भर्तारं वव्रिरे सर्वाः पतिं विश्वस्य सर्वगम् । एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु गोविंदोऽनंतरूपवान्
—they all chose him as their husband, the all-pervading Lord of the universe. At that very moment, Govinda, assuming manifold forms—
तासां करग्रहं चक्रे विधिना पुरुषोत्तमः । नरकस्य सुताः सर्वे पुरस्कृत्य महीं तदा
—the supreme person, took each of them by the hand according to custom. Then, bringing forward all the daughters of Naraka—
गोविंदं शरणं जग्मुस्तानरक्षद्घृणानिधिः । तद्राज्ये स्थाप्य तान्सर्वान्पृथिव्या वाक्य गौरवात्
—they sought refuge in Govinda, the ocean of compassion who had slain Naraka. Establishing them all in his kingdom, out of respect for their words—
ऐन्द्रं विमानमारोप्य ताश्च सर्वा वरस्त्रियः । देवदूतैर्महाभागैर्द्वारवत्यां न्यवेशयत्
—he placed all those noble women in Indra's celestial chariot, and, with the help of divine messengers, settled them in Dvārakā.
वैनतेयं समारुह्य सत्यया सह केशवः । स्वर्लोकं प्रययौ तूर्णं द्रष्टुं तां देवमातरम्
Mounting Vinatā's son with Satyā, Keśava swiftly went to the world of the gods to see the divine mother.
प्रविश्य नगरीं तत्र देवराज्ञो जनार्दनः । अवरुह्य द्विजश्रेष्ठात्पत्न्या सह महाबलः
There, entering the city of the king of the gods, Janārdana, the mighty one, descended from Garuḍa with his wife.
ववंदे मातरं तत्र वंद्यां तां त्रिदिवौकसाम् । संपरिष्वज्य बाहुभ्यामदितिः पुत्रवत्सला
There, he bowed to his mother, revered among the dwellers of heaven; Aditi, affectionate as a mother to her son, embraced him with her arms.
निवेश्यासनमुख्ये तु पूजयामास भक्तितः । आदित्या वसवो रुद्राः शतक्रतुपुरोगमाः
Seating her in the chief place, he worshipped her with devotion; the Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, and Indra at their head.
तत्र संपूजयामासुर्यथार्हं परमेश्वरम् । शचीगृहं समागम्य सत्यभामा यशस्विनी
There, he duly worshipped the supreme lord; Satyabhama, illustrious, entered Shaci's house.
तया समर्चिता देव्या समासीना सुखासने । तस्मिन्काले सुपुष्पाणि पारिजातस्य किंकराः
Honored by the goddess, Satyabhama sat comfortably; at that time, the attendants of the Parijata brought splendid flowers.
शच्यै देव्यै ददुः प्रीत्या सहस्राक्षेण चोदिताः । प्रगृह्य तानि पुष्पाणि शचीदेवी सुमध्यमा
Prompted by Indra, those attendants lovingly gave the flowers to the goddess Shaci; Shaci, graceful in form, took them.
नीलनिर्मलकेशे च बबंध स्वस्य मूर्धनि । अवमान्य शची तत्र सत्यभामां यशस्विनीम्
With her pure, dark hair, she bound them upon her own head; there, Shaci disregarded the illustrious Satyabhama.
अनर्हा मानुषी चेयं देवार्हं कुसुमं शुभम् । इति कृत्वा मतिं तस्यै न ददौ कुसुमानि सा
Thinking, 'This woman is unworthy, merely human; this auspicious flower is fit for the gods,' she did not give the flowers to her.
विनिष्क्रम्य पुरात्तस्मात्सत्या कोपसमन्विता । समेत्य कृष्णं भर्त्तारमुवाच कमलेक्षणा
Leaving the palace, Satyabhama, filled with anger, approached her husband Krishna and spoke, her eyes like lotuses.
सत्योवाच- एषा शची यदुश्रेष्ठ पारिजातेन गर्विता । अदत्त्वा मम गोविंद बबंध स्वस्य मूर्द्धनि
Satyabhama said: 'This Shaci, O foremost of the Yadus, is proud of the Parijata; not giving it to me, Govinda, she bound it upon her own head.'
