Then he made a loud sound, shaking the hearts of the warriors. Lava first remembered Valmiki and his mother Janaki.
He released sharp arrows at once, capable of taking life. Kālajit, his bow strung, was filled with anger.
Javana, skilled in battle, struck at Lava. In an instant, Kuśa's younger brother swiftly cut those arrows into a hundred pieces.
With his own excellent arrows, he made the general lose his chariot. Deprived of his chariot, the general mounted an elephant brought by his own soldiers.
The elephant was mad with intoxication, moving with great speed and streaming in seven directions. Seeing him mounted on the elephant, with ten arrows from his bow—
He struck him with arrows, laughing, and conquered all the enemy troops. Seeing Kālajit's valor, his mind was filled with astonishment.
He hurled a great mace, crafted by the renowned. The mace rushed forth with force, forged from ten thousand weights.
Kuśa's younger brother swiftly cut it into three pieces with razor-sharp arrows. He then hurled a deadly, sharp, terrible iron club, famed for taking the lives of enemies.
Again, Lava, full of force, cut it apart. Having split that dreadful club, his eyes reddened with anger.
Mounted on the elephant's back, thinking himself mighty, he grew angry. In that instant, he cut off the elephant's trunk with his sword.
Grasping the elephant's tusks with his feet, he climbed onto its head. He shattered the crown into a hundred pieces and the armor into a thousand.
Pulling the general by his hair, he threw him down to the ground. Fallen from the elephant's back, the general, enraged, rose again.
He struck him in the heart with his fist, a fist like thunder. Hit by the fist, he quickly released sharp arrows with razor points.
He swiftly shot them at his heart, his bow drawn in a circle. He shone at the edge of the battlefield, his bow curved like an earring.
Wearing an impenetrable helmet and armor, though pierced by sharp arrows, he took up his sword to kill.
With rage, baring his teeth and breathing heavily again and again, the heroic commander approached, sword in hand.
That sword cut through the middle of his arm, and the hand holding the sword fell; seeing his severed sword-bearing hand, the commander grew angry.
He then tried to strike him with his left arm using a mace; but that arm too was cut off, adorned with armlets, by sharp arrows.
Then the enraged warrior struck Lava with his feet; though struck by his feet, Lava did not move on the battlefield.
Like an elephant struck by a garland, he cut off his feet; even then, he attempted to strike him with his crown.
Then Lava, considering the commander to possess supreme valor, took up a sword in his hand, blazing like the fire of time.
He cut off his head, adorned with a great crown; when the commander fell, a great cry of 'alas!' arose.
The soldiers, greatly enraged, gathered to kill Lava; but Lava made them flee with the blows of his own arrows.
Some, their limbs cut and broken, departed from the battlefield; he, having restrained all the warriors, joyfully entered the army.
Like a boar breathing heavily in the great ocean at the end of the world, elephants were split in two, and the earth was filled with pearls.
The ground became impassable for the foremost warriors, as if covered with mountains; horses with golden bridles, adorned with beautiful jewels.
Fell into a lake soaked with blood, the army shining splendidly; charioteers, with bows held in the middle of their hands, shone brightly.
Fallen upon the chariot floor, like gods going to heaven; their mouths clenched, faces marked by wandering fortune.
There lay the warriors, skilled in battle; blood flowed in rivers, with heads like turtles.
Beautifully flowing in great streams, causing fear to enemies; some had arms severed, some had feet mutilated.
