समीरसूनुं प्रबलमायांतं वीक्ष्य वानरम् । जहास दर्शयन्दंतान्कोपयन्निव तं क्रुधा
Beholding the powerful son of the wind approaching in the form of a monkey, Kuśa laughed, displaying his teeth, as if provoking him in anger.
उवाच च हनूमंतमेहि त्वं मम संमुखम् । भेत्स्ये बाणसहस्रेण मृतो यास्यसि यामिनीम्
He said to Hanuman: 'Come before me. I will shatter you with a thousand arrows; slain, you will depart to the realm of night.'
इत्युक्तो हनुमाञ्ज्ञात्वा रामसूनुं महाबलम् । स्वामिकार्यं प्रकर्तव्यमिति कृत्वा प्रधावितः
Thus addressed, Hanuman, recognizing the mighty son of Rāma, resolved to fulfill his master's purpose and rushed forward.
शालमुत्पाट्य तरसा विशालं शतशाखिनम् । कुशं वक्षसि संलक्ष्य ययौ योद्धुं महाबलः
Uprooting with force a great śāla tree with a hundred branches, Hanuman, of immense strength, advanced to fight, aiming at Kuśa's chest.
शालहस्तं समायांतं हनूमंतं महाबलम् । त्रिभिः क्षुरप्रैर्विव्याध हृदि चंद्रोपमैर्बली
As Hanuman, mighty and bearing the śāla tree, approached, Kuśa, powerful as he was, pierced his heart with three razor-edged arrows, shining like the moon.
स बाणविद्धस्तरसा कुशेन बलशालिना । शालेन हृदि संजघ्ने दंतान्निष्पिष्य मारुतिः
Struck swiftly by Kuśa, strong in might, Hanuman crushed his teeth and struck Kuśa in the chest with the śāla tree.
शालाहतस्तदा बालः किंचिन्नाकंपत स्मयात् । तदा वीराः प्रशंसां तु प्रचक्रुस्तस्य बाल्यतः
Though struck by the śāla tree, the boy barely moved, smiling; then the heroes praised him for his youthful resilience.
स शालेन हतो वीरः संहारास्त्रं समाददे । संहन्तुं वैरिणं कोपात्कुशः स परमास्त्रवित्
Struck by the śāla tree, the hero Kuśa, skilled in supreme weapons, took up a weapon of destruction in anger to annihilate his enemy.
संहारास्त्रं समालोक्य दुर्जयं कुशमोचितम् । दध्यौ रामं स्वमनसा भक्तविघ्नविनाशकम्
Beholding the formidable weapon of destruction, difficult to overcome and released by Kuśa, he meditated upon Rāma in his mind, the remover of obstacles for devotees.
तदा मुक्तं कुशेनाशु तदस्त्रं हृदि मारुतेः । लग्नं महाव्यथाकारि तेन मूर्च्छामितः पुनः
Then that weapon, swiftly released by Kuśa, struck the heart of the Wind-god’s son, causing great agony, and because of it he again fell unconscious.
मूर्च्छां प्राप्तं तु तं दृष्ट्वा प्लवंगं बलसंयुतः । विव्याध सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैः सैन्यं तत्सकलं महत्
Seeing that mighty monkey fallen unconscious, he attacked the entire great army with sharp arrows.
तस्य बाणायुतैर्भग्नं बलं सर्वं रणांगणे । पलायनपरं जातं चतुरंगसमन्वितम्
By his countless arrows, the whole force was shattered on the battlefield, and the fourfold army turned to flight.
तदा कपिपतिः कोपात्सुग्रीवो रक्षको महान् । अभ्यधावन्नगान्नैकानुत्पाट्य कुशमुद्भटम्
Then the monkey king Sugrīva, the great protector, enraged, rushed forward, uprooting many trees to confront the fierce Kuśa.
कुशः सर्वान्प्रचिच्छेद लीलया प्रहसन्नगान् । पुनरप्यागतान्वृक्षांश्चिच्छेद तरसा बली
Kuśa, laughing playfully, cut down all the trees with ease, and again forcefully cut down the returning trees with his strength.
अनेकबाणव्यथितः सुग्रीवः समरांगणे । जग्राह पर्वतं घोरं कुशमस्तकमध्यतः
Sugrīva, afflicted by many arrows on the battlefield, seized a terrible mountain and hurled it at Kuśa’s head.
