाप्यबुध्यत । चित्रध्वजो महाप्रेमविह्वलः स्मरतत्परः
As long as she was immersed in the ocean of happiness, so long did Citradhvaja remain, overwhelmed by great love and absorbed in remembrance.
तमेव परमानंदं मुक्तकंठो रुरोद ह । तदारभ्य रुदन्नेव मुक्त्वा हरिविचारकम्
He cried out, unrestrained, in supreme bliss; from that moment, he wept continually, abandoning all concern for worldly matters.
आभाषितोऽपि पित्राद्यैर्नैवावोचद्वचः क्वचित् । मासमात्रं गृहे स्थित्वा निशीथे कृष्णसंश्रयः
Even when addressed by his father and others, he never spoke a word; after staying at home for a month, he sought refuge in Krishna at night.
निर्गत्यारण्यमचरत्तपो वै मुनिदुष्करम् । कल्पांते देहमुत्सृज्य तपसैव महामुनिः
He went out and practiced austerities in the forest, performing difficult penance like a sage; at the end of an age, he relinquished his body through that penance, becoming a great sage.
वीरगुप्ताभिधानस्य गोपस्य दुहिता शुभा । जाता चित्रकलेत्येव यस्याः स्कंधे मनोहरा
The auspicious daughter of the cowherd named Vīragupta was born as Citrakalā, upon whose shoulder was a charming vina.
