Hearing this, Hanuman, the servant of Rama, was immediately bound on the battlefield by the king with the Rama weapon.
Hanuman said to the king, 'What can I do, O lord of the earth? Bound by my master's weapon, I cannot be restrained by any ordinary means.'
Bring the king back to his own city; my master, the ocean of compassion, will come and release him.
When the king was bound by Samīraja, Puṣkala, enraged, went to the king; as Puṣkala approached, he struck him with arrows rich in wealth.
With countless thousands of arrows, the mighty Puṣkala slew the king; many of the king's arrows were broken in the main battlefield.
Thus, as Suratha and Puṣkala fought fiercely in battle, the entire world, both stationary and moving, was filled with arrows.
Seeing their zeal for battle, the divine soldiers were bewildered; what can be said of humans, who were terrified in an instant.
With the exchange of weapons and counter-weapons, praised by great mantras, the tumultuous battle of heroes became hair-raising.
Then, the enraged king took up a nārāca arrow; but it was cut down by the furious blows of Vatsadanta and the Bhāratas.
When that arrow was cut, the king, in anger, took up another; as he was about to cut the arrow, he was struck in the heart and wounded.
Puṣkala, of great brilliance, fell unconscious—a marvelous event—having fought a tremendous battle with the wise king.
When Puṣkala fell, King Śatrughna, the tormentor of foes, became enraged and went toward Suratha, standing on his chariot.
The mighty brother of Rāma spoke to King Suratha: 'You have performed a great deed by binding the son of the wind.'
Puṣkala, too, a great hero, and others of my army, powerful and valiant, have been struck down in the fierce main battle.
Now, stand firm; after you have struck down my heroes on the battlefield, where will you go, O lord of the earth? Endure my arrows.
Hearing thus the words of the hero, the powerful Suratha, holding the beautiful lotus feet of Rāma in his mind, spoke.
I have struck down your heroes in battle, those facing the son of the wind; now I will strike you down as well in the main arena.
Remember Rāma, the hero who comes and protects his own; otherwise, there is no life for you before me, O tormentor of foes.
Having spoken thus, the king struck Śatrughna with thousands of arrows, enclosing him in a cage of arrow clusters.
Śatrughna, seeing the clusters of arrows released like fire deities, released a weapon to burn the curved arrows.
Seeing that weapon released, King Suratha, mighty in strength, subdued it with the Varuna weapon and struck with a multitude of arrows.
Then he placed upon his bow the weapon given by the yogini, wondrous and capable of inducing sleep in all warriors.
Beholding that great bewildering weapon, the king, remembering Hari, spoke to Shatrughna, the master of all weapons and missiles.
Though I am bewildered, by remembering the glorious Rama, no other enchantment appears to me, nor does fear or distress arise.
When the hero had spoken thus, he released the mighty missile; by that arrow, something was cut down and fell upon the battlefield.
Seeing that great bewildering weapon rendered ineffective, the king, filled with extreme amazement, placed an arrow upon his bow.
He fitted to his bow the arrow by which Lavana, the crusher of great demons, was slain—terrible, shining with the brilliance of fire.
Seeing it, the king said: 'This arrow pierces the hearts of the wicked; yet before a devotee of Rama, it does not manifest its power.'
As he was thus speaking, the destroyer of enemies swiftly struck his heart with that arrow, blazing like a fire's flame.
Afflicted by that arrow, overwhelmed with great pain, he fell unconscious for a moment upon his chariot, scorched by suffering.