कुशस्तं नगमायांतं वीक्ष्य बाणैरनेकधा । निष्पिपेष चकाराशु महारुद्रांगयोग्यताम्
Seeing that mountain coming, Kuśa shattered it instantly with many arrows, making it suitable as an offering to the great Rudra.
सुग्रीवस्तन्महत्कर्म दृष्ट्वा बालेन निर्मितम् । जयाशाप्रतिनिर्वृत्तो बभूव समरांगणे
Sugrīva, witnessing that great feat accomplished by the young Kuśa, lost all hope of victory on the battlefield.
रणमध्ये दुराक्रांतं कुशं लांगूलताडकम् । अत्यमर्षीरुषाक्रांतस्तं हंतुं नगमाददे
In the midst of battle, seeing Kuśa, difficult to approach and striking with his tail, Sugrīva, overcome with wrath and impatience, took up a mountain to slay him.
आत्मानं हंतुमुद्युक्तं वीक्ष्य सुग्रीवमादरात् । ताडयामास बहुभिः सायकैः शितपर्वभिः
Seeing Sugrīva preparing to kill himself, Kuśa respectfully struck him with many sharp-tipped arrows.
स ताडितो बहुविधैः शरैः पीडासमन्वितः । कुशं हंतुं समारब्धो ययौ शालं समाददे
Struck by many kinds of arrows and filled with pain, Sugrīva set out to kill Kuśa and seized a śāla tree.
तदापि च कुशो वीरो वारुणास्त्रं समाददे । बबंध तं च पाशेन दृढेन स लवाग्रजः
Even then, the heroic Kuśa took up the Varuṇa weapon and, with a strong noose, bound him—Sugrīva, the elder of Lava.
स बद्धः पाशकैः स्निग्धैः कुशेन बलशालिना । पपात रणमध्ये वै महावीरैरलंकृते
Bound by the gentle nooses of the mighty Kuśa, he fell in the midst of the battle, surrounded by great heroes.
सुग्रीवं पतितं दृष्ट्वा वीराः सर्वत्र दुद्रुवुः । जयमाप लवभ्राता महावीरशिरोमणिः
Seeing Sugrīva fallen, the heroes everywhere fled; the illustrious Lava’s brother attained victory, the foremost among great warriors.
तावल्लवो भटाञ्जित्वा पुष्कलं चांगदं तथा । प्रतापाग्र्यं वीरमणिं तथान्यानपि भूभुजः
Then Lava, having defeated the warriors, as well as Puṣkala and Aṅgada, the foremost in valor and heroism, and other kings as well—
जयं प्राप्य रणे वीरो लवो भ्रातरमागमत् । संग्रामे जयकर्तारं वैरिकोटिनिपातकम्
Having gained victory in battle, the heroic Lava approached his brother, the conqueror in war and destroyer of countless enemies.
परस्परं प्रहृषितौ परिरंभं प्रकुर्वतः । जयं प्राप्तौ तदा वार्तां मुने चक्रतुरुन्मदौ
The two, delighted with each other, embraced, and having attained victory, joyfully shared the news with the sage.
लव उवाच। भ्रातस्तव प्रसादेन निस्तीर्णो रणतोयधिः । इदानीं वीररणकं शोधयावः सुशोभितम्
Lava said: Brother, by your favor I have crossed the ocean of battle; now let us cleanse the field of valor, splendid as it is.
इत्युक्त्वा त्वरितं वीरो जग्मतुस्तौ कुशीलवौ । राज्ञो मौलिमणिं चित्रं जग्राह कनकाचितम्
Having spoken thus, those heroic twins, Kuśa and Lava, swiftly went and took the king’s jeweled crown, adorned with gold.
पुष्कलस्य लवो वीरो जग्राह मुकुटं शुभम् । अंगदे च महानर्घ्ये शत्रुघ्नस्यापरस्य च
The valiant Lava took Puṣkala’s auspicious crown, and also the priceless armlets of Śatrughna and another.
गृहीत्वा शस्त्रसंघातं हनूमंतं कपीश्वरम् । सुग्रीवं सविधे गत्वा उभावपि बबंधतुः
Having seized the array of weapons, they approached Hanumān, lord of monkeys, and Sugrīva, and bound both of them.