महादेव उवाच-। सत्यया भाषितं श्रुत्वा वासुदेवो महाबलः । उत्पाट्य पारिजातं तु निवेश्य गरुडोपरि
Mahadeva said: Hearing Satyabhama's words, Vasudeva, mighty in strength, uprooted the Parijata and placed it upon Garuda.
आरुह्य सत्यया तूर्णं वैनतेयं महाबलम् । प्रययौ द्वारकां रम्यां नगरीं देवकीसुतः
Mounting swiftly with Satyabhama upon the powerful Garuda, the son of Devaki went to the beautiful city of Dvaraka.
ततः कोपसमाविष्टो देवराजः शतक्रतुः । रुद्रैर्वसुभिरादित्यैः साध्यैश्च मरुतां गणैः
Then, filled with wrath, Indra, king of the gods, with Rudras, Vasus, Adityas, Sadhyas, and hosts of Maruts,
ऐरावतं समारुह्य ययौ युद्धाय केशवम् । ततो देवगणाः सर्वे परिवार्य्य जनार्दनम्
Mounted Airavata and went to battle with Kesava; then all the hosts of gods surrounded Janardana.
ववृषुः शस्त्रवर्षाणि मेघा इव महाचलम् । कृष्णश्चिच्छेद चक्रेण तान्यस्त्राणि दिवौकसाम्
They rained down showers of weapons like clouds upon a great mountain; Krishna cut down those weapons of the gods with his discus.
वैनतयस्तु संक्रुद्धः पक्षपातेन वीर्यवान् । पातयामास तान्देवान्पलालानीव मारुतः
Garuda, enraged and powerful, with partiality, struck down those gods like the wind scatters blades of grass.
ततः क्रुद्धः सहस्राक्षो देवानामीश्वरः प्रभुः । मुमोच सहसा दीप्तं वज्रं कृष्णजिघांसया
Then, furious, Indra, lord and master of the gods, suddenly hurled his blazing thunderbolt, intending to slay Krishna.
जग्राह कृष्णस्तं वज्रं हस्तेनैकेन लीलया । ततो भीतः सहस्राक्षो नागेंद्रादवरुह्य सः
Krishna caught that thunderbolt with one hand, effortlessly; then Indra, frightened, descended from the lord of serpents.
प्रांजलिः पुरतः स्थित्वा नमस्कृत्वा जनार्दनम् । प्राह गद्गदया वाचा स्तुत्वा स्तुतिभिरेव च १०० 6.249.
Standing before Janardana with joined palms, bowing, he spoke with faltering voice, praising him with hymns.
इंद्र उवाच- देवयोग्यमिदं कृष्ण पारिजातं त्वया पुरा । दत्तो मम सुराणां च कथं स्थास्यति मानुषे
Indra said: O Krishna, this Parijata is fit for the gods; you once gave it to me and to the gods. How, then, can it remain among humans?
महादेव उवाच- ततः प्रोवाच भगवान्सहस्राक्षमुपस्थितम् । शच्यावमानिता सत्या तव गेहे सुरेश्वर
Mahadeva said: Then the Blessed Lord spoke to the thousand-eyed one who had come: Satyabhama, your wife, was slighted by Shachi in your house, O Lord of the gods.
अदत्त्वा पारिजातानि सत्यायै सा पुलोमजा । स्वयमेव स्वशिरसि धारयामास ते प्रिया
Without giving the Parijata flowers to Satyabhama, Shachi, daughter of Puloma, herself wore them on her own head—your beloved.
अस्या निमित्तं देवेंद्र पारिजातो हृतो मया । अस्यै प्रतिश्रुतं दातुं मया सुरगणेश्वर
For this reason, O Indra, I have taken the Parijata; I have promised to give it to her, O Lord of the hosts of gods.
तव गेहे पारिजातं स्थापयामीति वासव । तस्मादद्य न दातव्यः पारिजातः सुरेश्वर
O Vasava, I will place the Parijata in your house; therefore, today the Parijata should not be given, O Lord of the gods.
देवतानां हितार्थाय प्रापयिष्यामि भूतले । तावत्तिष्ठतु देवेंद्र पारिजातो ममालये
For the welfare of the gods, I will send it to the earth; until then, O Indra, let the Parijata remain in my abode.
